"it's 100,000 lower because ya old"
I'd be interested in hearing about the ones back home, if you feel like talking about it.
[ no pressure, armin. you're a kid, not a target, so he doesn't need to bully you into giving him information. ]
"you too old to run anyway."
[No bullying necessary to make Armin give information in this situation. Titans are a simple fact of life in their world. Talking about them would be like talking about the sun or the moon. It is just something that is. Which is why his voice is neutral as he speaks, like someone talking about dry old history.]
Back where I am from, Titans aren't a myth, nor are they anything close to gods. They are... [Monsters. Humans.] mysterious creatures that appeared in our world about a century ago. They roughly resemble humans, though they never quite look right. Most Titans stand anywhere between three and fifteen meters tall, though exceptions have been recorded. To be honest, there is a lot about Titans we don't know. We don't know where they come from, or why they behave as they do, or even exactly how they survive. The only thing we know for certain is that Titans have an insatiable appetite for devouring humans, despite lacking the internal organs needed to actually digest them. When they suddenly appeared a century ago, they nearly destroyed all of humankind. All except those who managed to find refuge behind the Walls.
[Except that is not true, is it? Not according to what Annie told him. According to her, humanity was still out there in large numbers. Much of what he has just told this man is completely false. And yet he repeats it. It can't be known he knows these things. Not that it would make a difference to this man, but it might get back to Jean or the others, and then Armin would have to explain how he knows what he knows.]

[ it's one word for what, in jack's mind, is quite a horrible images. being trapped behind a while by something you don't understand, that just wants you dead - well, he can relate.
except there was reasoning with omnics, ultimately, after the God Programs were destroyed. it doesn't sound like there's such hope for this kid. ]
I'm gonna be honest, that sounds pretty messed up, kid.
DON'T HURT YOUR HIP, GRANDPA
understand now why he'd rather be here?]
It's-- we keep trying to make a little progress where we can. It's what we joined the military for.
runs faster
however, he's interacted with enough child soldiers in his day to know telling them the way they were raised is wrong is a quick way to an argument, so he keeps that to himself. ]
How do you fight something like that?
[ without missiles, he means. ]
pls stop praying for grandpa. he's too powerful
We use something called the Three Dimensional Gear.
The thing about handling Titans isn't just their size, it's their rapid healing as well. Titans can survive just about any wound. They are capable of regrowing their limbs, head, anything really. The only exception is the area at the back of the nack. If the spinal cord is severed there, a Titan will die.
In order to fight Titans, you need to be off the ground. Else they will always have the advantage over you. So the military developed the gear. It essentially comes down to a system of grappling hooks powered by a gas engine. [Armin gestures a bit as he explains.] You anchor your hooks into a high enough location, then use the engine to rewind the wires so you are pulled off the ground. We use a system of belts to adjust our movements in mid-air and use a pair of blades that hook into the hand-controls of the gear to bring down the Titans.
Well, that is the theory, at least.
can't stop won't stop jack morrison
The reason it's a theory being that even that doesn't keep them from outrunning or catching you sometimes, I'm guessing.

[ jack's voice, if nothing else, sounds very curious about all this. ]

You see, most of the time Titans behave very consistently. If there are humans nearby, they will try and eat them. The bigger the group of humans, the more they will be attracted to them. In theory, if presented with two groups of humans, Titans always should go for the bigger group and ignore the smaller one. But there are also some Titans who are unlike that. They might target specific individuals. Or they might seem to be completely uninterested in humans at all unless they act in a certain way. I once saw one that slowly learned to climb trees.
It was... eye-opening.
[Terrifying and eye-opening.]

it wouldn't help armin to speculate - and the way the kid sounds, he might have already. ]
Doesn't sound like the kind of things you want learning how to climb, that's for damn sure.
