Soap and water best, he knew, but they weren't exactly near any water.]

I never found my way back up. I ended up just looking for a path around. There is usually one, I've found, so it's not prudent to get back up there aside from saving time. Still, it's frustrating to be unsure as to why this even happens. It's doesn't make any logical sense.
