001. new bark

( some lady grinning in his face before shoving him out the door is, arguably, a weird way to start the day. after realizing that he's been shuffled away without his swords, zoro tries to get back inside only to realize that the door's been locked behind him. some mom...

no amount of shouting, banging, or headbutts against the doorframe (thanks carvanha) will get him back in there where, he presumes, his swords and the rest of his belongings are.

you're welcome to tell him to give it a rest if you spot a green-haired samurai preparing to launch a full-scale home invasion in this nice, suburban neighborhood. if you're more content with sitting back and watching, you might find yourself being recruited to the cause. )

002. new friend

( he's not willing to call his weapons a lost cause just yet. before he was shooed away, his mom [??] said something about a journey of some kind. maybe this whole thing is a test of his mettle, and having his weapons returned to him is some kind of reward. it's the kind of challenge one might run into on the grand line, so it's not entirely unfathomable to believe that this whole thing is tantamount to a one of those ninja warrior tiktok videos... if he knew what tiktok was.

so he's off, he guesses. somewhere. for something.

and this flying fish won't leave him alone, but that's all right. the fish did his best to help zoro with his assault on the home front, so he's more than okay with keeping him around as a companion. )

Thanks for your help back there. Are you sticking with me for a while?

( how zoro became so fluent in pokemon-speak is a mystery, but he's guessing from carvanha's scary smile that he's in for the long haul.

the first restaurant he finds, he stops in for food and, hopefully, drinks. he hasn't gotten any money, but he'll figure that out after he makes sure his new friend has had his fill. the table he sits at is largely empty, and he'll welcome over anyone who might have a better sense of what's going on than he does. )

003. new path / network

( his first days of travel are about as good as they could be. he spends his days wondering the woods and his nights sleeping outside among the stars. it reminds him a bit of his younger days, going wherever the road took him, but this time he has a floating fish to worry about. he also has his crew to worry about, none of which he's seen at all since arriving here.

one night, he takes some time to dig through his pack to get a better feel of what he's meant to be doing here. the phone takes the most time to figure out, and it's practically dawn before he finds a way to broadcast himself and his dozing carvanha to the world. )

Where am I?

( he means that in every sense.

[ “Did you get one, too?”

Zoro isn’t actually talking to Tsukuyo when he asks that question, he’s speaking to someone else. If he had in fact been speaking to her then her answer would have been yes, yes she did get one.

The one that Tsukuyo got is a certain grumpy looking cat thing. A litten, so it keeps telling her by repeating its name over and over. Anyway, said grumpy looking cat is currently very interested in a certain grumpy looking floating fish thing. It’s wandered away from the table the blonde is currently sitting at and is currently prowling, hackles raised, apparently debating when to launch its fish assault…

Is she supposed to be controlling this thing? It hardly seems correct given that she’s just been dumped with it but still, she’s not one for shirking responsibility. So she gets to her feet to retrieve her new pal - who has now leapt up onto Zoro’s table, paw at the ready… ]

Oi. Leave the wonky lookin’ little fish thing alone.

[ Nice. Complimentary. ]

( zoro is quickly learning that these little monsters are everywhere. he couldn't even pass from his home to this restaurant without passing pidgey, and skwovet, and rattata scurrying around. it seems as if the whole world is populated with these things, and the inside of this restaurant is no different.

zoro would be open to investigating further if this cat monster wasn't making moves to eat his fish friend. he just promised to look out for his carvanha, and he's got to keep his word, so he starts by shooing away the curious cat with a large menu while carvanha bears his oversized fangs and looks as if it's rearing up for a fight. )

Oi. Get your dumb, ratty-looking cat-thing away from Carvanha.

( he's guessing that's its name since it seems to be the only thing it says.

litten isn't as mangy as zoro makes it out to be, but you can't go insulting his fish without expecting to get something rude in return. )

[ Litten, for its part, looks more than a little disgusted at the indignity of this human thinking he can shoo it away with a menu of all things and then calling it mangy. It simply sits down on the table right where it is and stares down both Zoro and his carvanha, utterly brazen. Occasionally hissing in response to the fish pokemon bearing its fangs. ]

Cats like to eat fish. It's just floatin' there like a target, what d'ya expect?

[ Not that this fish looks particularly edible. It has fangs.

Really, she's just deciding that the litten is a little bit of a shit. But it's her little bit of a shit for the time being apparently and she will defend the cat. ]

( meanwhile, zoro and his pet fish have the same matching scowl of an expression as litten sits down like she owns the place. the nerve of this thing... )

I expected to be able to eat without being harassed by this furball. Control it.

( in a similar show of brazen energy, carvanha takes a chomp at it. near it. mostly as a warning, if this cat is smart enough to listen to such things. )

[ The litten evidently does not give a shitten. Apparently cats are the same in every universe, in no matter what form they take. ]

Why don't ya control yer overgrown floating sushi?

[ For her part, Tsukuyo does reach out to retrieve the errant feline from the table-top. But not before litten sees that chomp and raises the stakes... with fire. She wouldn't be able to name a fire type move or even gather that this cat isn't exactly normal but that becomes apparent soon enough, when her litten decides to issue a challenge of its own and burn away a corner of the menu that had been brandished at it so offensively. ]

That's new.

My sushi could kick your rat's ass any day.

( meanwhile, zoro's fish friend is setting itself to attack. similarly to tsukuyo, zoro doesn't exactly know what that attack is going to look like, but he doesn't want to see it. especially since carvanha is strong enough to eat this cat, probably, and zoro would feel at least a little bad if this cat became cat food.

he grabs his fish where it floats in the air and holds it in his arms. it snaps in discomfort once or twice, but it grows calmer over times.

...and then the cat burns half the table. )

Obviously that thing is too dangerous to be let around in public. Set it free in the wild before it burns you alive.

