[Ah, Olivine City. A nice oceanside city where almost everyone, from tourists to trainers to locals are out and about enjoying themselves now that the weather is warming up. With so many happy people milling around the beach and the pier, it might be easy to overlook one single person, but this person... certainly sticks out, as much as they don't want to.

It's not that they're doing anything odd, but their appearance... most people won't be wearing ankle-length black dresses in weather like this. Adding into how bone-thin they look and the shoddy cut of their pink hair... yeah, the kid certainly looks a bit odd. It also doesn't help that they seem to be talking to themselves.]

This is weird.... is this a dream? It can't be, I don't normally dream about nice things like this. People here are all happy and not screaming and running... [Their voice drops to a mumble.] I don't know why the others wanted me to come here, I don't think I belong in a place like this, it's too nice...

[They choke on a pathetic little whine as they hunch over, shoulders scrunched up and arms wrapping tightly around themselves.]

I don't know how to deal with this....

[Action 2]

[Not everyone can get along with their partners. Pokemon, like people, all have their own personalities, and those personalities sometimes clash with others. That can sometimes lead to a little.... friction.]

Ow! H-Hey, quit it!

[... Case in point: this pathetic display outside the local Pokemon Center. This poor kid is struggling under the weight of a pissed-off Deino, which has a firm grip on their ear and a good mouthful of choppy hair. They're trying to pull away, but the Deino isn't relenting, growling and grumbling and generally harassing its poor trainer.]

Please let go of me! I know that you're upset and I am too but I don't know how to deal with this!! I don't know what to do to make you not angry!!

[Chloe had just been about to judge the shit out of Crona when she realizes that just a couple of months ago, she was having a similar time with Munchies. She literally can't judge. It would be so hypocritical.

But, she never claimed to not be a hypocritical person, which is why she openly laughs at the sight before her.]

Yo, dude, you realize you can just, uh... put it in its ball? Then you won't gotta deal with that shit.

I-I've tried doing that, but every time he just-- ow ow ow!!

[They'd been reaching for the ball on their belt, but true to their word, the Deino seems to have anticipated that. It finally releases its grip on the kid's ear, only to snap down hard on their hand instead.]

C'mon, please stop that...!

Excuse me...but I..are you alright?

[Newt had taken some time to venture back to Ecruteak to visit the gyms there before heading out to visit some of the other towns he hadn't spent much time in. Thus him being here in Olivine. (Shopping for a gift for a certain lady friend of his but that's neither here nor there.)

His Audino, Queenie, is at his side carrying a bag of poffins they'd picked up and looking equally as worried about this young person as her trainer is. Behind Newt's legs is Oswald the Alolan Vulpix who is peering over at Crona curiously but cautiously.]

You seem as though you may be a bit lost. Confused even?

[The kid visibly flinches at the voice directed towards them, and while they turn a little towards it, they don't fully face Newt. Their eyes, too, seem to be doing their best to avoid his; they look first to the left, then right, then down. There's too many people around, they can't risk making eye contact with anyone while trying to avoid this guy...]

I'm not lost, other people brought me here. B-But this doesn't look like anywhere I've ever heard of, so maybe I am lost....?

[They're so far away from Death City, from Maka and their other friends... that thought, which has been plaguing them for so long in this new land, was enough to cause them to hunch over again, almost like they were hugging themselves.]

This place is really weird.

[That flinch and the way the young person turns but can't seem to focus on them is so much like the young man Newt had taken under his wing that he can't help but give Crona a gentle look.]

Other people? Were you traveling with someone? Perhaps I could help you find them.

[He keeps his voice gentle as Queenie let's out a twill of reassurance, clearly wanting to help as much as her trainer does.

Crona's comment on how weird this place is gets an amused noise from Newt and he offers a faint smile.]

It is quite strange, yes. Very different from where most of us are from I'm sure.

[Crona shakes their head at his offer.]

N-No, it's okay. I like this... being alone sometimes.

[Their traveling companions are nice people, but... they still don't really know the others. It's a little awkward being around them sometimes.]

Is it... different than where you come from? How?

[Newt notices and walks over. They look sad but it's the dream line that catches her attention.]

