[The animals here are definitely weird, but... Dedue didn't think they could turn on this device. Especially a rat. Even such a well cared for one.

Budew begins wiggling and chirping furiously, which is nearly as shocking as watching a rat eat a solid brick.

Honestly, he feels obligated to keep watching, to see if he can find any evidence of the owner in order to tell them how their pet choked and died...]

[To the rat's credit... He doesn't swallow. He just keeps the Gear tucked away in his mouth, which just barely seems to fit enough of it in. Maybe not the whole thing, but...]

[Jostling. Rat's on the move! And only for maybe a minute or so before there's light again, and tile, and nicely painted walls. Gremlin starts chittering immediately, underneath a familiar voice that speaks up.]

Gremlin, what have I told you about putting the Gear in your mouth... No matter how excited you are. Is the- camera on? I hope you didn't capture anything untoward...

[There's a bit of ruffling - Dimitri is trying to get mostly dressed before he picks up the Gear - and then the blond's face shifts into view as he looks into the screen with an expression of exasperated concern.]

[An expression that immediately warps into shock, and Dimitri almost drops the Gear.]

Dedue!

[He's waiting for the rat to keel over, any second now, but --

Oh. Oh. Well, this is probably not the best way to come into the picture, but Dedue can't say he isn't relieved to hear and... maybe only see Dimitri once he actually addresses the camera.]

Your Majesty. I apologize. I did not intend to intrude upon your privacy.

[At least Dimitri had his pants on, so, that's fine. And also the last thing on his mind, with him hastily rushing out of his bathroom.]

It's - no, that would be Gremlin, he has more energy than sense - no, I'm sorry Gremlin, you did very good, thank you for telling me- Dedue, did you just arrive?

[Dedue nods along, packing what meager camp he has set up; no more than a sleeping bag, a meal, and his guide book. On the other hand, Budew lazily watches Gremlin and Dimitri scamper back and forth in the little box.]

That is convenient. I will hasten to the city, then. Cherrygrove -- do you know it?

Yes, it is - a three days journey on foot from New Bark. But it can be made quicker - with certain Pokemon -

[Alright, this is as good as he's going to get, he thinks. His armor might slow him down in this case, since he doesn't have his Crest to back him up, so he will have to leave it with the others... That will be fine.]

You've tamed a wyvern since arriving here? [Clearly the only reasonable explanation. Dedue wasn't even sure this place had normal creatures like wyverns.]

Not a wyvern- a large bird whose adult form is called a Pidgeot. I haven't found any creature exactly like wyverns, or pegasi, in this land, but they have a great deal more variation in terms of what are considered steeds.

The birds can grow larger than people, and so can insects, or even creatures that look similar to dragons. The variations number in the hundreds...

[Alright, he's ready. Dimitri hauls up his backpack, his Rattata scurrying back onto it so that he's peering around Dimitri's head when he picks up the Gear again.]

Often you see the juveniles in the wild... They seem to have a fighting spirit, as there is something connected to sparring with one another that allows them to grow, and even change how they originally look. I will have to show you in a moment - I need to go to the Pokecenters, which are places where healers take care of one's Paliens. They also host the warping pads that I mentioned to you before.

[A giant bird, tame enough for a person to ride? He supposes it can't be much different from a wyvern or pegasus, but still a novel concept. And yet...]

Your Highness. I am eager to see you, but I must ask -- is it safe for you to fly on this bird?

[Dimitri is already going down some stairs as he answers.]

I trust Elshot greatly, as he has already been perfect in delivering packages when he was younger, and fights valiantly alongside my other Paliens. [A light grunt as he hits the ground floor with maybe a little too much speed.] I am positive that we will be able to manage it.

But it is winter, in this land, and a little chance of risk is hardly a high price-

[And that's around the time Claude's voice calls out, "FELIX, GO FOR HIS KNEES!" and the camera catches Dimitri suddenly falling forward. His expression isn't one of pain, or aggravation, but more a mild kind of surprise.]

[...and that's around the time the Gear falls out of his hands and turns off.]

[HOLD PLEASE]

[Around five minutes later, and Dimitri is back on the Gear's screen.]

I apologize if I worried you, Dedue. I have been told I should... perhaps exercise more caution and restraint before rushing off.

[Of course a bird is good at flying! But that doesn't mean Dimitri is good at riding it.]

Please, Your --

[Oh, shit.]

Your Highness?

[Although Dedue appears ready to pop a blood vessel by the time the feed comes back on, his tone stays level.]

Were you injured?

[Don't get Dedue wrong, he is already hurrying on his way to Cherrygrove, but Dimitri's answer will just determine how many people he clotheslines when he gets there.]

Dedue.

[It's a lightly exasperated tone, and Dimitri shakes his head. Dedue, you can't clothesline every single person who's ever hurt Dimitri!]

[Mostly because some of them are in the Imperial Army and they don't line up nicely like that]

I am fine. At worst, I may have a bruise on my shins, and that is it. Felix has done far worse than that when we have sparred together.

[And there's no point getting upset over Felix for sparring incidents. First, because that's just what happens in sparring. Second, Felix would love to work on how to combat being clotheslined, so really it would just be doing him a favor.]

At any rate... A few more of us than I thought will be coming over to meet you there.

[WATCH HIM.

Dedue knows when Dimitri is telling him to stand down, though, and so he does. For now. He's got his eye on Felix, though.]

It matters not to me, so long as I am able to stand by you once more.

And I'll gladly be by your side as well. Although...

[Dimitri pauses, uncertainty in every bit of him; he's never been good at hiding his emotions despite his best efforts.]

In this place, separate from Fodlan, you... do not have to stay alongside me if you do not want to, Dedue. This is a vast place, after all, with a great deal to it. And... no one knows of Duscur.

[No one would judge him based on falsehoods.]

[Dedue is ready to shut down Dimitri as soon as he sees that expression, but politely, he lets the king finish first.

Then he shakes his head.]

We know, and that is what matters. There is nowhere I would rather be, Your Highness. Please, put it out of your mind.

Of course you would say that. But - it is always something you can do, here.

[Still, Dimitri... can't help but feel relief that Dedue will stay by his side. Perhaps that is terribly selfish of him, but...]

[Well. Dedue means a lot to him. He's always meant a lot to him, in many ways.]

At any rate, we will try to make our way to you before the day is done. Cherrygrove is... a pleasant city. You will like it, I think.

[Although he hears Dimitri, it is simply not an idea Dedue can entertain. He searched for Dimitri for so long, that the mere concept of purposely leaving him again is nothing short of torturous.

... He'll need to make sure Dimitri hasn't been suffering too much, having been the first one here, all alone.]
