"Knew it," Catra says, allowing herself a small, self-satisfied smile at the confirmation that she's getting the hang of some small portion of the local strangeness. "If you were a local, you would've challenged me for the ice cream."

She cocks her head slightly as she considers the place names. Stoneybrook sounds like it could be just another small village somewhere in Etheria. Connecticut, on the other hand, just sounds weird.

"Is Connecticut your planet?"

Claudia shakes her head. "My planet's called Earth. Connecticut's just a state. And-- I guess I could have, but it's easier to ask?" She shrugs. "There's a lot of really little kids here, anyway. Me and Ashley have been taking their challenges, but we mostly just throw the matches. Ashley's learned some pretty cool moves though, didn't you, Ashley?"

The paintbrush dog nods.

"Why?" She takes another bite of ice cream, and gestures with her spoon towards a nearby knot of young trainers. "They're the average age for cadets, and the matches are non-lethal. No one even gets hurt that badly. Breeze got knocked out once, and she was fine after a night's sleep."

The little unicorn blows out a snuffling breath, and manages to look almost petulant at the reminder of her defeat - or at least as petulant as a pastel unicorn with a smudge of chocolate ice cream on its nose can.

Claudia thinks about this. "I dunno," she admits. "It just-- kinda felt like it was bullying? Just because I'm so much older than them. But then again, they're pretty good at this battling thing. Sometimes I didn't even have to throw the matches. They beat me fair and square. Even though they're kindergartners."

Catra's not at all familiar with the term 'kindergartners', but infers from context that it's probably something roughly approximating 'first year cadets'.

"They've probably been training since they could walk," she says. "Not just for a couple days. So they have an advantage to offset their age."

Claudia stares at her. "Are you sure?" she asks. "Because that-- it doesn't sound right. I mean. Shouldn't kids have time to be kids first?"

Catra stares back, her expression blank. After a moment, she replies warily, "That is being a kid."

Please forgive her, her upbringing was horrible, and the only child she's ever really had much contact with outside the Horde is a preteen magical powerhouse who's terrifyingly comfortable with violence.

Oh no. Claudia's suddenly looking not only confused, but actually pretty uncomfortable.

"That's not how it works where I come from," she says, biting her lip a little. "Not at all. Most little kids don't... I mean. There's athletes and stuff, but I think most of them wait until they're a little bigger than since they can walk to train in anything. Even Jessi didn't start learning ballet until she was four."
