Thace doesn't show any recognition at all at 'eighth grade' but understanding leaks in at her continued explanation. "I'm not sure what the equivalent would be in the education system I grew up in, but congratulations."

It sounds like it's probably a milestone, at least. Thace continues on immediately while looking at the balls he was given. It's said softly, as if to himself. "Knowledge or death..."

And out of the second ball comes a sword, to Thace's evident surprise.

"Honedge!"

"That seems kind of morbid," the girl says, but then she takes a jump back when the sword comes out. "Oh my lord!" she cries out. "Did that sword just talk? Is your sword alive? Oh my lord."

When he recognizes a sword-shape, but before his brain catches up that it's not his sword, Thace starts reaching out. He stops when the differences make themselves plain, but the Honedge is having none of that. The tassel wraps around Thace's forearm and it bumps against his hand like an affectionate cat.

"Hon~ Honedge!" It certainly sounds happy and affectionate.

Thace is busy staring at the living sword, looking a bit like someone who was expecting a housecat, but encountered a tiger.

"It seems so," he finally says, dryly.

The Earthling girl is still staring at it in abrupt confusion. "Well," she says finally. "At least it's pretty cool looking. I'd like to paint it someday... once I get some art supplies. I lost all of mine when I woke up here."

"I lost all of my possessions as well. A side-effect of arrival, perhaps." That might explain why Thace is in what appears to be a karate gi and barefoot. He is still staring at the Pokemon.

"You seem happy, but how true is that appearance? The book mentioned something about capture." And when he says that, Thace's expression darkens with worry and reluctance

The little paintbrush canine gives a broad shrug. The Earthling girl looks at her and then back at Thace.

"You'd tell me if you were unhappy, right?" she asks Ashley. At this Ashley nods.

"Don't worry," the girl tells Thace. "I'll take care of her. I'm a professional babysitter, after all."

"Professional babysitter?"

Thace is not at all sure if his initial gauge of the meaning is at all correct. "A creche worker?"

Meanwhile, Thace is absently guiding the Honedge so that it's hugging him over the shoulder rather than wound around his arm.

"I guess," she says. "I'm not sure what a creche is supposed to be. But I'm Claudia Kishi. What's your name?"

"The creche is a system of facilities where infants and children too young for fundamental schooling are raised." Thace says that completely matter of fact.

Thace just nods at the introduction. "I'm Thace."

"Oh!" Claudia says. "Like a daycare. They have one of those here. I'm going to go there and see if they'll let me have a part-time summer job. They might--they let me and my friends be counselors-in-training at summer camp, after all. And I bet I could pass for sixteen. I've done it before, with the right hair and make-up."

"Sixteen?" By the subtle widening of Thace's eyes, he was not expecting that. "Is that a normal age to begin working for Earthlings?"

"For most job? You can babysit and do stuff for your parents before then, I think. And do chores for people." Then she blinks. "Wait. Earthlings? Are you an alien?" He doesn't look like an alien, just a regular grown-up.

"How quickly do Earthlings mature?" Thace asks that first and then focuses on the question. "That depends on your point of view, but I am a different species. Or I was until I arrived here. Earthling bodies and senses are... different than I would have guessed."

"I mean, I think I'm super mature for my age," Claudia says. She's been wearing a bra for two whole years, after all! She thinks. Sometimes it seems like she'd been thirteen a lot longer than she should have been.

"But, um, we're adults at eighteen? And I'm fourteen." Or. Well. She was going to be. Oh man, if she doesn't get home before tomorrow, she'll be stuck having her birthday here.

"So you were an alien before," she guesses shrewdly, "and something weird put you in a human body. Does that mean you used to be little and bald and spindly, with big eyes and no nose?"

That's an opinion shared by so many youngsters, and she is young, even if she's nearly adult by the standards of her species. Cadets just starting the mandatory military service are over the age of majority too, after all. Thace nods. "Thank you; that gives me a better reference for comparative age."

The question makes him crack a smile though. "Different species. I was taller, furred, and purple before."

Thace looks at his hands and then runs his fingertips through his hair on top of his head. "I miss my ears and claws already."

Oh wow. Claudia's pretty much imagining a purple Chewbacca right now, but in her defense, it's only been a couple years since she saw Return of the Jedi.

"Could you talk like this?" she asks. "Or did you just growl?"

"I'm speaking in Galran now, as far as I'm aware," Thace says with an eyebrow raised, "just some of the words take more effort than they used to. Based on that, as a Galra I was capable of a much wider range of vocalizations compared to Earthlings."

"No you're not," Claudia argues. "You're speaking in English! Just like I am!"

"Given that I don't know that language, I don't know how I can be. Translators are almost universal among species that have achieved interstellar travel, but given the changes to my body, I can't say if mine has been left intact."

After a thoughtful pause, "It's also possible that new translators were inserted by whatever transported us here, I suppose."

Claudia winces. "What do you mean? You don't think they stuck-- I don't know? Computer chips in us? Little magic fish in our ears? Are we cybers now?"

Cyborg, Claudia. The word you're looking for is cyborg.

"A translator isn't enough to qualify as cybernetic prosthetic or enhancement, but they are usually technology rather than magic."

The fact that he says that so casually, and adds the usually, is probably a sign that Thace at least believes magic is real and isn't discounting the magic fish option.

"I suspect we'd feel it if a living creature were inserted into our ear canals though. A microchip is more likely."

"Or a microfish," Claudia jokes. "Anyway, I'm bad at science, but I do know that when you get sick, sometimes it's because there's little germs that are making you sick. Do you think it could be magic germs instead? They're sort of alive."

Is that a twitch of a smile? Yes, but blink and miss it entirely. "That's true. Magic nano-particles are a possibility, although I don't know of any existing personally."

Thace thinks nanotech is more likely but it seems to bother her a bit so, he'll play along.

"What's a nano party cure?" Claudia asks, wrinkling her nose. That sounds like a Janine thing.

It takes Thace a moment to figure out what she's asking about in particular. So he patiently explains, "In this case it means a very small piece of magic that can only be... hm, viewed through a powerful microscope."

Quintessence is visible; it tracks.
