ALSO, AS PROMPTS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, and in the spirit of Halloween: August's GHOST TRICK event!
O-Bon festival: The streets are lined with NPC-run stalls for food, games, and the assorted tchotchkes of every summer festival you’ve ever seen in your animes! There’s Goldeen Scoop, heaping cones of Swirlix Candy, Test Your STRENGTH (there are two different machines for people and Pokémon; HM04 not required); basically, if you can think of it, it’s there. There will also be a yukata rental stall if you want to go full hog on the cultural side of things. Ecruteak boasts a small stage where the Kimono Girls give a short performance once every two hours; the festivities in Lavender Town are a little quieter, but they also have Haunter-shaped ice cream treats. When you lick them, they Lick you!
On the last evening of the festival in either location, there will be a large bonfire and traditional bon-odori dance in which everyone is welcome to participate. In Lavender Town only, they also set paper lamps afloat in the water past the cliffs.
Who you gonna call?: Remember “The Ghost of Maiden’s Peak”? Well, some of the local Gastly, Duskull, and Yamask seem to have gotten it into their heads that this kind of tomfoolery is somehow good medicine. If your trainer had someone in their life, someone now dead, that they have unresolved business with, these ghosties may take it upon themselves to play a little dress-up and follow your trainer around in the guise of said dead person until the issue is resolved. It’s their way of saying thank you for all the spiritual appeasement of the festival.
These ghosts won’t speak; Pokémon don’t talk, after all. So yes, your trainer is going to be followed around by some silent echo of their past who will not leave them alone.
Or, of course, write your own!

[Blitz makes a disgusted sound, and Jean bends his knees a little bit to pick him up. The Voltorb is surprised, but allows himself to be tucked under Jean's arm and carried like a basketball. He understands that something is a little off right now, and he's pleased that Jean chose him to cuddle instead of his Rattata, even though he is decidedly less cuddly.]
Don't worry, buddy, I know you'd have gotten them if they were flying types.
[Reassuring Blitz is easy, but it only takes so long. As they wait for the puppy to come back, Jean looks at Mikasa out of the corner of his eye.]
The woman... is that your mom?
[She looks just like Mikasa, after all. There's no need to say who Jean's ghost is. Mikasa knew him too.]
no subject
[ Maybe they will figure it out somehow, accidental or not. Also since Mikasa doesn't have her cuddle monster here right now, she is quick to put her hands into her pockets while she keeps fidgeting her fingers there. ]
Besides they might just come back even if we attacked them.
[ Who knows about ghosts, when they are doing shit like this to people. Mikasa looks at Jean when she hears the question. ]
Yes. ... .... [ And the puppy is back! But so are the familiar looking peoole too... Mikasa sighs, not picking the puppy back up just yet and tries to think what else they could do. Ghosts won't talk but they can't be chased away either as if they are waiting for something. ]
... Maybe they are waiting for us to talk about them?
no subject
What... what do you even say to a ghost?
[A ghost who is really just a Pokemon being a dick? Jean can think of plenty of things he'd like to say to Marco, but he doesn't want to spill them to a Pokemon, and especially not in front of Mikasa.]
Do you want to try fire first?
no subject
Mikasa shrugs. ]
Usually... I --- [ pause. ] ... Try to tell her things that were left unsaid... They were killed when I was nine.
[ She's so tempted to try to walk away again but ignoring them didn't help earlier either. Still. There is a huge part of her that would love to run to find Eren, so he could calm her the hell down because she is not so calm on the inside as she seems to be. This is getting too personal for her liking. At least Jean isn't a total stranger. ]
No. Absolutely no fire.
[ Hell, if their options are fire or talking, even Mikasa chooses talking over burning them. ]

[Gods, that must have been rough. Jean knew Mikasa grew up with Eren's family, but he'd always figured her parents had died from a flu or something. The way she said that implies that it was something else, something more violent. Either way, Jean can't imagine losing his own mother at that age, and while he might not have the best words to console her, his tone is serious and heartfelt.]
[Blitz glances up from his spot under Jean's arm, then shifts to look at Mikasa from behind Jean's back. He considers a moment, then throws himself against Jean's side, making Jean stumble a step closer to Mikasa.]
Blitz, watch it!
[This one is strong. Go lay eggs with her. Blitz is electric, and he's Jean's Number One Pokemon, so that means Jean is probably electric too. The girl has a Growlithe, which means fire. Combined, they'd make very nice fire/electric eggs. Very strong, very powerful babies.]
Sorry, I don't know why he did that.
[Blitz rolls his eyes and calms down, and Jean stays where he is, one step closer to Mikasa. After a moment of agonizing over it, he reaches out and awkwardly touches her elbow. Physical contact is comforting, right? It's what... it's what the guy behind them would have done when Jean was upset.]
Okay, so no fire. [Jean shudders at what he's about to say.] So... talking to them?
