I don't know. I mean, apparently a pokemon god llama is what brought us here, so it probably determines what people get. But I don't know if it just picks whatever pokemon it feels like, or what. It's probably just random.
Although I do like cats a lot, and I got a cat for a starter both times... I've had two, because I was back home for a while.
