ALSO, AS PROMPTS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: Last month's mini-events!

Effect: Friday, July 8: Flower Gift - All day, despite the season, flowers drift down from the sky. They’re harmless, beautiful, and smell lovely, but if trainers aren’t careful, they might end up trudging through rosedrifts up to their knees before long.
Swarm: Tuesday, July 12: Spinda
Effect: Friday, July 15 to Sunday, July 17: Worry Seed - Affected characters won’t be able to get any sleep. Does that make your character cranky? Does it damage their brain-to-mouth filter? The effects can last as little or as long as you’d like over this weekend.
Effect/Swarm Double Duty: Friday, July 22: Surf - Large waves appear in all bodies of water, including things like bathtubs and your Sawsbucks drinks (it’s just bean water, you know). Be careful on the ocean, but also, hang ten, dudes! The waves won’t destroy anything, but trainers are going to get wet on this ride. Also, oh god, small jellyfish Pokemon (Tentacool, Frillish, Inkay) happen to be swarming randomly in these bodies of water. GANBATTE, VICTORY ROAD.
Effect: Friday, July 29: Haze - The forecast is misty inside and out on this oddly cool July day. Affected trainers will find it difficult to remember things, whether those happened long ago or just five minutes past. The memories aren’t gone, of course, it’s just…foggy.
Swarm: Sunday, July 31: Illumise and Volbeat

video [[I'm crying how could you do this, Jack]]

[personal profile] brokencode 2016-08-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
[All of Angel's joy — the smiles, the elation, the sheer relief of simply being alive — rushes from her body, leaving her feeling cold. For a handful of seconds, breathing becomes an impossible challenge. Her spare fist clenches, gripping her dress as tight as she can. It's the only thing keeping her nails from digging into the vulnerable flesh of her hand.]

You...

[Her throat tightens up, the rest of her words trapped behind the wall. She lets her mouth close, the fight to speak being futile. It didn't take long for the fear to sweep the words from her head as it was, leaving her dumbfounded and simply blinking at the video feed.

All at once, however, the icy feeling beneath her skin turns to fire. This was meant to be her new start, her chance at freedom. Once again, Jack, the man who pretended to be what a father should have been, had cut her happiness short.]

It's not okay.

[It's easy enough for him to chalk her reaction up to the shock of being here. Hell, he'd been angry and confused himself. And he's used to all kinds of weird stuff! She hasn't left the same room in...well, a long time. Suddenly she's alone in a whole big new world? She's gotta be terrified.]

Hey, I know it's scary, but I promise. It's all okay. You're...okay, baby.

I forgive you. I'm not upset, Angel. You're not in any trouble.

[It wasn't that long ago that he'd been drunk and angry over the inescapable thought that he'd never see her again. He's watched her murder over and over again in his sleep - because in his eyes, that's what it was.]

[But it doesn't matter, because she's here. He'd been right, when he first got here. He has a chance to do it again. He can start over. Whole new planet, whole new ancient goodies to plunder. And now he's got her back.]

[Everything's coming up Handsome.]

Just stay right where you are. I'll come get you.

Stay away from me.

[Her words come quick, barely registering in her conscious mind before they flow through her lips. In her anger, she very nearly drops the pokegear, but just as it begins to slip, her grip tightens. She knows that he needs to see this, the anger, the fear — everything that he had spent the better part of two decades making her feel.]

[It won't make a difference, deep down she knows that. But in this place, with all this apparent magic, was it so hard to believe that it could have fixed what was broken inside of him? Perhaps if he could see just how much she had been hurt — by him, no less — it would all get better.]

[Of course it was. Even as he spoke, she knew deep down that he hadn't changed. That he thought she was the one apologizing was evidence enough of that.]

[Revulsion followed after her thoughts. She had believed herself to be so strong. She had told the Vault Hunters that she knew just how manipulative Jack could be. What should have been her last words reaffirmed that. But the only reason Angel had lashed out before was because she, and the rest of the planet, for that matter, had reached its breaking point. Now? Not so much.]

[Angel clenched her jaw, forcing herself to remember every single pain that Jack had put her through. She had to remember his monstrosity. She had to remember that the man she once thought of as a father was no more, and had been gone for a long time.]

