I mean, it's Dirk. He's not great at being happy? But I think he's been a fair amount happier lately than he used to be.

[ Of course. It's like Dirk's afraid to let himself be happy sometimes. At least Pumpkin's here to hug. ]

That sounds like him... But I'm glad to hear it. He deserves better than he gives himself sometimes. Not that he listens if ya tell him.

And he's doing pretty well for himself. I don't know if anyone's talked to you much about gym challenges and the Pokemon League yet, but he managed to beat the champion and the Elite Four—he'll be opening up a gym in Saffron soon.

[ She considers, just for a moment, what to say- does she bring up the whole shitshow that was her life? Did he already know? Would it be worth testing the waters? ... No, she'll reign it in for right now. ]

I plan on hittin some up, but t'be honest I've just been enjoying life. ... [ There's a fond smile, here. ] That does sound like him: gotta be the best, and probably most difficult. Iiiii don't think I've been to Saffron yet? This world really likes their colors don't they.

It's one of the easiest Kanto cities to get to from Johto—they actually have a train from Goldenrod to Saffron. It's a big city and a fairly nice one—but I'm still more partial to Goldenrod.

And yes. Yes they do.

I mean, I can't blame them? Shit's tight. We wouldn't have a lot without 'em- and what we would have would probs be heeeeella boring. It's just a lil silly sounding when you look at a map I guess- or thinkin' bout it all at once.

I've never been on a train before, is it cool?

Oh yeah, trains are great. Much better than airplanes--you get to walk around and there's a dining car where you can get something to eat. It's a nice little interlude while you're traveling one place to another.

Oh shit, that does sound great! Way better than just... [ A wave of her hand, despite how at ease she looks. ] Whatever.

[He chuckles.] Much better than being crammed into a small space the entire multi-hour trip with nothing to do but sit.

[ Not that she would know from experience or anything. Still, now it seems as if she's unsure what to say. The thought of an older Dirk is intimidating, the idea of talking about herself- even if it's possible that Dirk's told this man anything- is... icky. What now? ]

[After a moment, he shakes out some mini-donuts into his own palm and says, conversationally,] Did you know that Meowths eventually learn how to make money? I mean literally make it. It comes out of the metallic thing on their forehead.

Seriously? And that's allowed?

[ She thinks for a moment before shaking her head dramatically. ]

[ She does not actually understand the economy. ]

[He chuckles.] We're not entirely sure how it still functions, all things considered.

... Ideally, I would like to think that this is some sorta utopia type deal where money legit barely matters, so it doesn't matter that there are moneycats diminishing the value of a dollar probably literally everywhere and maybe there may be more bartering systems than anything? But like. Late stage capitalism has killed my weary soul, thoroughly.

[ LOOKS LOUDLY AT THE ROUTE OF THE APOCALYPSE ]

But hey! Its a nice thought. An' this place is still great regardless of the things that don't make sense. I haven't found much reason to be too suspicious- or at least nothin no one else has found, an' even then it's agreed to be weird but harmless. Which is really impressive because I am a pretty damn good sleuth! Nothin eludes me forever, not when I'm on it's tail.

I mean, in a lot of ways this world could be considered utopia. Universal health care for humans and pokemon, some kind of rent control that allows people to get small apartments on part-time wages, and even the local mobsters are much more about grand theft pokemon than murdering people.

[He smiles.]

Professional or amateur detective?

Oh man, I ain't the pro here- that's my girl Jane. She is, as one might say, the gutsiest of gumshoes, the smartest dame on the scene- and the one who actually knows how to detective.

I, however, am the best at finding things on the internet. I'm in an' out like a motherfuckin' thief, not a trace of what transpired... but I use my talents only for justice, naturally.

[ She's absolutely grinning as she talks, so it might be a bit hard to tell how serious she's being. Which is dead serious, but like, delivered by a New Yorker party girl type? (Not that she is.) Ehhhh. ]

I'm not too surprised at like, peeps from other worlds comin here with no relation? If anything all these people who are connected all showing up together just sounds crazy. Like, some kinda weird isekai narrative.

[Steven laughs at that.] My God, we might be, though. I could see very easily how this world might be a video game--our Pokemon already have levels.