Are your dreams bad too?

[If Crona had been anyone else, they might have laughed at that. Oh boy... they're still not used to the idea of dreams not being bad.]

Uh-huh... I-I can just noy sleep sometimes so it's okay, but when I do...

[Memories of Medusa's experiments, of her torture and training and all thosr times Crona has slaughtered people on her orders. In more recent days, new and more disturbing dreams have started to crop up too...]

[Newt nods seriously.]

Dreams can be really, really bad. My dreams are bad too. ...but I have to sleep.

[Her own dreams are of the monsters, her family dying in front of her. Dreams where she's not quick enough or isn't rescued in time. Dreams when she wakes up trying hard to breathe because she's sure that something is going to tear out of her chest....]

....why don't you have to sleep?

Um... I-I can, but I just don't sometimes.

[Even on nights where Ragnarok doesn't wake them up every hour just to spute them... they're used to not sleeping.]

I don't know how to deal with some of those bad dreams.

Oh.

[Newt tries to think it over.]

I used to talk to my doll a lot....after bad dreams. That made me feel better sometimes.

Hey! Cut that out right now!

[This is obviously a delicate situation requiring careful yeah no, Penny's rushing up looking pissed.]

[And the air sure is suddenly getting sort of pink and misty?]

[On one hand, that got the Deino to stop chomping down on the poor kid's face! On the other... the strange voice and the mist makes the kid freeze too, so they're missing the chance to to pull the Deino off.]

W-Who's there? Why are you making everything all weird and misty?

Oh- I'm sorry! Don't worry, it'll be okay. It's not going to hurt anyone.

[The source of the mist, a Florges, drifts into view, staring fixedly on the Deino.]

AND YOU-

[And Penny is back to pointing angrily at the Deino as well.]

How dare you attack an innocent trainer like that! What's wrong with you?!

[Despite Penny's reassurances, Crona still looks a little uneasy. Even such a small and innocent-looking thing can be dangerous... right? That can't be good...

The deino, thankfully, has finally let the poor kid go to drop back in their arms, but that's more because of shock than actually being shamed into it.]

It, um.... i-it's okay. He's my partner.

[as if that gives him a pass to beat them up....?]

I- what?

[That kind of takes the wind out of her sails for a second.]

[Just a second.]

...THAT MAKES IT EVEN WORSE! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT YOUR PARTNER, NOT BEAT THEM UP!

[Maka does feel...quite bad about Crona's reaction to the whole thing. She (mistakenly) thought that introducing Crona to the beach of Olivine would be good for them, introducing them to a whole new environment, a little like the room in their soul, right? But that oceanless beach was vastly different from their environment now; too crowded, too noisy.

Still, it's not hopeless. She kneels down to be at level with them, holding out her hand and smiling gently.]

Come on, Crona...it's okay. We'll just take it slow, all right? You don't have to go swimming or anything, but you can let your Pokemon out to play with mine.

[Well, if there's one person that could kinda get Crona out of their funk, it would be Maka. They don't look completely reassured just yet, but their shoulders drop a little, and their eyes look up from their previous stare-down with the geound.

Most importantly, they reach up and take Maka's hand. Not a tap of the fingers on hers, or just barely a brush of their fingertips; Crona fully grips their friend's hand.]

I-Is it really okay? They... they won't get lost with all these people, will they?

[The willingness to have contact is different, even if Maka has gotten used to it at this point. It's...nice. It's so much more than she ever thought would happen with Crona, considering...

"You'll never see that child again."

As Medusa's voice echoes in her head, she finds herself squeezing her friend's hand as though she feared they would disappear again.]

No, they won't. They'll find their way back to us, I promise.

Okay...

[For all that Crona claims how difficult it is to deal with other people, they can be, well... at least kind of perceptive when it comes to Maka. Maka was always so... soft. Not treating Crona like they would shatter like glass, no, but she definitely treated them different than their other friends. So that pause, the sudden tight grip, kind of clues Croma in to something.

Too bad they're still not all that good at talking about stuff like that. For now, questions will have to be put on hold.]

Um... I-If there's somewhere you wanna go while we walk, we can go there if you want...
