I can't speak to research jobs, but there are plenty of other jobs available. Most commonly are working as temporary staff at the shops or Pokémon centers, but depending on the town, you can often find work at other places, as well.

As for ghost types, there are quite a few that can be found around Ecruteak City, as well as a gym that specializes in them.
