Around Goldenrod

Training, Steven thinks, would be easier if his Contracts still worked. Even if he hadn't been able to use Darkness for more than keeping their rented bungalow safe and skulking around at night without being seen, he knew the kinds of things that other people had done with the more advanced clauses. Being able to make people stay asleep or to scuttle down walls like a spider would have come in handy during this damn week of larceny bootcamp--and he can't believe he's actually trying to get good at this.

God, it wasn't like he wanted to be a criminal. He'd just come adrift in this weird other world, his body somehow restored into its default state, and been immediately press-ganged into what he was privately coming to think of as the Pokemon mafia. The Pokemafia?

Whatever. Organized crime with a really stupid uniform. At least they were going to release him into the wild soon. Maybe, if he was lucky, he'd even get off this stupid roof by then.

"How much longer do you think it'll be until the coast is clear?" he asks his companion under his breath.

Right. This might sound like an odd question to ask... but has anyone ever physically changed after being here for an extended period?

[All signs pointed to this world not, actually, being on the other side of the Hedge... but it was good to make sure.]

After an extended period of time? Not that I know of. People's bodies are changed into human ones upon their arrival, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone changing over time, not beyond the normal changes of aging, that is. Were there any particular changes you had in mind?

[He has to think for a moment about how to word this.]

Changes that make you more capable of fulfilling your role here, I guess.

Your role? Ah, you mean your designation as trainer or breeder? Nobody really seems to expect us to live up to that designation. You are even free to switch it, if you want. But in general, I would say that just learning to understand pokemon and bonding with them, as well as studying battle strategies or breeding manuals will help you become a better trainer or breeder. You really don't need any physical changes.

I'm not asking because I think I need them, I'm asking because

[ He stops typing for about half a minute, rubbing his brow and trying to think about what he wants to say. Eventually he types: ]

I ended up in another world for a while before this. The bodies of people there *would* change after a while. You'd start to be able to see in the dark or maybe you'd get extra joints in your fingers. If someone worked with animals they'd start to look like the animals they worked with. I'm back to normal here. I guess I just wanted to make sure this place doesn't follow the same rules.

"I dunno, how long do you plan on hanging around on the roof?"

The Australian-accented voice is at regular volume: and directly behind Steven. Because when he turns, there's a man who looks to be in his mid-twenties, wearing a overly large singlet and underwear and nothing else; with one hand on a fat little Duskull that is glaring daggers at the uniform Steven is wearing. "Because I will shove you off it before I call the cops."

In that case, no, nothing like that seems to happen here. I've been here for three years myself and I know people who have been here for close to a decade. If that sort of thing happened to people here, I think I would've heard about it. There is no reason why someone would keep that secret from the rest of us otherworlders. Things can get a little... strange during those weekends, but everything goes back to normal once it is over.

Steven, his Misdreavus, and his Woobat all turn around at once.

Goddamnit.

"Look," he says, putting his hands in the air. "I haven't actually done anything larcenous yet. This was just training. For casing a joint."

His trainer, he notes sourly, has already abandoned him.

The Duskull immediately wooshes out from under Gil's hand to bob menacingly between him and the Rocket's team. Its eye glows a fierce red as it stares down the Misdreavus in particular.

Gil himself looks... unsympathetic. "You know that's not helping your case, right? Because telling me you're planning on casing a joint isn't helping your case."

"I was being trained," Steven says, through gritted teeth. "My admin ditched me. Look, I was press-ganged into being a Rocket—it's not like I've had any choice in any of this."

"You're a big guy, you didn't just try and deck 'em? I did." It hadn't ended well, and it was a damn good thing he'd already found Max - and the Duskull hasn't looked away yet - but it's also massively hypocritical when Gil is ripped like a prize-winning bodybuilder. Or a shaved bear.

Steven glares at him. "Good for you," he says through gritted teeth. His two Pokemon move closer to him, protectively. "Where was I supposed to go? This isn't even my coun— region," he self-corrects a syllable too late.

Gil isn't subtle about how his eyes widen, and he quickly reached forward with both hands to grab Max and pull the surprised ghost back.

"You said country." He's staring intently; if one was generous, it could be said it's animalistic. "Where? And don't bullshit me - I'm from Australia."

Which could mean nothing, or it could be everything.

"America," Steven replies, guardedly. "San Diego, California. You're another one of us, then."

"I have a very loose definition of 'us'," he says snidely, releasing his Duskull again. The poor Pokemon looks very confused between the two humans, but Gil just gives him a quiet, "It's okay, bud, we're friends now. It's complicated."

He turns his focus back to the American. "I'm Gil."

Not what I'm talking about, kid.

[Are they a kid? Given that they're obnoxiously using font colors, he's going to assume they are.]

"Steven. And I meant that you're another one from an earth like mine," he adds. "There's more of us around."

Okay. Well. That's a relief.

february's like the right season for this kinda thing right
personal ads and junk

figured id' put out a line or something, see what happens

i'm looking for like a really good rival?
or nemesis or whatever you wanna call it

ideally a real goody twoshoes type but i'll give a grumpy antihero a shot, thy're popular these days right
musical ability's a plus, we could have some real rockin sing-offs during battle and stuff
but i'm willing to work out themeing and junk one on one, i'm flexible
all i really ask for is passion and creativity vis a vis trying to foil any schemes i come up with

normally i'd prefer to let this kind of thing develop all natchylike, but a girl's got needs you know

Okay okay okay, so.

[The video is slightly awkward, tilted at an odd angle down at a large basket full of Applin. Murphy is managing to hold it both arms while also juggling her Pokegear - all of which is made more awkward by the shifting mass of wiggling fruit-Pokemon.]

They look like apples, obvi. And Dexter says they're part dragon. Which- sure, yeah, I seen weirder dragons since getting here. But- whoop.

[She stops a second to nudge one of the Applin that's attempting to clear the lip of the basket back down inside it, before it gets high enough to actually risk falling.]

Careful there. But, point is, apples and dragons. That's like a couple myths or fairytales sort of wrapped up in one. Like- okay Snow White didn't have a dragon in it, but it could have. The queen could turn into a hag, she could probably manage, like, a small dragon. That kind of thing never actually WORKS, but sometimes it's about style, you know.

[Murphy pauses, mentally jogging to catch back up to her own train of thought.]

But- uh. These things feel like they're probably kind of significant, you know. Or they should be.

The colors are too bright here, the people too friendly, and she's never seen a town so pretty and put-together that didn't offend her. The thing is, she has a mom, so when the woman had called herself that after Katniss had asked who she thought she was, well...

Yeah, definitely a dream. Especially after she'd pressed the button on the red-and-white ball, and a little owl had come out of it. An owl that had started to talk. ]

[It is a quiet day in the Goldenrod Department Store, and a stray Pokemon seems to have decided to cause problems on purpose.]

[With a loud crash of glass, a Galarian Meowth has dropped from the ceiling, shattering a display case of evolutionary stones. After shaking itself off for a second, it deftly bites onto one of the rocks and dashes off at high speeds.]

Oh noooooo! That cat grabbed one of the stones!

[Helpful commentary offered by a short, tan-skinned woman in slightly too-theatrical distress.]

Someone should go catch it. I can watch here, it's fine.