[ Obviously the cat thing burning half the table is a problem. Having some kind of cat that can set fire to things in general is a problem. At least when she scoops it up it seems slightly placated, although the scowl on its face kind of eerily matches its owner's as it says litten several times in a row. what is up with that? ]

I've been made responsible for it for some reason so I ain't just gonna dump it because it starts misbehavin'. That's a coward's choice.

[Sonico was minding her own business, of course, but her sinistea, Ocha, absolutely was not. She left the table they were sitting at, and started wondering around the restaurant as Sonico wrote down some notes of the places she's seen.

Ocha finds the peculiar scary man sitting alone and decides to say hi. By sitting on his head.]

Ocha I think we're ready to-- Ocha?

[Sonico is looking around for her pokémon, making an 'eep' sound when she figures out where she is.]

Ocha....

[She casually walks up to the scary man and smiles as best as she can.]

H-hi!

[Busty man, meet busty girl.]

( the fact that it takes a moment for him to even notices there's a pokemon on his head, literally on his head, just goes to show how thick-skulled he is. it takes his carvanha's bubbling laughter for him to notice, and then he goes cross-eyed in order to look up at it, which makes his carvanha laugh more. )

Oi, oi...

( he takes the little teacup off his head and looks at it closely. teacups don't just move around on their own. )

You're one too? They make 'em like this?

( who would have thought that the monsters of this world run the gamut from flying fish to kitchenware. he doesn't get to inspect it much further before someone is introducing themselves, which zoro welcomes because he could use all the help he can get. )

This one's yours? ...Does everyone get one?

[Sonico is standing straight and slightly scared. Though this man reminds her of her manager... hmm.]

She's a Sinistea named Ocha, who shouldn't have left my table but did. I'm really sorry!

[Ocha just blinks up lovingly at the man. Which means the goop inside the cup moves around and giggles.]

Also I think everyone does get one! Not sure about that yet though.

( noticing her apprehension, zoro frowns. she must be afraid of the scowling flying fish by his side. )

It won't hurt you.

( he thinks... zoro's only known this thing for an hour tops. he's got no idea what it's capable of, but he feels certain that he'll listen if zoro tells him not to attack this girl, or her teacup full of goop. at the way the inside of the pokémon sloshes, zoro feels a momentary relief over the fact that his captain isn't here. chances are luffy would try to eat it. zoro pats it instead. )

You don't need to be sorry. I didn't know we were supposed to give them names, though.

What should I call this one?

Oh! I just treat my pokémon as I do my cats back home! They all have names so I thought maybe this little one would like one as well.

[She looks at the fish and hums, not entirely sure what to name something so... weird.]

What about naming it something you like to eat, or drink?

( ma'am, you have a giggling teacup. you're in no position to call carvanha weird. besides, he's perfect.

he lets go of ocha and sees that it floats without needing help. maybe all of the animals around here fly. that's weird. )

... You're in the Pokemon world. I'm afraid they haven't given us the planet's name. You travel around with your Pokemon friend and you can get more Pokemon to be with you. There are a couple of possible career paths you can take. I breed some of them. Battling is also an option, but I'm not crazy about that even though some of the Pokemon love it.

[Several Eevees pop up and warble.]

( oh, it worked. zoro's more baffled by that than he is by with this guy is saying.

I don't want to fight Carvanha. Even without my swords, it wouldn't be a fair fight. Besides, it's been fine. I don't have a reason to battle it.

( there's so many different kinds. the ones that pop up on the screen look like a mix between a fox and a cat. weird. )

How do you know when your path is over?

Oh no, the Pokemon fight each other. But I don't like that either.

Well, if you take the gym challenge, eventually you fight the Elite Four and the current Champion. Breeders ... I suppose their path isn't over until they're sent home? Eventually everyone seems to be, although some are here for years.

Huh.

( he looks over at carvanha, who he knows could probably beat any pokemon he comes across because he's the best. something to think about. if carvanha wants to. it would be pretty shitty of zoro to force his new friend to fight when he doesn't want to. )

What I want to know is how I get my things back from the lady calling herself my mom. I don't have my swords here, so obviously I have to prove myself as the best to her in order to get them back.

Tell me these Elite Four's names and I'll beat them even without my weapons. I'll use my hands if I have to.

Yeah, unfortunately, you won't get your weapons back as long as you're here. They're still waiting for you back home, I guess, same as things like my motorcycle.

The Elite Four are only interested in Pokemon battles. And beating them's no guarantee you'll go home. Most people stick around afterwards, I think. They havta find new challenges after that.

Then I can't stay here.

( it's as easy as that. without his weapons, he has no reason to spend anymore time here than necessary. )

I have to leave.

Oh, buddy, I wish it was that simple. Nobody's allowed to voluntarily leave, I'm afraid. If they could, I'd be taking my Pokemon and going home.

[He wishes that was an option. He wants to go home, but can't stand the thought of leaving his Pokemon behind.]

( zoro hasn't known carvanha for more than a day or two, but he's also certain that he can't leave him behind. luffy would be glad for a new addition to the ship, especially an angry fish — he would make luffy laugh, and that's always a good thing. )

So we're all stuck?

Pretty much, for now. My Pokemon cheer me up immensely and I'm running a restaurant in Goldenrod City. And people are coming from other worlds all the time. Maybe your loved ones will end up here too?

[Oh, yikes -- he was caught staring wide-eyed for far too long. The boy gives a start at the sudden and, frankly, aggressive acknowledgement, then freezes for a moment more.]

Oh -- oh, no, I'm sorry...

[What is he apologizing for, exactly? Existing in Zoro's proximity, maybe. He
seems to struggle with himself for a few seconds more before finding his voice again.]
