[Claude has to laugh, amused and maybe a little flattered at Jaskier's righteous indignation for him. Really, how many people get offended on his behalf for...well, anything?

Granted, this is partially because he hides a lot of things that could lead to his being bothered, and then very convincingly laughs off the other half, so that even his closest friends feel like he's somehow always good and has everything handled to his satisfaction, but...nonetheless. It's a nice feeling to have someone morally outraged for him by proxy. It's a form of affection he doesn't experience much.]

Oh, no, trust me, I'd never agree to such a lopsided deal clearly to my own disadvantage as that. No, all the responsibilities of my being duke of the Leicester Alliance are very definitely over - the benefits and drawbacks were given up as a package deal. [He smiles.] Those just weren't my only shackles, that's all. And the ones I have left aren't ones I can so easily shake off...although if I'm honest, I wouldn't really want to even if I could. Not yet. Everyone's got a dream, and for the sake of mine...well, there's a lot I'd be willing to pay. Even in personal freedom, if I have to, and I can tell you appreciate that's rare coin not to be traded lightly.

[Vague, but with an air of romantic mystery. He's sure a bard like Jaskier will appreciate that. And it's even true! Claude doesn't mind being honest about himself when he doesn't actually have to compromise any revealing details.]

Knights that cast spells really isn't an inaccurate way to refer to them! [Claude laughs.] Some of them are literally that, actually. Some are a bit more...frail, I'd say, than the image a knight conveys. But no - in my world, magic isn't so rare as it seems to be in yours, and the people who use it don't have to be any more sinister or dangerous than anyone who wields a more standard weapon. I mean, obviously you've got mages who are incredibly sinister and dangerous, but...well, that's the extreme fringe.

[And then...Jaskier defends his honor (or is it Claude's, in this case?) with poetry. And that's new. Even as a man who grew up a prince in a king's court, Claude's never had someone compose poetry for him. Not at all a surprise, considering it was an Almyran court, but the point stands. He's genuinely flattered; he'd go so far as to say charmed. Even setting aside the novelty of the poem, this is more effort than anyone's ever put into flirting with him.

He could almost blush.

He winks at Jaskier, eyes alive with interest.]
Well, with a silver tongue like that, I guess I do have to retract any doubts I had as to how dangerous a wordsmith you are. And whether I'm being given my due credit~. It's not every day a man gets personalized poetry...

[Jaskier's little creature flees from their argument into the safety of its enclosure. The bird on Geralt's shoulder takes wing as well, to the safety of the tree branches a short way off. It hops along the length of it, forward and back, like it's too nervous too keep still.]

[Good. These creatures don't need to get caught in the middle of their spat. They weren't involved.]

I know what I fucking said, Jaskier! [Shit-shoveler and burden and the harbinger of all of his troubles. And the bard is many things, not all of them good, but he was not responsible for all of Geralt's problems.] I know that it was fucking cruel.

[Cruel and unfair and left Jaskier thinking that he resented him for the past twenty years. Geralt, it seems, has an issue with careless words-- the reward at the betrothal, the djinn, the mountain. If he still didn't think that destiny's horseshit, he would think that he's destined to be undone by his own words.]

You weren't a maid or whatever the fuck it is you're thinking. I walked the Path for six fucking decades before you and never brought anyone along. Just you. [Not his brothers, not Yen, though she would never have deigned to travel with him, anyway. Just Jaskier, just this one noisy bard.] You always knew when I didn't mean the shit I said. You always knew me. And you always came back.

[Better than anyone else, Jaskier knew him. Better than he knew himself, probably, considering how witchers dealt with the very concept of having emotions. And now his hands are clenched so tightly at his sides that his nails are biting into his palms, probably leaving little half-moon marks in the skin. A bard and a sorceress are the two people who can make the echoes of emotion that he has left flare up, usually for the worse.]

[Jaskier didn't come back after the mountain. Geralt hadn't even been halfway down the damned thing before he regret what he'd said, but there was no bard waiting for him at the bottom of it. He regret it when there was no bard standing next to Roach. He regret it when he started walking the Path again, alone.]

I didn't fucking mean it, Jaskier. I was miserable and angry and I wanted to be left alone, but not for good.

[He was wrong to do it that way, to get Jaskier to leave him to his misery by saying cruel things to him, but he hadn't wanted to deal with what the bard might say, either. Not the gentle things-- undeserved-- nor the I-told-you-so's-- deserved.]

