"No, no, that makes sense," Steven says. His own body language is kind of uncomfortable as well. Fuck, this is awkward.

"About that weird weekend," Steven says. "I, uh. Have the vague impression I hassled you at one point about Charley? The whole shotgun talk. Not that I have one," he adds, an almost imperceptible note of disappointment in his voice. "Anyway, uh, given that she's not here right now or at least I'd hope she'd contact me if she was-- Well. Maybe we can start over? I have the distinct impression I was mostly trying to hassle you that way because I couldn't give 'Solus'--" (He does little air quotes for the name.) "--trouble without him using his phenomenal cosmic powers to probably kill me."

It certainly is awkward.

And he can hear that disappointment about the shotgun in your voice, Steven, although given that he knows Steven the Elder, and has in fact had the latter point a gun at his face before, Shinobu isn't surprised by it. "I can't see her not contacting you if she was here," he agrees. "And... yes, you did hassle me a bit, but..." He shrugs again. It hadn't exactly endeared Steven the Younger to him, but he's has worse.

Look, you were breaking into his apartment and he hadn't invoked any of his contracts of Shade and Spirit to know that his baby sister's ghost was making you do it for the sake of anime. What was Future Steven supposed to do?

"Right, well. I'm sorry about that. Do you know where you're staying while you're in town? I know they've got free beds at most pokecenters."

And Shinobu understands that and even sympathizes to an extent, but that doesn't mean he enjoyed the experience.

"I've mostly been staying at the PokeCenters." Though he hasn't been by the one here yet.

"Good," Steven says, with relief. He wouldn't have to give him money for an inn or anything.

"So, uh, how's Charley been doing these last few weeks? I mean, assuming that the space llama god didn't just scoop you up immediately after you got home."

It's a good thing Shinobu has an excellent poker face; otherwise he might have rolled his eyes at Steven's relief.

"It's actually been closer to a year, for us. She's doing well, though. Keeping busy between the living and dead realms." Getting them to go to France to steal certain medieval artifacts for the purpose of summoning certain French medieval ghosts. The usual.

Look, he's not rich. His boyfriend is. He doesn't want Jack to get the wrong idea about why he's charging all these hotel rooms to his card.

"Oh Jesus, right, the space llama has no respect for the timeline. But. Well. I'm glad she's doing well."

There is that.

"If she'd known I was coming here, she probably would have told me to say hi." Well, assuming she remembered any of this; given that Shinobu hadn't and he usually has perfect recall, she might not.

Steven smiles fondly. "She probably would." After a moment he adds, a touch awkwardly, "Have you been doing well too?"

Well, at least he's not the only one feeling awkward here. "Reasonably well, yes."

"And your, ah, grandfather?" Steven still can't get over that the literal oldest person in San Diego--who he'd even interviewed back when he was still a reporter--was actually a damn fetch all along.

"Still the oldest person in San Diego," Shinobu says dryly. "Because he's made of such strong stuff and all."

"Of course," Steven says, just as dryly. "I never knew why he looked so close to laughing when he said that before."
