When one is lifelong spy who lives by 'knowledge or death' details become incredibly important. But if the man has no further details to offer about the road, Thace will happily focus on what he is willing to offer details.

"Do these Pokemon engage in this challenge willingly?" That, for Thace, is a very important question. He even allows his concern to bleed into his tone and expression about it.

The Soldier just figured that much could be gotten from observation. Culture is the weirder thing to deal with, around here, at least for him. "Some of them. A lot of them, actually." He sounds kind of baffled by the tendency. "Pokemon accept humans bossing them around so they can do these fight things more safely. I guess. They don't communicate very well." His metal hand comes up to ruffle Grace's fur, and she hums at him, horn vibrating slightly.

Thace is still concerned, and makes a slight expression of distaste at 'bossing them around' but poses his next question thoughtfully. "Do they benefit from these fights? Is it considered acceptable to form an equal partnership rather than a strict hierarchy?"

The plates in the Soldier's metal arm ripple through a calibration loop. "Most of us consider it a partnership, yes. I don't know about benefit. But some of them really like it. And they do get stronger, and stronger pokemon make stronger children, with more abilities. So. Maybe." He pushes up from the tree, so they're talking at the same level now, standing. "I don't like it much. But my pokemon think I'm a little weird that way."

"Absol," Grace says, but she sounds fond.

"As long as they aren't forced. I've been a soldier too long to like the idea of fighting as a way of life, but I do have to admit that I enjoy the occasional spar against a trusted companion."

He pulls out a ball, speaking softly to it. "I suppose that's why you went back in this?"

Out pops a Honedge who immediately wraps it's tassel around Thace's arm. "Honedge!"

That sounds affirmative.

"Apparently it's like. Taking a nap? In there?" the Soldier says with a helpless little shrug. "My Espurr in particular seems to get overwhelmed easily, so she spends a lot of time in hers." And the Rockruff spends time in hers because otherwise she exhausts everyone.... "One of the older trainer's pokemon learned how to write. That's what she wrote for me. 'Like snoozing'."

The Honedge waves its tassel in an approximation of a nod at the Soldier's description.

Thace relaxes slightly and addresses the Pokemon. "Please indicate yes," he nods, "or no," he shakes his head, "did you willingly choose to partner with a trainer and go into the balls?"

The Honedge nods with its tassel again and then hugs Thace. Thace doesn't look entirely comfortable with the answer or the hug but he places his palm on the tassel anyway, and looks towards Grace.

Grace inclines her head smoothly and gravely in answer.

After a beat, the Soldier says, sounding subdued, "As soon as I learned they're a smart as anyone else, and understand English, I gave her the option to leave. Maybe find someone better. She acted like I'd offended her."

"Absol," she agrees, quellingly. No more talk of that, thank you.