Jules's entire existence is a little embarrassing, really. He's nothing if not consistent that way.

Before Jules can start screaming again, he takes that gut punch and doubles over with a whimper.

"Scraft!" Hey! You can't punch Rust's Trainer like that! He's too inept with that! She charges in, intending to put herself in between Beau and Jules.

[That she is aware of. But she also has a kitten who breathes fire. And in fact, that's a sneeze from the Litleo with a small burst of flame to show said fact before it rubs its nose with a paw.]

Like your old sword, I take it.

[That fiery sneeze from the adorable cat has him both in shock from the burst of fire, and even more endeared by the cute creature. He seems childish to react in such a way, but small creatures have always held a soft spot in his heart. Always brought out the sweeter side of him.]

Of course! How could I not? Hey, let me ask you something. [His tone shifts suddenly, curiosity striking.] Have you been able to use your spiritual powers, or are they mysteriously missing too?

He knows all too well her skill with those needles. She doesn't even need to say what that backup is for it to strike fear in him.]

D-d-don't you even THINK about doing that to me again Wen Qing!

Make sure to not hurt yourself and keep it from me, Wei Wuxian. As it is, you're lucky I don't have any needles.

[Litleo just tilts her head at the Cultivator trying to hide behind the sword pokemon. The tilt itself likely showing the vague sense of judgement that was there.]

[personal profile] rollstoseduce 2020-12-15 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Jaskier can be quite quick to get offended on other people's behalf - just ask Geralt. Just say the word and the asshole will get a song destroying their reputation.

But he does calm down when Claude explains, even sighing with relief. The mention of an alliance, though, does make him raises his eyebrows - that sounds a lot more than inheriting the family's estate.]

Duke of an alliance, huh? That's more political than I was expecting. How much are you hiding on your sleeves, I wonder, o' new friend of mine? [Only teasing! (Well, kinda. He half means it too.) But his expression softens then - Claude is right, Jaskier appreciates an air of romantic mystery. But mostly, he sympathizes with what he's hearing pretty damn hard. Leaving your shackles behind, pursuing a dream no matter the prize... it's like Claude is telling Jaskier's own story.] Giving up is the sign of the weak heartened soul. That rare coin, as you call it, that is personal freedom - the prize may be high, but trust me: it's worth it. Never stop shaking off those shackles, Claude. I understand there's something in your world that you need to achieve first, and yet... here you are.

[Away from it all. Responsibility and shackles can kindly fuck off and burn in hell!]

A fragile mage - now that's a concept I never thought I'd hear. Mayhap it's a side effect of magic being more common and therefore easily available in your world. Does your kind of mage make for less epic tales as well, I wonder?

[The wink is cute, but it's that spark in green eyes that tell Jaskier how well he's done. By now his smile is so wide it could almost split his face, and he even allows himself to look a bit smug - scratch that, more like very smug. And since Claude is falling for his wordsmithing, why stop now?]

Not every day? I refuse to believe a man of your charms and pulchritude has never been properly wooed. Not even a confession letter with the scent of a maiden's perfume?
vrdantwind: (I'll show you this side of the world)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2020-12-15 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't mind telling you a bit more about that, since it's about as relevant to now as my having been a duke. [He winks.] I mentioned I was part of an alliance of nobles running a country, right? The Leicester Alliance was the name of that country. And as the highest-ranking noble...well, I was technically in charge, although obviously the whole point of a council of nobles is that I didn't have absolute power. We had to come to consensus agreements. A huge headache, let me tell you. If you think dealing with nobles is a pain, just imagine trying to actively herd them into not being completely short-sightedly self-serving in matters of state. I won't miss that, let me tell you.

Anyway, though, I'm no longer a duke, and the Alliance...well, it's undergone some radical restructuring. For the better in the long run, I hope. So any power I had in all of that is, like I said, no longer relevant even back home, much less here. I've got no reason to hide any of that.

[He chuckles quietly, nodding.] And yet, here I am. [He leans his chin on his hand, with a softer smile than his usual.] I don't know when or if I can shake off my current shackles, although my dream means enough to me that I'd be content to wear them forever if it meant I could achieve the things I hope for in other areas. But here...I've got all the freedom I want. A few other things I never thought I'd see unless I forcibly made them happen, too.

[His dream is very personal to him, but ironically he's never minded sharing his dearest wish with anyone despite how close to his heart it is. He's got nothing to be ashamed of in it.

