[National Park]

Easy now, there's plenty for everyone, I promise.

[Seated in the middle of a grassy knoll, Newt has his bag set beside him and open revealing all the Pokepuffs inside. Several Hoppips are hovering about around him chirping in delight while some Pidgeys, a pair of Bunearys and a Wimpod are settled close to him, all happily munching on their treats.

Newt's partner, an Audino that he's taken to calling Artemis, is helping him hand out treats, the pink creature holding up a Pokepuff for one of the Hoppips to eat.]

Aren't you all just fascinating? [Newt gently pet the Wimpod that initially started to back away before it let out a soft noise and went back to eating.] I wonder how you all came to be. I've seen some rather fascinating creatures in my travels but you are all something else entirely.

[Artemis churred softly in agreement, moving over to sit beside Newt in a please manner. Said human chuckled softly and gave her a 'puff of her own since she'd given all the others away.]

But you're all quite wonderful, even if I don't entirely understand yet.

[Network]

Um, yes, sorry, I hate to be a bother but I have a question if there's anyone willing to help me out.

[Newt is smiling awkwardly at the camera, his jacket resting over a chair and his sleeves pushed up. His hotel room is swarming with Pokemon--which must have gotten in through the open window because they definitely aren't his outside of Artemis--and some are napping while others play about.

Does he seemed bothered? Nope. So that can't be what he's got a question about.

He reaches for the 'gear and turns it to show one Pokemon in particular, a small Mimikyu that's just barely visible from behind the shelf it's hiding behind.]

Can anyone tell me anything about caring for these little ones? I read the index about it but I can't hep but wonder if there's a lot of information missing about them.

Well, what sort of information are you looking for, exactly?

*training? breeding? the best kind of brushes to use for a silky coat? Sion can think of any number of things that question could mean....*

[Cue a bit of a confused look from Newt before he's babbling again.]

Information about these creatures in general. Where they come from, why they hide like they do, ways to befriend them--things of that nature. Anything that could help me make friends with this little one.

Re: Video (he's gonna just LOVE this place, wont he?)

Well, according to the local myths, they were either created long ago by a very powerful pokemon called Arceus, or descended from one called Mew. Or both.

*... Sion don't be a troll*

Whatever their origins though, they're creatures native to this world and found all throughout it. Hundreds of species have been identified, inhabiting places from the seas to the mountains, forests to cities, and volcanos to frozen caverns.

As for hiding, probably in part for the same reasons any wild creature does. Pokemon are generally more intelligent than the animals found in most worlds, but they have similar behaviors and instincts in many cases. They also often like to battle each other, so I imagine some deliberately lie in wait to challenge strong-looking opponents.

*he's sure that raises more questions, but one thing at a time*

There isn't just any one way to befriend them, however. Capturing them as a trainer is the most common start, of course, and many pokemon respect a partner who they can rely on to train them and direct them well in battle. Beyond that it's often a matter of individual temperament. Some may be shy and require a gentle approach; others bold and strong-willed who respect a strong hand to challenge and lead them. Different species often have certain traits they're commonly known for, but those aren't necessarily universally the case.

*and now to wait for the inevitable follow-up questions*

Those are what people call Legendaries, yes? I've read a bit about them.

[And by read a bit he means he spent a few hours in a library recently.]

Yes, yes, I read that as well.

That's not quite what I meant by hiding. Mimikyu here seems to hide behind that disguise and I'm curious to know why. It's a shame for any creature to have to hide and if the information I got from the Pokedex is any indication, it seems to use a disguise because others find it hideous. It's a shame, if you ask me, that any creature should have to feel that way.

[He genuinely feels bad for the little thing.]

So what you are suggesting is that I need to figure out what works best for this particular little creature.

Re: Video (So many wonderful creatures to meet and learn about!)

[personal profile] dreamsofahero 2017-05-03 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

*only a few hours? Psh, that's nothing...*

Ah, so you mean in specific cases? That's hard to say. It's possible the accounts in the pokedex are more or less accurate, but then again, they could be merely exaggerations or rumor. For example, cubone is said to wear the skull of its deceased mother, however, all cubone hatch with said skulls, which suggests it may be an inherent part of them.

[Oh he had wanted to stay longer but Artemis hadn't allowed it.]

So most of what's held in the index is probably just tales of sorts that have been passed down to explain the oddities with the Pokemon.

[How interesting. It makes him wonder if there's a proper guide in the works or if everyone simply relies on the Pokedex.]

I suppose that means I just have to see what I can figure out myself.

It's a possibility. Some of the information there has proven to be quite true, however, and in other cases it was at least accurate in certain circumstances...

*really, the moral here is just take everything with a grain of salt*

Certain circumstances? Such as?

Well, some of the information on a pokemon called shedinja suggests that looking at its back can cause the soul of the person see it to be stolen. Normally, this is obviously not the case, but several years ago apparently there were a number of them loose which somehow did have the ability to temporarily steal a person's soul, presumably as a result of an experiment of some sort.