Don't come anywhere near me, Jack.

thedifferencebetween: (that sounds like something not true)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-25 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
...Angel...

[Jack jerks back, torn between confusion and hurt and anger. What the hell is this?]

[God, and she's calling him 'Jack'. Okay, well, he did ask her to, to be safe. Couldn't be too careful, everyone thought the Angel Program was an AI. Kind of weird for a computer program, even an advanced one, to call him 'dad'.]

[But that was back home. And before those asshole Vault Hunters had ruined everything. The secrecy had flown out the window, then.]

Sweetheart, you...you don't know what you're saying. And you don't have to do that, here. It's not like back home. I realize this is all pretty overwhelming and exciting, I get it, I do! But come on. You're talking crazy!

Look, I know...I let you down. Things got pretty messed up. [By which he means he should have protected her better from the Vault Hunters. He shouldn't have played the long gambit like he had, that had been a mistake. He should have killed them all as soon as there were whispers of taking on the BNKR. Sure, he'd gotten Lilith, but he'd lost Angel in the process. That was on him. He can admit that.]

[But it doesn't matter anymore! She's here, she's fine, they're together again. That's what matters.]
But we've got another chance, baby. And I am not letting anyone hurt you ever again.

Now I'm coming to bring you home.

[In her 20 years of life, Angel had stood up to Jack only a handful of times. Back then, the threat of pain and being berated had terrified her into submission. It doesn't surprise her that, for that very reason, she was able to maintain her resolve. With considerable distance between them, and free from his machinations, she's standing strong.]

I know exactly what I am saying, Jack. [She spits his name as hard as she can, desperate for him to understand her revulsion.]

Dying is not what caused my problems. It was you.

[Her hand clenches tighter around the pokegear. It creaks against her palm, protesting her grip, though she doubts it will give way to her minimal strength. All the same, she loosens her fingers in the slightest.]

You will stay away from me, Jack. If you ever loved me at all, you will do this one thing for me.

[She knows he won't hear her — his madness would twist her words and his logic. He'll be on her trail as soon as she ended the call, of that much she's certain. But if she had inherited anything from him, it was his stubbornness. She would not stop trying to convince him to leave her be. Anything to maintain that small glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, her father might finally decide to listen to her needs.]
thedifferencebetween: (princess we talked about this)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
...No, princess, you clearly don't.

[Why is she doing this? Why is she fighting him like this? He said he was sorry! Or close enough, anyway. He forgave her for what she'd pulled with the Vault Hunters. Why was she pulling this now?]

Okay, we're not having this discussion right now. You'll feel better tomorrow, after a good night's sleep. We'll talk about everything then. This...this is supposed to be a happy time. I mean...I've just been a complete wreck since losing you, and praying to a llama to see you again, and here you finally are and we should be weeping with joy and falling into each other's arms, but sure, let's pull this crap instead.

You know, this teenage rebellion phase of yours is lasting way too long.

[He sighs, heavily. He's trying not to lose his temper with her. But she is not making it easy on him.]

Angel...of course I love you. I'm your father. Which is why abandoning you is the last freaking thing I'm gonna do!

I prayed to die, Jack.

[She swallows hard. Desperate as she had been to convey her emotions, and as agonizing as the burning behind her eyes is, the idea of crying in front of him seems like too much. She had no doubts that Jack would take her tears the wrong way, that it would further his drive to come to her "rescue." The last thing she wants is to hasten his arrival.]

[Even worse? He might actually mistake her tears for ones of happiness, just as he wanted

I died because of you. I was poisoned, to the point that I couldn't breathe a single breath without eridium. You did that.

Even as she talks about it, she can feel the pricks of needles against her skin. Her blood feels like it's running slower, weighed down by the sludge that had been her addiction for the last few years of her life.

You abandoned me as a father years ago. What you want now isn't your daughter. You want your tool. You want your weapon.

[Despite her efforts, a single tear makes its way down her cheek.]

Stay away from me. I don't want to die again.

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-26 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
...Didn't I just say that we're not having this discussion right now? But okay, fine. You're gonna push? Fine.

[If she refuses to calm down until they have this out again, so be it.]

