[ The Oricorio notices that they have an audience long before Orpheus does, flourishing and spinning with greater enthusiasm and effort for the sake of the eyes on her. Orpheus only opens his eyes after she does a rather impressive backflip, like a little gymnast on a balance beam, rattling the fence with her landing and snapping him out of his meditative state. He follows her beady-eyed gaze to the man and the Duskull, jolting a little in surprise when he finally sees them. ]

Oh! My, hello. My deepest apologies, I was so lost in thought that I didn't notice you. Have you been here long?

Long enough. I didn't mind, though. Your performances- [ and he nods to the lovely little bird here as well- ] were... peaceful. I didn't mean to startle you.

[ The duskull seems happy too! They vibed with it. ]

If you can do that with just some wood, I'd love to see what you can do with a proper instrument.

[ Orpheus smiles, his oricorio taking a deep bow behind him. ]

Why, I am gladdened to hear you enjoyed listening in, and watching my friend here. She is an incredible talent, is she not? The likes of which I had never seen among the birds of my homeland, graceful though they were.

[ The oricorio preens - literally - over the praise, looking as smug as it's possible for a bird to look. ]

And I would gladly perform for you properly, but unfortunately my lyre does not seem to have made the journey here with me, and I have yet to find a suitable replacement. You wouldn't happen to know where I could find another one, would you?

[ He sees you, oricorio, and he's amused. But then he frowns a bit, shaking his head as he speaks. ]

I'm afraid not, I'm... not from here either. I didn't realize possessions didn't come with. But I heard some gossip about a- a city with a good market?

Is there anything else that you play?

I think, technically, my lyre was less mine, precisely, and more owned by my employer, so that may have been part of the problem. [ Not that it'll do Hades much good without someone to play it. ]

I will keep that in mind, though, if and when I choose to venture forth from this place. And I do play a few other instruments, mainly the kithara and the aulos - though, oddly enough, I have not seen or heard either since my arrival here, even with the ever-present music that seems to play wherever any of us go. It is very strange, isn't it? I scarcely recognize the instruments being played, and, if I may be so bold, I do consider myself somewhat well-traveled and experienced in various forms of music.

[ Where's he heard those before...? Not. Anything recent. for sure, but they do sound familiar... ]

Those sound lovely. Maybe it's a stylistic difference though?

[ It definitely is. ]

I'm not even sure where the music is coming from, but. Home was kind of like that too, so it's not as surprising to me. It's kind of comforting, actually.

It could well be. Any instrument can be wholly transformed in the hands of a suitably skilled or innovative musician. Do you mean to say that your home had music that played from an indiscernible source at times as well, though? How interesting.

[ He says this politely, but even Orpheus thinks that might be a bit much. How would you ever practice, or play a different song than the one in the background, without being hideously distracted? Well, if this man is comforted by it, that's good, at least. ]

when u live in a music video things just happen

[personal profile] ghostpeppered 2021-01-08 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Occasionally! You get used to living on a rhythm, but I always found it would go quiet when I was practicing violin, or... just singing goofy songs to my girlfriend. It usually knew the mood, I guess?

[ That, or it'd change to accompany him if he was doing particularly well. But that's beside the point. ]

[personal profile] aglancetothestern 2021-01-09 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, my. I can scarcely imagine. What sort of songs were these, that you heard? Did you ever find out who composed them, or was that as mysterious as their source?

[ He pauses, thinking for a moment, then adds; ]

What is a violin, though, if I may ask? An instrument? I have not heard of it before.

[personal profile] ghostpeppered 2021-01-10 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it kind of depended on the situation, I guess? On a good day, it was nice and cheerful. If it was raining it might have been slower- either somber or relaxing. We never did figure that out though... Oh!

[ Ah- well. Lewis supposes that if he didn't know the other's instruments, it would make sense for him not to know his. ]

It is, yes. It's a wooden instrument with strings- hold on, I might be able to find something to show you.

[ Carefully, Lewis takes out the PokéGear, scrolls through until he finds a suitable search engine, and pulls up a video of a violin player. As the music plays softly from the machine, he almost sighs as he turns the screen so that Orpheus can see. It's been quite a while since he's gotten to play. ]

So it even changed to suit the circumstances? That's fascinating, and more than a little strange. Although I suppose if you're used to it, then the absence of music would be even stranger.

[ Orpheus leans in and watches the video with considerable interest, brows furrowing in confusion as the violinist takes up the bow and starts to play, only to relax again as the music washes over him. ]

Why, that's incredible. The - [ he makes a gesture, mimicking her hand on the bow, unsure of what it's called. ] - device she holds, she draws that across the strings to make them vibrate, rather than plucking them, yes? That's marvelous, I've never seen or heard anything quite like it. What a rich and powerful sound. And you play as well, then?

[personal profile] ghostpeppered 2021-01-12 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's pretty much it- if the music is gone, something is very wrong.

[ Still, there's questions to answer, and Lewis nods in affirmation. Once the video is done, he turns the Gear off but doesn't quite tuck it away again- just in case. ]

Yes, I do. I, ah- I do sing as well, but I'll admit it's... been a while. Some songs do require plucking the strings of a violin at different points, but generally using the bow is the focus- that's what she was using is called.

[personal profile] aglancetothestern 2021-01-15 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
A bow? Like the weapon? I suppose I can see the resemblance. How clever and unique a way to produce sound! I wonder how such an innovation came about. Could it have been by accident, perhaps? Someone inadvertently dragging two strings at tension against each other, only to hear the resonance and recognize its potential?

[ He looks thoughtful for a moment, before bringing his attention back to Lewis. ]

I would greatly enjoy hearing you sing or play, one day, if you were feeling up to it, of course. If not, I understand entirely - my muse was lost to me for a great long while, once, and with her my voice and will to produce music of any kind, before I found her again.

[personal profile] ghostpeppered 2021-01-31 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ah- you know, that's a good question. I don't think I ever thought about it. I guess it's been around for my world for so long that I just accepted what we got at face value...

[ Lewis gives the man an almost sheepish smile- he looks like his old self again, for a moment- and chuckles. ]

If I get into the mood for singing, I'll let you know. But I've been wanting to play for a while- I just need to get my hands on a violin. ... I understand, though. I mostly sang with my girlfriend, or for my sisters. She wanted me to try doing some professionally, but I was a bit too shy to be honest...
