Bertolt is one of the 104th and a member of the survey corps so he is basically family in a way. There is just no way to go through what they've gone though -- the three years of training, Trost, the first mission outside of the walls -- and not build up some sort of bond of trust.
A MISTAKE TO BE SURE.
Armin sees Bertolt as a good friend. He trusts him completely. They ended up spending a fair bit of time together during their training while their best friends were off being loud and boisterous, so that is where there friendship started. Armin likes that spending time with Bertolt is nice and quiet. It is not such a huge issue here (cause they are not surrounded by as many people) but during training, being able to converse quietly with Bertolt and hang out with someone who wasn't talking about girls and trying to wrestle and who liked talking about books was really great. Sometimes Armin wishes Reiner could be here for Bertolt's sake (cause obviously life is hard without your best friend) but at the same time, he cannot help but think that without Reiner here, Bertolt might have a bit more chance to develop independence.