I know your life has been tough. I know you've had to make sacrifices for the greater good - we both have. And it sucks. But that's how it goes, sweetie. You had to give up some years so that a whole planet can be made safe. That's...that's a pretty friggin big deal, Angel! But you're special. You could handle it. You could understand how important what we were doing is. And I did everything in my power to give you everything I could. It's me and you against the universe, Angel, it always has been.

And besides...you looked around lately? You looked at yourself? We're not in Kansas anymore, sweetheart. You aren't even a Siren, those don't exist here. Neither do weapons. You're just my daughter. And right now you're being extremely hurtful.

Not to mention...uh...well, Angel, for someone with a brain as massive and impressive as yours, you're being pretty stupid. What are you gonna do? You don't have money, you don't know how to take care of yourself. What, are you gonna sleep on the side of the road? No, you sure as hell aren't. There's a home waiting for you.

[He sighs again and his voice softens. Because as frustrated and upset as he's getting with her...it's still kinda nice to see her on her own two feet. It's been a long time. And she's acting like he enjoyed doing that to her. It was a necessity.]

[It's not anymore.]

Come on. I'll fix you dinner, you can take a bath, have a good night's sleep. Tomorrow we can go can pick out stuff to decorate your room.

[There's a voice in the back of her head, the same one that had played such a prominent role in her earlier life, that tells her to listen to him. He makes a good point — Jack is the only soul she knows in this world. His constant grip on her kept her from experiencing the real world. When it came down to it, Angel knows she lacks the bare knowledge to survive on her own in the real world.]

[Angel very nearly opens her mouth to say just that, when a faint rustling draws her attention away. The small sheep that Angel had woken up to was now pawing frantically at the backpack Angel had been gifted. The occasional baa comes from the Mareep, stopping only once Angel reaches into the bag.]

[It's there that she finds the P3000, left to her from some anonymous benefactor and forgotten until then. She isn't sure how the currency breaks down, but surely whoever brought her here wouldn't leave her entirely high and dry.]

I have money. And food. I don't need you. [The Mareep baas, sounding almost approving, perhaps even encouragingly.]

I don't need the man who couldn't think of me as his daughter until there was nothing else left for me to give. I am going to say it one more time, Jack. Stay away from me.
thedifferencebetween: (that sounds like something not true)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Not much, baby. Trust me, I know. That's not even gonna get you to the next town. You're being stubborn and lemme tell ya, it's not attractive, princess.

[And it's really wearing on him. This is all wrong. How badly did those assholes mess with her head? What low life dicks turned a man's own daughter against him?]

[Now he's going to have to undo all that damage.]

You've always been my daughter, Angel, you know that. How can you even say something like that? You're my baby girl. I love you. Look at the lengths I went to to protect you! To keep you safe! I...I just want you to come home. And I know that underneath all this...whatever it is, that's what you want, too.

[He tips the gear screen a little and hefts up his fat, flop eared houndour into view.]

And this little guy'd love to meet you.

[It's amazing how often the stupid puppy comes in handy as an ace up Jack's sleeve.]

Don't make me drag you home, Angel. I don't want to have to do that.

I can find somewhere to work. Someone might help me. I can...

[The more she speaks, the more hopeless she feels. It's nothing she hasn't dealt with before. For every complaint, for every word she speaks against him, there's an argument. He'd spent years preying on her weaknesses, and then convincing her that she would never be anything more than them. She might not have been the frail, dying girl that he had killed on Pandora, but she's no worldly explorer, either. The last time she'd even so much as ran a few feet was years earlier, a distant memory hidden behind trauma and eridium induced fog.]

[She can't even hope for rescue. As far as she can tell, anyone who knew her, or better, knew of Jack was a universe away. There would be no dashing rescue, no heroes to rescue her from his clutches. Even if she runs, she's in an unfamiliar land. With her luck, she'd run right into his arms.]

[As it is, the dog is the only thing that keeps her from saying yes outright. Her expression, thoughtful and sad, becomes something bitter.]

I'm not a child, Jack.
thedifferencebetween: (this is my sad face)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-27 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I will help you, Angel. I understand you, I know what you've been through. I'm your father.

