Does Jean really want to be the caboose of the poop train

Jean is Krieg's buddy - their friendship was sealed after their first battle and it became apparent that Jean liked explosions at least as much as Krieg did. It's awesome to have a friend nearby who shares a lot of his interests - fire, explosions, monster wrestling (even if he doesn't want to participate in that last one). If Salvador or Axton (or, God willing, the pair of them) ever shows up, Jean is going to get such a good education. Armin would disagree, but Armin is clearly allergic to fun.

It's true, Armin IS allergic to fun. He doesn't understand the simple joys of life.

Jean just flat out really likes Krieg. He's the first friend Jean made in Pokemon land, which is significant for a couple of reasons: first of all, it showed him that this world can be a cool place where people aren't dangerous (an irony, considering it's Krieg we're talking about here), and it also showed him that he was capable of making friends that weren't Marco, his best friend from home. Jean has forged closer relationships with other people (Armin and Bertolt), but they knew him from home and are probably obligated to like him or something. Krieg is a friend he made all on his own, and that means a lot to Jean. The mere fact that Krieg seems to genuinely like him and want to hang out with him is something very important to Jean, and he treasures it.

EEYYY

I'd say that gif is a pretty accurate depiction of Jean and Ash's relationship. Riotous, full of life, sometimes full of fail, but mostly just fun and games all around. Jean likes Ash quite a bit; even though he can be really confusing sometimes with all this talk of magic and technology and stuff, he's never condescending when Jean doesn't get it and patiently explains everything, which Jean appreciates. The fragile teenage ego can't take being condescended to! Ash also teaches him cool stuff like s'mores and new music, which is always fun.

And he took that asshole shark off Jean's hands, which is basically the best thing ever.

Jean still isn't sure what to make of Walter. He seems harmless enough, but then he says some really weird stuff sometimes that Jean can't parse out. Jean has no idea what to make of this talk of gods and sacrifices and such, so he mostly just ignores it. He thinks about it, though, when they're not together, since the afterlife and ghosts are something he's interested in.

For whatever it's worth, Walter is really good to his Pokemon and they seem super happy, so he's got that working in his favor. He also got Jean Wagner, who is a happy little ghost and a solid addition to the team, so he can't be all bad, right? Right.

Sion is a hard one for Jean because he intimidates him. It feels like Sion is just trying to be nice and helpful, but he just knows so much more and is clearly more worldly and knowledgable and Jean isn't sure how to deal with that. Every adult in his life back home is much more militaristic and authoritarian, and so a guy who is just being nice and friendly makes Jean suspicious.

He wants to be nicer and hang out with Sion more, but can't articulate that he's intimidated by him. :(

Jean is really surprised by how close he and Bertolt have gotten over the year they've been in Pokemon world! He always kind of dismissed Bertolt back home (I head canon that he would have been a lot closer to Reiner) as one of the guys who were too creepy and clingy with their best friend (hello, pot, meet kettle. you will notice that you both are black). Like, Bertolt's best friend was always so larger than life and boisterous that Jean never bothered to get to know Bert.

He's come to realize that that was a mistake. Since getting to know him better here, Jean has found out that Bertolt is actually a pretty great guy; he's reliable, cleans up after himself, lets Jean boss him around in their tent, and they keep each other's secrets. Jean would hate for anyone to know how much he still misses Marco sometimes, and the fact that Bertolt keeps his confidence means a lot.

Jean wouldn't vocalize anything this way, since it would still feel like a betrayal to him, but Bertolt is one of his best friends now, and he's terribly torn about that. He wants Reiner to show up, so Bertolt can be happy, but is also really scared of losing him.

Had the anime only been so kind!

If Armin is hoarding best friends, then so is Jean; he considers Armin one of his best friends, although he'll never vocalize that (it would still feel like betrayal if he did). He never would have thought they'd end up being so close, but a year in Pokemon land has done amazing things.

Like show Jean that he's kind of a nerd too. In their world, being smart was always secondary to being physically competent, and Jean knew he was one of those things but a lot more self-conscious about the other one. With Armin's help, he's been learning that it's okay to be a nerd smart, and that's one of the things he likes about Armin. Working his brain is like working a muscle he hasn't developed yet, and while he can't keep up with Armin, he sure enjoys trying. Who would have known that Discourse(tm) about books could be fun, or that learning about space is actually super neat?

In short, Armin is someone he values that he never thought he'd value, and while having friends (plural! more than one!) is still weird for him, Jean has discovered it suits him, and he has Armin, in part, to thank for that.

So would it make things better or worse if Jean knew that Sion's a king back home... >_>