But the continued flattery gets a laugh out of him.]
Ah, I'm touched by your appreciation! But the truth of the matter is, I actually grew up in a place where I wasn't at all popular. My looks and charm honestly never got me very far there.

[personal profile] rollstoseduce 2020-12-16 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
[It's not any day that Geralt talks for more than two seconds. And it's even rarer for him to reply to Jaskier's fucking concerns by actually listening and showing understanding.

Jaskier doesn't know what to do with it.

It feels big. Important. But the reason why it feels that way it's because he knows Geralt and understands why this is different in the first place. And isn't that fucked up? Isn't he supposed to have learned he actually doesn't know Geralt? There's no arguing against fucking Geralt of Rivia admitting he was wrong, half of Jaskier thinks. You can't be a fool to fall for it again, the other half retorts.

Just you, Geralt says. And Jaskier knows he's done for.

His hands are shaking when he raises them to drag them down his face as he lets out a heartfelt-]

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

[His heart is beating so fast, Jaskier thinks it's about to tear his chest open, jump out and lay at Geralt's feet so it can continue to be messed with. Oh Destiny, you devious mistress, is this part of your daily amusement too? Jaskier feels played with, which makes no sense, because Geralt is many things, but never a player. He doesn't dance around a subject unless he knows he wants to try and be sensitive when delivering bad news (especially to kids) or-- well, when he has to admit he is wrong.

Which he just did. Kinda.

And fuck if that doesn't have an effect on Jaskier. Once again, he's analyzing Geralt as if he truly knew him and-- fuck. He just went over this. Ugh.]

You bloody bastard. [He finally replies as he throws his hands in the air, but at least he isn't yelling anymore. He sounds frustrated instead - frustrated at Geralt, at Destiny, at their current situation, at his own emotions for being little assholes and fighting against each other, because Anger doesn't want to give in but Touched-by-Geralt's-Words sure is trying its damn best to make a fool out of him again. He never tried to stop himself from being a fool before, he's always thought it was worth it for the experience - live your life at its fullest. So why now? Ah yes, because that's the effect Geralt has on him. Never has it hurt so much, not even with the Countess.] Do you have any idea how I've always craved to hear you say things like that to me? "Just you", you say? That belongs in a bloody poem! How is this fair? How is this fucking fair!

[He sighs, feeling so tired - because of the trek down the mountain, yes, but also emotionally. There's so much stuck in his throat, so much that wants to come out and no matter how much he wants to scream and finally let it all out, he can't. He just can't. Because there are certain things that must stay buried, even if they were still on better terms.

He takes a deep breath as he hugs himself and looks down at his feet, not wanting to have those golden eyes pressuring him in confessing more than he should. For such a peacock, he sure sounds and looks small right now.]

It scares me, Geralt. It scares me to know I had a reason to believe you. It scares me to hear you thought you could throw whatever the hell you want at me because I'd always be back. Is that how you see me? Do you think I have no limits or that it doesn't bother me? I stayed because like you said, I knew you - or at least, I thought I did. But that didn't mean it didn't fucking hurt, you stupid arse! It wasn't an open invitation for you to throw more!

[Jaskier can't help staring at Claude as if he had grown a second head, even raising his hands in an exasperated gesture as he mumbles what?. An "alliance of nobles" sounds like a fucking nightmare, Jaskier thinks, and Claude quickly confirms it.] I think I'm getting a headache merely from hearing about it. Nobles working together? I never thought I'd see the day. Reaching consesus agreements? [He shivers in an exaggerated way so it's visible on camera.] I'd say you have my sympathies, but it feels more like I should be offering you my condolences.

[His expression softens when Claude mentions accepting the shackles if that means fulfilling his dreams. A means to an end, or like he told Geralt-] Respect doesn't make history. I understand your need for shackles back in your world, but total freedom is, indeed, what we've acquired here. So let's keep those shackles behind, mmmh? There are no nobles expecting you to lead them here, the same way there are no cuckold husbands asking for my head either. [His turn to wink! Then he tilts his head, curiosity written all over his face.] May I ask what those other few things are?

[Not popular even if he had the looks and the charm? After what they discussed about noble life? Jaskier is having trouble to believe such a thing - both his eyebrows are quickly raised.]

You had the looks, the charm and the political power, yet you were unpopular? Dear Claude, I'll have to start thinking you are one of those travelers with monstrous attributes that were lost in their arrival to this world.
vrdantwind: (If I'm right here with you)

[personal profile] vrdantwind 2020-12-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Condolences are exactly right. [Claude laughs.] Ugh, if I never see Count Gloucester again, it'll be too soon. I had to attend the officer's academy with his son when I was younger, too! There was just no escape at all for me, really~.