[He scratches Doom Boner's head and purses his lips. He wishes she'd stop using his name. She doesn't have to now.]

Oh come on, who doesn't love puppies? But the point is... we had to give up a lot, you and me. Missed out on a lot of stuff. But that's all over now. I know what this place does, you're perfectly healthy. Probably pretty weak and wobbly, but still. We get another chance, sweetheart. Everything can be different here. I don't understand why you aren't happy about this! I got a nice house. It's a rental, but it's nice. Got a pool. A fireplace. You can have a normal life, baby.

I thought this was what you wanted.

[It's too good to be true. She knows it, just as Jack surely knows how much she wants to believe otherwise.

Dad...

[She hates herself, curses herself as the words leave her lips. She shakes her head, trying to clear herself of the thoughts clouding her head. It does little good, and instead she shifts to trying to hold herself. With only one hand with which to do it, the embrace just feels empty.]

What about the labs? The tests? You won't... do any of that, anymore, right?
thedifferencebetween: (this is my sad face)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-27 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
[He smiles when she finally calls him 'dad'. He's missed that, he really has. Now they're getting somewhere. She's coming to her senses. It's about freaking time!]

Why would I? I don't even have labs here, Angel. [Well, he does have access to the Rocket labs, but she's not getting anywhere near HQ. And without her powers, what is there to do tests on? Besides, he's got all the data he could possibly need already.]

You know what I've got here? A bunch of dumb cute animals and a greeting card company. Because this planet is...well, honestly it's ridiculous. And hyper peaceful. I don't get how, there's no government of any kind and the only punishment is community service, but that's how it is.

[And he's adapted. He's got to play by the rules, at least publicly, and keep general opinion on his side. He's playing a long game. He has time.]

[Right now, he'd really just like to have a proper reunion with his daughter. Obviously she needs to relearn a few things, but there's time for that, too.]

Anyway! You're freaking out over nothing, sweetheart. Now are you ready to come home? Get a hug from your old dad? It's been a real long time since I got to hug ya.

[personal profile] brokencode 2016-08-27 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Another hard swallow. Another shudder. The idea of his arms wrapping around her, horribly close to her neck, nauseates her. Even if he hadn't been the one to strike the final blow, he had dragged her close to death before. Getting close to him again...]

[But what if it was a second chance. He's certainly saying the right things, and she can almost pretend to believe it. She knows she should know better, that he's lied before (to her especially). But her heart hurts, longing for the idea of getting the life she never had.

Where are you? When would you be here?

[Her tone is soft, cautious even. She tells herself that it's because she wants to know how quickly to leave, but she's so caught up in his lies that she can't even begin to believe her own.

I miss you.

[Her heart thuds painfully. Of everything she's said, both to herself and to him, this is one of the few times she's spoken the truth. She can't say if she means that she misses the man he's supposed to be, or the man she truly is.]

[When it comes down to it, all she really wants is her father.]
thedifferencebetween: (hiya cupcake)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-27 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
[That's his girl!]

[He knew he'd get through to her eventually. He really shouldn't be surprised, that she'd been all mixed up. Between the shock of being here, the trauma of what had happened, the lies she'd been fed by Vault Hunters...but she just needed a few reminders of who really cared about her and had her best interests at heart.]

[It was like he'd been saying to Athena. Only a parent can really understand.]

[He smiles at her, content now. Everything's fine. He's got his Angel again.]

Give me half an hour. I'm in Goldenrod, but there's a type of fast travel here.

I've missed you like hell, Angel. Kept your picture with me, right here.

[He puts his hand over his chest, where his jacket pocket is.]

[It's easy enough to say that she misses him, that she wants him back. In practice, the idea is horrifying. She glances toward the exit to the town, hands trembling. Her gaze travels back to him, the sinister face that had haunted her for a decade, and then closes her eyes.]

[Her stomach churns, and if not for the fact that she hadn't eaten since... she can't even remember, she might have purged it of its contents. Instead, she forces herself to still her shaking hands, terrified that of him seeing her so afraid.

So soon? [It's a miracle that her voice remains even. The quaking that's slowly overtaking her body feels liek it's about to break her into pieces. Don't you need time to prepare?

