Not as violent as you might think, oddly enough. Apparently the worst that can happen under normal circumstances is an easily remedied state of unconsciousness.

Which is surprising, given what they're capable of. There's about 18 different elemental types that one of these guys can be. Fire, Grass, Water, Electric, Normal, Fighting, Dark, Steel, Ice, Psychic, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, and you're going to love the last one: Ghost.

And they can use those elements for various attacks. They don't even need to be the same type.

The especially fascinating bit? It all works in a sort of complex rocks-paper-scissors configuration. Depending on their typing, Pokémon are defensively weak against certain attacks but strong or sometimes outright immune against others. For instance: Tesla is Ghost and Electric, and I believe your friend here is Psychic. If we had a battle, Tesla's Ghost-typing would give him the advantage.