As for what those other things are... [Claude smiles slightly, and it's one of his warmer ones.] A place where borders and cultural differences don't lead to fear and hate between people. Somewhere that people from all walks of life can exist in relative harmony, and it's not our differences that determine how we're treated, but our actions. That's actually my dream.

See, the reason I wasn't popular...well, let's just say my mother eloped with my father from her home country. That wasn't a problem where I'm from, actually; the place I was born doesn't care much about formality or propriety or the circumstances of your birth. But my mother's country and my father's...there's a lot of contention between them. So I wasn't popular because I'm considered a contemptible outsider, due to the kind of blood I was born with. Nothing more or less than that. So you can see why eliminating that sort of attitude through cultural mingling and mutual understanding would be something I value. And this place has so much variation between people that I imagine it's almost impossible to develop such prejudices, ironically enough.

[None of this, fortunately, is too revealing. Even if Jaskier told any of Claude's friends from Fodlan what he'd said, what could they possibly make of that? Fodlan's not popular with any of its neighbors. It doesn't narrow things down at all.]

[Jaskier knows it all about annoying as fuck counts. Because of all the ones he's met in court through the years, but most importantly, because his father was one. And just like Claude said... if he never sees him again, it'll be too soon.

He wants to laugh along, make some joke about his own awful anecdotes with old geezers with titles, but Claude's expression suddenly changes and... Ah. This is a serious topic. A topic he's familiar with, in fact, although he hasn't suffered it as much as Geralt or Claude himself.

Jaskier, for once, shuts up and pays attention. It's an important story, one he's frankly surprised he's getting from someone he just met. Then again, if that's Claude's dream, it makes sense for him to try to spread the message.

His face stays serious during the whole story, the only gesture being petting Dahlia's soft body. And it stays serious when he replies.]

Everything you've described... it is, unfortunately, the situation in my world as well. Dwarves and elves, even half-elves, they're judged for their blood too. The monster hunter I mentioned from my songs? Treated like crap for being able to fight monsters, call him inhuman, yet they hire him to do the job. Like prostitutes, if you will: a service they consume yet they look down upon. [He's leaving out the little detail of Geralt being mutated, and he knows he shouldn't - it makes it look like he's hiding it on purpose, when the entire point is that nobody should be ashamed of such a thing. But he isn't sure if Geralt would want people in this world to know when he has a chance to start over, so he leaves that decision for his friend to make.] They direct their ire at me too, sometimes, for daring to befriend him and sing his praises. For treating him like a person and not a monster. [All the playfulness from before is gone from Jaskier's voice, now replaced by contempt.] And let's not get started on their judgment over my bedmate choices. Bigotry is the disease of ignorance.

[He shakes his head with a sigh, then looks at Claude with softer eyes. This isn't the right moment to start a rant about witcher hate.]

I'm sorry you've gone through all that, Claude. Your dream sounds perfect, to say the least. If I was a bard at your court I promise you I would be delighted to spread your message through song.

[It's been a few days since Zelda has come into the world. She's still not sure what has happened to her ears, or why this strange little Ralts was wandering with her after escaping from a ball. She understood that it was a Pokemon. That she should catch more and train them up. It was still strange.

Every new Pokemon was met with curiosity as she tries to use the Pokedex as more of a Sheika Slate than it's actual purpose.]

How do I take a picture with this?

[The video opens up to a pair of green eyes staring intently into the camera.]

How does this work? Oh! I believe it is doing something.

[The camera is panned out to show the face of a young woman who is brimming with a curious energy and a smile to match.]

I do not know what a "video" is, yet it seems to be a moving picture of some sort. [She waves at the screen.] Hello. If there is anyone who can view this, I would appreciate some assistance. [That's not fair, Jaskier had said when Geralt had told him that life's great blessing would be to take him off of his hands. Geralt is, apparently, a very unfair man-- in both his accusations and in this half-apology. He can only hope that the bard will forgive him for it, for trespasses both past and present. But Jaskier has always been good at forgiveness, hasn't he? He'd forgiven Geralt for any number of insults and casual cruelties over the past two decades, without the witcher even having to say a word of apology.]

[Jaskier makes himself look small, arms wrapped around himself and eyes on the ground. It's contrary to everything the bard usually is-- the sheer force of his personality always takes up more space than his physical body ever could. No amount of hecklers or angry fathers could diminish him.]

