Eda Clawthorne | the owl house | OTA

(Spoiler Warning: Just to cover my bases with a heads up, Eda is being played from between the 18th and 19th episodes of season 2.)

Route 30

[It's late at night, but Eda's still making her way to Violet City and its gym. It's not that the gym challenge is all that exciting to her, but she's hoping it'll help her feel less antsy about not being home to see how things play out. Plus, if she goes all the way with the league... Well, being (one of) the most powerful trainers in the region has a nice ring to it.

But as she heads down the trail, Eda stumbles and nearly trips over something that then rears up with a shrill hoot. And, well, Eda can't bring herself to be mad at the owl-like Pokemon that tripped her up. Especially because it seems to have an injured wing.]

Hey! Easy, easy... Come here, Mama Eda's g-- [With another high-pitched cry, the Hoothoot flies away, leaving Eda to get out a Pokeball and chase after it. With a hurt wing, it's not moving too quickly, but Eda could still use some help.]

Hey, stop that bird! Ah, carefully!

Network (voice)

Ugh. Alright, I'll admit it. I need advice. [Eda's voice is croaky and sounds so tired as the audio feed starts. If only this was the result of overindulging in apple blood, but no, it's not. This is just proof that she cannot escape being a mother.] Luzifer kept me up with her screeching all night, and this morning when she finally stopped, someone on the hotel staff came by to tell me Queenie was eating all the fruit in the lobby!

[A scoff.]

I asked him what he else excepted, leaving a bunch of fruit bowls in a hotel for people with pet demons, but then-- Well, long story short, I need to go back to camping tonight. Which wouldn't be a big deal if I'd gotten any sleep the night before!

Luzifer's a Hoothoot who's scared of her own shadow, and Queenie's a Noibat who won't stop eating, and can't seem to help making everyone around her dizzy. They're good kids, but they are a handful... And not even the kind I'm used to! So how do you guys handle this sort of behavior? Neither of them like to stay in their Pokeballs at night, so that's not happening.

Have you tried making sure your accommodations were more to their liking? At least keeping food with you in the room?

Other than investing in ear plugs, it's all I can really think of.

[ A painfully deep voice in the most Bela Lugosi Dracula-esque accent you've ever heard speaks up on the network. I don't care if translation microbes are a thing, the accent is also a thing.

Their tone is just a bit incensed, disgusted with the state of the world, and then they noticed there's a small slime dragon near them and that seems to be the ray of light in this isekai abyss. ]

Does anyone know what other insanity awaits me as long as I'm stuck here? I don't mean the wildlife - that can stay, but if anyone else tries to claim they're my mother I think I'm going to scream.

Also, if anyone wants to enlighten me as to how any of this happened, I'm more than receptive. I'm expecting some sort of Mage fuckery, but I'd love to be wrong.

Either way, I will get my revenge.

Cherrygrove, at a grocery store or something

[ A beautiful, androgynous figure in a raincoat and dress peers over the various fruits and veggies up for sale, looking at the berries with some measure of curiousity.

And then they have a devious little smile as they just start...throwing the berries into their cart, playing a weird, twisted sort of basketball with those little bastards.

This goes on for a while before the Goomy eats one, then looks at their trainer with a blank, innocent set of eyes, daring them to do something about it. ]

What is wrong with you?

[mamalike]

Pal, it's a hotel. There's not much I can do to personalize the experience. [A soft sigh.] Oh, but you might have a point about the earplugs, for Luzifer. I just... Hm.

[She worries! She doesn't want to miss some actual trouble. She can't be protecting her kid-kids right now, but this is a situation she can control.]

Anyway, I've been carrying around apples for Queenie. She eats them. I guess she just thought the berries in the lobby bowls looked better.

[Eda looks down at the Budew with a snort of a laugh, looking almost fond.]

Well, dang, I wouldn't have guessed it was your call, Carmen. Good for you, ya little bud. [She looks back up to Isabela.] Plant fan? Not my thing, but I know someone who's made that kinda thing work well for her, in a way. So, are you a gardener?

Ach, that's rough. I believe you can find those same berries here, but...hmm.

[ They're pondering stuff. ]

[mamalike]

Yeah? I mean, there's nothing to stop me from picking berries instead of apples, but is there more I should know?

Well, let's see... People here use that wildlife to battle each other, in matches that are surprisingly nonlethal, all things considered. There's ledges scattered throughout various routes that you can easily jump down, but are utterly impossible to climb up. Every few years ago a new region of the world and, with it, new such wildlife becomes known... and is treated as if it had existed all along. It's impossible to keep a sharp edge on anything, even a kitchen knife used strictly for cooking, for long. Magic from other worlds doesn't work here, and the locals will claim there's no such thing, even though there's little other explanation for the sheer power and other oddities the local wildlife possess.

Oh, and approximately twice a year things manage to become even stranger for a few days, if you can believe that.

You know, in the human zoos, they give the animals little activities to keep them occupied. My ghoul, she says this is called "enrichment".

Might be something to think about, no?

[Okay, Eda has some questions she's going to have to (happily) circle back to here. But first:] Ya know, I hadn't even thought that she might be eating out of boredom, but hey. It's worth a shot.

Unfortunately, this place took offense to that.

Furthermore, I don't find anything else too surprising. If the small creatures are to do battle with each other, then monomachy it is.

Well, I should certainly hope neither you nor anyone else is stuck here that long...

And of course, you have to train them in order for them to become stronger at said battles. Collectively, they're known as Pokémon, though there are some hundreds of different kinds.

I hear ya on that one. My magic's more gone than ever, too. And, really, what's that about? Why can the little beastly guys get away with it, but not someone from another place?

They gave me another body entirely, and while I guess it could be worse, ugh...

I worked so hard on my real one, too.

[ Look they're not entirely ignorant to pop culture, also their ghoul has some Pokemon stuff on her. ]

Huh. Well, when you say you worked so hard on it, are we talking about a health and fitness routine, or is this some kind of body augmentation situation?

Okay, I can't say the second half of that isn't pretty unorthodox... But yeah. I'd be furious, at that point.
