They don't actually have an issue with being a dark elf, just the dominant culture of dark elves in Faerun and the idea that even in rebellion, they still are affected by stereotypes about them. Humans didn't have to deal with this shit, even in planes where non-humans existed.

Plus, they like their natural hair color.