I know.

[He had wounded him without ever even reaching for a sword. And he has learned that he should not have taken Jaskier's presence for granted, that he shouldn't have assumed that he would know that he didn't mean if life could give me one blessing either. It was a hard lesson to learn, one that he took over the months of lonely travel, when there was that aching, restless thing in his chest that usually only reared its head in the last few weeks of winter. He had always thought it just wanderlust, a need to get back out onto the Path.]

You were never the reason for my problems, Jaskier. [Geralt is perfectly capable of being the reason for his own problems, and frequently is. No bard necessary.] It was never a blessing to have you gone.

𝓐. Goldenrod;

[It's just another ordinary December day in Goldenrod. Snowy and chilly, as is to be expected. Maybe you're out doing some holiday shopping. Maybe on the way to work. Perhaps just going out to meet up with an acquaintance. Whatever brings you out on this brisk day, it likely didn't account for a poor little Salandit in the middle of the sidewalk that seems to have been left out in the cold.

The poor thing is shivering, its little hands rubbing at its arms as if the friction would heat it up, its squinty, yet large, eyes landing on you as if to plea for succor. For those a little more keenly aware of the fact that reptiles don't shiver to get warm like mammals do, this might seem a little odd. But hey, Pokémon are a little strange, aren't they?

To those less worried about the details and more concerned about the fate of the creature, it really does seem like a poor creature begging for some help! As you draw nearer, its little claws grasp in your direction, as if wanting to be picked up? Maybe so it can huddle to your body for warmth? It is small enough that you could probably just put it in your coat even!

However, should you do just that, you will quickly feel those graspy claws grasping indeed! Quickly and deftly trying to grab for anything of value: money, wallet, Pokéballs! Anything at all, and the moment his little grubby hands finds something, he will springboard off of your chest and bolt.

Should you follow him, he will return to a certain young man some few blocks away, dressed in a long coat that isn't exactly as thick of a coat as one should probably be wearing for the weather. However, that doesn't stand out near as much as the rest of him. His meticulously styled coif, jade eyeshadow, and painted black lips make his already elegant features all the more prominent. He's tapping away on his Pokégear as the little thief holds the goods up to him, and with only a simple flick of his gaze does he acknowledge the bounty, before letting it shift to his Pokémon's pursuer.

His eyebrow quirks. As he speaks, his tone is controlled but bored sounding. As if your existence is somehow a bigger inconvenience than the robbery you just played victim to.]

I'm sorry. Can I help you?

[As if the problem wasn't entirely obvious. The Salandit hisses at you. This looks promising.]

𝓑. Goldenrod Rocket Base;

[Honestly, it isn't much of an improvement to the Brooding Caverns, but almost anything is. Sure, he's gotta steal some weird little creatures and turn them in or something? But otherwise...well, he can do whatever the hell he wants, and he's all about that. Besides that, he can use them to fund his housing and some other things?

What absolute idiots, but hey, he's not complaining. At least, not about that. He's got other things to complain about, like the fact he's not a troll anymore. Instead he's this...weird hornless alien species. At least he can't complain too much about the skin tone he's been given, it doesn't throw off his color palette or anything. Had he been given that peachier colored skin he's seen some few of the others have, well, then he'd have some problems.

For now, he's taking a break from the training. Annoying and pointless though it is he's aware when something's unavoidable. Maybe it's fortunate he's used to communal living, what with the jade cloister and all, but that doesn't mean he cares to interact with those he knows are beneath him. This seems to exude off of him, and his presence holds a level of aloof frigidness that certainly works to repel those of fragile and fleeting confidence.

However, should you find yourself brave enough to approach the new recruit, you'll be pointedly ignored as he seems more interested in anything other than you. Perhaps he's just shy, or maybe he's just that much of a cold bitch! Guess there's only one way to find out.]

[Oh hello! It's one thing to be talking to a supposed faceless mass, it's another to be face to face with a girl around his own age. Neville swallows, his mouth going a bit more dry than average.]

And you actually got to meet it? So they are real!

Shaymin is! I'm not sure about the one in your book, but I don't see why not.

I don't actually know a lot about legendary pokemon, though. Where's that one supposed to be from?

Good question...

[Neville brings the book closer to him so he can squint down at the page.]

Hmm, it says Joe...Joh-toh? I dunno- wait, wait. That's the name of the place we woke up, right? So it must live around here then?!
