What happy, well-adjusted children.
His words are slow when he speaks, with pauses as he tries to pick them with care.]
It is true that I've probably called you my enemy back in our world, though I can't remember it. The last thing I remember is returning to the Wall after our mission. [Still, even if he hasn't lived it yet, if Annie had been confirmed to be the Female Titan, she would've become an enemy of theirs. He has no reason to doubt her words.] But... this is not our world. There are no Walls here. No Titans. The reasons for the conflict between us do not exist in this world. The sides that we were once on have been erased. Is there not a chance that we could be something different in this world?
[Not friends. The trust between them has probably been damaged too badly for that. But neutral, at the very least?]
This world is strange. I've been here for two years now. We could all be here for another two years. We could be here for a decade. We might be here for the rest of our lives.
[Okay, technically Armin doesn't know of anyone who has been here for that long, but it is still theoretically possible.]
Would it not be beneficial if we could coexist peacefully while we are here? Without needing to look over our shoulders?
They make flower crowns, it makes my heart hurt.
She hasn't followed her father's advice like she should, and she's seen the consequences. She's frank enough with herself to admit she'd probably change nothing, even if she'd know how things would end up. To be that person she'd been trained to be, and to learn she never could be.
Is there a reason for him to lie about the difference in points of time? No; not really. She's turning it over in her head to find what possible benefit to him there would be. She's not finding an easy answer, or even a partially obscured one.
Does he see that it takes trust to even take him at his word? He's too smart not to. That bothers her, like she's failing another test that she shouldn't be. ]
... This time difference bullshit is annoying.
[ And she's too transparent, if someone knows what they're looking for. Not in what she looks like, but in what she does, and what she says. She knows that. She can redirect, at least, knowing that. She meets his gaze, studying him for a moment, having squared off with only partial awareness of having finished turning at all. ]
Is it meant to be flattering, to think you'd be that dedicated to hunting me down? Or is the fear in the other direction, that I would find some reason to target you?
[ She cants her head to the side, mostly to shift her bangs out of her eyes. One arm settles across her stomach, hand wrapping around her elbow. Defensive and closed off, like she is usually, holding herself at a distance. ]
You say can we be something different. Like what, exactly? We're already acquaintances, we've been comrades, you say we don't need to be enemies. So what, then? Friends? Lovers?
[ There's such a dry, sardonic twist to her voice, and she opts not to look away. Hell, maybe it'll make him uncomfortable. She doesn't mind pressing a point for the moment if it gets her left alone in the long run, and what concept would be more horrifying? (She can think of a few, but no, no, her mind doesn't want to linger there.) It's not like it's a bluff he's going to call. ]
You said it yourself right now, didn't you? We could all be here for another two years, for ten, for a lifetime. Plenty of time for you to figure out what makes answering your questions worth my while, Armin. You're intelligent. Sooner or later, you'll come up with something.
[ Or he won't. No skin off her nose. ]
