ALSO, AS PROMPTS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, and in the spirit of Halloween: August's GHOST TRICK event!
O-Bon festival: The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!
On the last evening of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.
Who you gonna call?: Remember “The Ghost of Maiden’s Peak”? Well, some of the local Gastly, Duskull, and Yamask seem to have gotten it into their heads that this kind of tomfoolery is somehow good medicine. If your trainer had someone in their life, someone now dead, that they have unresolved business with, these ghosties may take it upon themselves to play a little dress-up and follow your trainer around in the guise of said dead person until the issue is resolved. It’s their way of saying thank you for all the spiritual appeasement of the festival.
These ghosts won’t speak; Pokémon don’t talk, after all. So yes, your trainer is going to be followed around by some silent echo of their past who will not leave them alone.
Or, of course, write your own!

Alright, here I go!
[That's the signal. From its perch, Millie picks its target and uses hypnosis, meaning the poor thing is in no position to duck away when Manaka tosses the ring. The hoop hits its mark, the Diglett letting out a startled noise as the impact jerks it awake again.]
Ah, I got one! ☆

The Digletts, though, do. And boy, are they pissed. The victim of Millie's hypnosis is at the front of the stand making a scene, and it's fellows have joined it in throwing accusing chittering and glares at Millie, if not Manaka directly. How dare she! What nerve! ]
I believe you've offended them. The game's not as fun if you try and cheat, you know.
[He can respect a desire to win, but really, one should choose their battles with some tact.]

Millie, on the other hand, is absolutely tickled pink(er) by the fallout. She lifts one of her stubby paws to her mouth, giggling a merry ufufu~.]
Says who? [Manaka doesn't appear to be all that fussed, either, still smiling when she turns back in Gil's direction.]
no subject
Well, the Digletts, for one~
The game has rules, and it's a game for them too. It's rude to disregard them for your own petty gains. You have to earn the prize.
[As long as it was just that: a game, a simple contest, with minimal stakes. But rules change with the stakes, anyway, and it's uncouth to go into philosophy here.]

All I did was introduce a new rule to the game. It's their fault if they don't notice or get upset instead of playing along.
[They're Pokémon too, after all. She's sure they have all manner of tricks they could use themselves.]

You can't just make up rules as you go in a game! You don't play poker and halfway through decide you can draw from a separate deck. That defeats the purpose of declaring the game. By leveling playing fields humans...and I suppose Pokemon, can overcome cultural and station barriers, if only to fool themselves into feeling as equals. Half of civilization is built on that illusion!
[He sighs and runs a hand into his hair, catching himself. She got him all riled up with how...blatant she was being. No subtlety, no tact. A lot like his other half, really. Maybe she was some spoiled royal brat.]
"How embarrassing, I'm arguing during a festival. Disrespectful."

[His frustration with the conversation isn't hard to catch, and she meets his grumbling with a laugh. Clasping her hands behind her back, she leans forward slightly, her expression airily playful still.]
Mm, don't worry so much! You're supposed to be having fun.

[She reminds him of someone, or a kind of someone, maybe Ishtar. That kind of mind numbing confidence and unshakeable ego. He had very little patience for them, even at his most virtuous.]
I was. Your attitude precludes it. You owe me a try, but I'll accept wine.
[He dismisses her with a glance, twirling the rings on a finger to signal to the Digletts that he's up for more attempts. They, at least, get a smile out of him. They're just so...cute and charming.]
