No, we're not. They're a big help, even when they're small.

[He turns to Grant, smiling in reassurance. And offers his hand - left one. The right one's still metal after all.]

I'm Shiro.

[woofdad]

Ah-- Grant. [He takes Shiro's hand to shake immediately; doesn't really matter if it's metal or skin, after all.]

Obviously you've been here a while longer than me, so - how long?

Nice to meet you.

[There's a sympathetic tinge to that smile.]

I'm a little past four years, now. It's gone by fast.

[woofdad]

[Four years... it sounds like such a long time, it gives Grant a moment's pause. Are they really going to be here that long? It doesn't seem like the worst place to be, at least, but--

Grant opts not to get into that with Shiro. He doesn't need to start complaining to a stranger about how he's got a life to get back to, his kid's supposed to be starting school, and so on and so forth. Presumably, Shiro had a life before all this too.

But he doesn't seem too bothered by being here. It's gone by fast, he said. That has to be a good thing.

So, he just nods, taking that in, though his concern probably shows on his face.] Uh... do you like it?

[Do you like it here. What is this, Grant, a job interview.]

[Grant, honey. You have possibly zeroed in on the one stranger who would absolutely listen to your problems. And probably try to help to the best of his ability. That's just how he be. It's probably in his DNA or something.]

[He does, however, offer up a smile - a sincere one, while he reaches up to pat his Tropius' neck.]

It's got its ups and downs. But ... it's mostly quiet. So, I really can't complain, in the long run.

[woofdad]

[Ironically, Grant may well do the same for Shiro - but he doesn't dare say too much about himself to someone he's just met, however nice he may seem, for a number of reasons.]

Yeah? Quiet is good, at least.

[As he speaks, watching Shiro pet his Tropius, his own Pokemon comes trotting up, catching up after stopping to sniff at some particularly interesting mound of sand.

...Actually, "trotting" might be less accurate than "shuffling" with those little legs. The Swinub nudges at Grant's leg and he stoops down to scoop her up.] --Hey, buddy, you done over there?

Yeah. It is. For a lot of people - we get a lot from really difficult places to survive. A lot of people from the middle of a war, or fight.

[And for them, it's great. It's a breath of fresh air.]

[Like for his teammates...]

[Tropius - Green - swings her head around to sniff at the approaching Swinub. Oh, hello friend!]

Your starter?

[woofdad]

[That... would track, actually, from his limited time here so far. Not that Grant can think of much to say on the topic, given how different his own circumstances are. So he just nods.

And then there's a much easier subject to talk about.] Guess so. I've, uh-- been calling her Truffle.

[Is that dumb? He hopes it isn't dumb. Truffle snorts and wiggles contentedly in Grant's arms.]
