Hey, I never said you should give him orders! More like, y'know, use your influence with him and your own levelheadedness and common sense to keep him from making bad or dangerous decisions. Giving him a nudge in the right direction. You could even think of it as you offering him resources he doesn't have that you do, so that things go better for him. Because, uh, levelheadedness is definitely a thing he's lacking right now! But you always seem to have plenty.