[Yes. Talk so they'll go away and you can make eggs together.]
no subject
... Or maybe he won't even need to ask considering who one of the ghosts is pretending to be. That depends on how things go.
She doesn't move when he suddenly moves closer though there is a brief surprise in her eyes when it happens. If it bothered her, she could easily flip him to the ground or step away herself or whatever. ]
It's fine.
[ She can see that eye roll there, Blitz... But really, Mikasa doesn't mind his company. Or that he is one step closer now, that's okay. It's not too much. He is a ... friend? Sure she might have a long way to go to being very good friends with anyone else than Eren and Armin. It's like taking baby steps. And so Mikasa doesn't move or pull his arm away when Jean reaches out. Physical comfort. Not something she is good at but seems like it's also fine if he does that. Because she obviously doesn't mind. ]
No fire. [ Compared to that Merciless Attacking Machine that Mikasa is on the roads here with pokemon most of the time, that might be a surprising answer from her. ]
Or talk to... me ...about them... If... ummm, if that's somehow easier for you. They're going to hear it either way.
no subject
[Normally, the fact that Mikasa is letting him touch her would be cause for celebration, but Jean can hardly be delighted by it when this is so stressful. Sorry, Blitz, there will be no egg making tonight.]
[Jean looks over his shoulder, and it makes his heart ache. He knows it's a Pokemon but it looks so damn much like him, right down to the freckles and the neat part in his hair, and he... it... it's smiling. If Jean didn't know any better, he'd think his best friend was going to open his mouth and start talking to him, would say exactly the right thing to make Jean feel better about this whole situation.]
Um... shit.
[Blitz nudges Jean side, much more gently this time. You can do it.]
So... he's dead. I found him. [Jean's voice cracks a little at the edges.] It was... it was fucking awful. Like a nightmare come to life.
[Behind them, the ghost shifts forms. It's not smiling anymore; now it looks like he did when Jean found his body. If you didn't see it at the time, Mikasa, now's your chance!]
no subject
[ He is a lot better at this thing called talking than Mikasa anyway. Blitz may or may not have more reasons for all those thoughts later, no one ever knows how situations go. Though if Mikasa could hear him, she'd just coldly ignore him so maybe it's good that she has no idea what Blitz is thinking.
She's still trying to not look at her. She remembers what she looks like, she remembers her trying to reach out to her to protect her from those people and she's never going to forget that screaming. She just... Tries to keep her walls up by not looking at her mother at all while the flashbacks keep repeating in her head.
And if she was brave like most people, she'd try to reach out to Jean now when he is .... obviously having .... a difficult time dealing with that ghost. Instead she waits patiently in silence. There's no rush. ...Then there's the part where Mikasa should come up with words and she is not good or comforting at all. ]
... You shouldn't have been alone there when you found him . . .
[ Not that they can change it among with many other things. So how is this going to roll? He tells something about Marco's death scene and Mikasa tells something about her parents? Maybe, or then one listens to the other first but that's almost as if she'd be ignoring her being there. ]
It's always awful and worse than any nightmares.
[ Mikasa glances over there, not expecting to see that but well. She looks at him for a moment, then she swallows as she turns to look at Jean again. ]
Especially when it comes out of nowhere.
[ Sigh. She really wishes she was better at this whole talking and comforting thing. She should be considering what their world is like but ...nope. Usually she leaves this to anyone else, this time that's not an option. It's also not an option to dodge the whole thing this time. So. She should probably say something about that day too... ]
We lived a peaceful life in a cabin at the mountains. ...They were... expecting Doctor Jaeger for a visit since he was the only one, who ever came there. ...My father died as soon as he opened the door... It took us a moment to even realize what the fucking hell just happened.
[ Congrats, Jean. No one else besides Eren and Armin has heard of this from Mikasa. So obviously she considers him as a trustworthy friend after all these years. ]
no subject
[Jean looks up, surprised when she says he shouldn't have been alone. That isn't something anyone has ever said before; most of the people they know just pretend that they don't know how it went down, and that's honestly what Jean prefers. It's easier to pretend than to admit that it felt like a part of him died right along with Marco on that day. And maybe it was a part that needed to die anyway, a part that had been holding him back, but if it had meant Marco would live, then he would have gladly carried it for awhile longer.]
[He nods when she agrees with him, but doesn't look back. That's for the best; he wants to remember Marco the way he was before Trost, not the way he was after.]
[When Mikasa starts sharing, it's obviously hard on her. Jean has never heard this story before, and he takes another step closer, sliding his arm through hers. It could be considered chivalrous, he supposes, but really, he just wants some physical contact himself, and figures she probably does as well. He'll try not to think about how, if Eren or Armin were here, she wouldn't be paying attention to him at all, and he'd only have Blitz to hold onto while grappling with his own demons.]
That sounds horrible.
[An inadequate word, but the best one he has.]
[Yes, good, that's the way, now tell her how strong and powerful you are and how good your eggs will be!]
