Ahh... I never did like the old tales about Jack O' Lanterns. They feel a bit unfairly biased. Imagine having the cleverness to trick the devil and only being punished for it!

[Medic leans back in his chair- the Pidove on his shoulder flutters his wings to regain his balance.]

Of course, that doesn't reflect back on your girl. She's certainly very cute!

And yes, that would be the woman who calls herself our "Mom". Yes, all of us. Every single person who comes here. It's very odd.

I think there's an implication that he did a lot of horrible things in life beyond tricking the devil and that's why he was stuck. Besides, the devil is someone who always tries to win the upper hand.

[Not that he has any first hand experience. He's battled a lot of things but "satan himself" is not one of them.]

Really? That's odd, I wonder what's wrong with her. [He rubs his chin.] You think she might be a ghost of some kind?

Ehhhhh. What do we know, though? Those old tales always change over the centuries- for all you know, the only thing that man ever did wrong was trick the devil! It's a bit like the story of Arachne and Athena. In some versions, Arachne was wicked and blasphemous; in others, her only fault was being better than a god. No matter which sin, she was punished and turned into the first spider, despite winning fair and square. [[medic voice] sometimes you can be better than god or the devil and you shouldnt be punished for that actually. no im not biased] No one knows, to be honest. I doubt that "ghost" is the answer, though- ghost Pokemon would have already picked up on that, I believe.

[Ray blinks a couple of times. Sure this guy isn't wrong, but...]

I guess you have a point, but I thought in every version of the story, Jack was seen as a bad person who got his comeuppance for messing with the devil.

Maybe there's an obscure version he's never read before??]

Details, details. Wouldn't you agree that, out of all beings, the devil would deserve to be messed with? He's the devil, after all!

I guess you're not wrong, but Jack wasn't really prepared for the long term. Or went to mess with the devils for reasons beyond personal gain.

[... it's weird, but the Pidove on Medic's shoulder starts making a sound- almost like laughter, but with coos. Medic glares.] Oh, you hush. Ahem. Anyway. We were talking about you newly arriving here, yes? The mother is very likely not a ghost, though I am curious as to why you think so. [Fucking. Subtle change of topic]

[ghoststanning]

[Ray frowns slightly, but! He is glad to be talking about ghosts some more.]

Well you know how sometimes ghost don't realize they're dead and instead repeat the same actions over and over? I was thinking that maybe that's the case with her! Maybe she died missing her child and, out of grief, started going through the motions and seeing everyone she comes across as her child!

[blutsauger]

Huh! That's actually rather plausible, honestly...

Again, I have my doubts, as no ghost Pokemon I've heard of have reacted to her presence in any notable way, but that doesn't necessarily count it out!

[ghoststanning]

Oh that's a good point. I feel like Jackie would have had some reaction to her if she was a ghost too.

So what do you think she is in that case?

[blutsauger]

[Medic shrugs.] Could be anything from a bad response to the traumatic loss of a child, to something extraterrestrial in nature. It's hard to tell for sure without further evidence, ja?

Yeah those are good theories. It's a shame we can't test them.

[He looks thoughtful.]

Okay here's a moral dilemma for you: If you're under the suspicion that someone residing in a house is a ghost or extraterrestrial and thus don't own the house, would it be morally right to try to break in?

[blutsauger]

My friend, I would say that anything is morally right if it's for the greater good. Especially if the "greater good" in this case is investigating one of the greatest mysteries of this universe!

Just keep the video rolling so I can see what happens!

[ghoststanning]

I don't know. As interested as I am, I don't have any equipment on me, and I have no idea if she's really hostile or if she's friendly...

[Jackie perks up and calls at Ray.]

Huh? Are you sure? I don't want you to get hurt too.

[She nods.]

Well alright then! With Jackie on my team, anything is possible.

[blutsauger]

That's the spirit! [It takes him a moment to notice his own pun, and he snorts.] Ah, sorry- but anyway. Don't worry too much about her getting hurt! The creatures in this universe are genetically predisposed to want to fight and to help their human comrades. They can take quite a punch, as well.

[ghoststanning]

[You're a comedian, Medic, because Ray laughs at the pun too.]

I guess you have a point there. I imagine if things get hairy I can always tell her to run away anyway.

[Jackie is about to yell in protest just before Ray sets off to the house.

He sets down his Pokegear in decent position to see him and he moves in front of the door.]

Ghostbusters, open up!

[And he kicks down the door!

... Or... he at least tries to. It doesn't budge at all from the kick.

Ray tries a few more time and there is zero progress.

Finally he crouches down to get a good look at the door, Jackie looking worryingly behind him.]

Gee, what is this thing made out of?

[blutsauger]

"Ghostbusters," huh? [Medic just. Watches with interest. He winces as the door refuses to open- that kick probably hurt a bit.] Maybe try a window? [This is just proper breaking and entering now]

[ghoststanning]

[It's fine, nothing's probably broken.]

Yeah, I thought they would be more receptive to that than if they thought some complete stranger was trying to break in.

[He looks through the window and tries opening it (with the help of Jackie) and it's very clear that they're struggling hard.]

Oof, I think it would be easier to break into a government facility than it would be to break into this house.

[blutsauger]

That wouldn't really clarify it, I think. I'm not sure what a Ghostbuster is, exactly. How many government facilities have you broken into? [Genuinely asking]

[ghoststanning]

Really? I thought everyone on Earth would have heard about us after the Gozer incident.

[You know, Gozer.

Ray looks a little flustered at the question.]

Not a lot of them... It was for a good cause, trust me!

[blutsauger]

Hmmm. Yes, I see.

So! A fun thing about this universe is the fact that most of us all come from different universes! So I have no idea what you're talking about, and unless you also come from a world where Australia is a hyper-advanced society of mustachioed shirtless men who punch yetis into blood with their bare hands, I fear we may not come from the same place.

Oh, don't worry about that. I've done plenty of the same.

[ghoststanning]

I don't know, it's been a long time since I've been to Australia.

[Look Ray would fucking buy anything.

But then he realizes something, he looks around, as if worried someone will hear him.]

So you don't know about that whole thing with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Australia's been like this for a long time, my friend. Flying cars since 1890, which I've heard isn't exactly the norm?

And no, I know absolutely nothing about a marshmallow man.

... I guess you are from another universe. Neat!

[Ray breathes an audible sigh of relief.]

Okay good, you don’t know about the time I almost destroyed New York City.

[.... he probably shouldn’t have said that out loud.]

Hah! I don't, actually, but it certainly sounds interesting. Personally, I haven't managed anything quite that destructive, which is a shame. I need to work on that.