[Before, she might have been able to manipulate him to some degree. She could sidetrack him, find something else for him to fixate on. But being so out of the loop, she can't think of a single thing to distract him with.]

[It's only been a few minutes, but she already feels as if she's made a horrible mistake.]
thedifferencebetween: (would I lie to you)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-27 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Prepare for what? Seeing you again? Baby...I don't need anything for that. Just you.

[What does he need to do? Put shoes on? Grab Cancer Bag or The Mountain to give him a ride? Neither's going to take much time.]

I, uh, don't think you're grasping how different a kind of life I got here. I don't have a whole space station relying on me, I just gotta check the cats' food and make sure the front door's locked.

[It sucks. It's boring as all hell, and he misses Helios. But it's all temporary. Once he's taken control of this world, everything will be back on track.]
brokencode: (Default)

[personal profile] brokencode 2016-08-27 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[She casts another glance toward the the exit of the town. How quickly could she run — how far could she make it before someone found her? Would her vulnerable body even make it to another town? She had doubted it earlier, but now she's faced with the reality of Jack actually being there. Even if she could make it, if her heart didn't give out fifteen minutes in, how long would it be until her food, her money or her luck ran out?]

[What would be worse? Starving, or being back with Jack?

Okay, Dad. I'll be here.

[She pulls her knees to her chest, eyes sliding closed. Her fingers continue to clutch at the pokegear, tight as she can manage. The device, despite the faint urge to end the call. The longer she waits, the less time she'll have to run, should she so decide. At this point, she can't even say whether or not her words are a lie]

[Death was far easier than all this]
thedifferencebetween: (can you talk?)

[personal profile] thedifferencebetween 2016-08-27 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's all smiles now. Everything's worked out. He's in control of things, Angel's behaving properly. In his mind, the discussion's over and done with. He's coming to bring her home, and he'll make sure to keep her away from...toxic influences.]

Hey, is there anything I can bring you? Maybe something special you want for dinner or something?

[This is supposed to be a celebration. Now that the messy business is out of the way - kids, huh? - he's intent on the reunion he's imagined in his own mind. She isn't the only who's missed out - he's had to miss out on so many things a father ought to have. Even the little things, like cooking her dinner or taking a walk together.]

[He's already getting ready, even as he talks to her, the gear screen bouncing and shifting as he checks the locks on the house.]

[The churning in her stomach grows as she lifts her eyes. Her heart picks up the pace, shooting bolts of fear from her chest to to the tips of her fingers and toes. Run, her thoughts scream. Run now.]

Dad? Can I hang up now? I want to rest...

She's not above hanging up on him. Confused and frightened as she is, if she's ever going to make a decision, she needs to sit down alone and think.]

I'll wait at the entrance. I promise.

[He really doesn't want her to. They used to be in pretty much constant communication. He misses that. He's gotten so used to her always being there...and having her back now, it kills him to think of cutting the feed. But he needs to get moving and she does need to rest.]

...yeah, okay baby.

You just wait for me. I'll be right there, I promise.

You'll be home and safe soon.

I love you, Angel.

[Angel stares into the pokegear, at the digitized image of her father. After a few seconds, her hands move, stumbling about as she puts her pokegear away.]

[Something feels off about his last words. It wasn't too long ago that they were the key to her prison cell, a sign of more torment to come. They had lost their meaning long ago.]

[Angel fumbles around in her backpack more, anything to occupy her time for the next half hour. Her fingers brush over the small box of food that she had discovered earlier, and then over the small wad of money. She casts a baleful glance toward the woods, then sighs in defeat.]

[Beside her, Mareep paces. Her eyes are locked on Angel, who swears that the little animal is concerned of all things.]

What shall we do? Angel doesn't expect much in the way of a response -- how could an animal ever understand her struggle?]

[But Mareep, apparently not one for Angel's rationale, begins to sprint off. Just a few yards later, she turns back.]

Mari! [The pokemon's cry is small, but Angel understands well enough. With a nod, Angel picks up her pack, sliding it over slim shoulders and securing it around her]

[There would always be a side of her that wanted to have her father back. But the man she had spoken to wasn't him. As far as she's concerned, that man died years ago.]

[And she meant what she had said. This was her new start.]
