[Steven blinks. Yeah, no, he looks like Osomatsu, but that's definitely a different voice.]

Oh! Right. One of his five identical brothers. I remember him mentioning you guys to Tyler. I just hadn't expected any of you to show up.

Karamatsu, then. Pleased to meet you. I'm Steven Durante. I work here in Goldenrod. Sorry I thought you were Osomatsu, but he really wasn't kidding about the identical sextuplets thing, wow.

[Honestly, Steven's just glad he didn't remind the guy to put his purchases on his company card (i.e. creatively expense it to Team Rocket) like he'd been about to.]

[ah... someone who knows Osomatsu, for real! Karamatsu's chest tightens, but he looks cool and composed outwardly, even smirking]

Me and my friends, yeah. We met him on the road and gave him a ride to the city. And a couple eggs, since Lydia and I had an excess. Actually, I think she still does, if you're looking for some to increase your breeding pool.

[He makes a note to text Osomatsu with the details of that cover story in a sec.]

[a pause... it was just as Osomatsu had said! people were giving him pokémon... again, Karamatsu's stomach twists]

O-oh... That is... incredibly kind of you. But I only just arrived. I am still, uh... learning...

I mean, some people learn by doing? But if you're looking for someone who can teach you more about breeding, I know a few people already. Armin especially has been here a long while and is always happy to tell people things.

[Don't worry, Armin's not a Rocket! He, uh, kind of hates Team Rocket, which makes the fact that three of his friends are secretly on the Team and two of them helped steal his Lapras very awkward.]

I'm not a Breeder myself [he smirks a little at the pun, even though Karamatsu isn't likely to know enough old gay slang to know there even was one] but I've picked up a few things from Armin and Dr Tennenbaum and the occasional mystery egg at home. What do you have to work with so far in terms of Pokemon?

[oh, here we go. he almost wants to show off again, but they are in the department store, and there isn't water for his Pokémon]

Ah! R-right now, I have my Mermaid. She is... I think a Feebas, is what they are called. A fish!

[please don't make fun of him she is all he has]

[Don't worry. He's not. He's actually getting a thoughtful look on his face.]

Just her? You'll need someone else to breed her to, then. Hm. If she's a fish, then you'll want to breed her to another water Pokemon, this time a male.

Huh. I wonder if Cecil or the Joestars still have their egg sales going on? I don't mind spotting you the cash to get another fish to breed her with and we can cross our fingers that it's a male when it hatches. You can just owe me a free egg later.

Breed... her?

[oh. oh no. Karamatsu shakes his head emphatically and holds his pokéball to his chest! Mermaid is like his daughter!]

[Steven blinks, staring at him with a puzzled frown.]

Karamatsu? What do you think Pokemon Breeders do?

[itaimatsu]

I... I read the book. They are supposed to breed Pokémon. I know that much.

But... Mermaid is my partner.

[fingersandteeth]

Then it's fine if you don't want to breed her, [he says, almost gently.] That just means finding other pokemon to breed is important, Karamatsu. Or-- at least you'd want to find a Ditto, out on Route 34, so that if someone has a pokemon that can't have eggs in the normal way--like a Rotom or a Sinistea--they can bring them to you and have eggs with your Ditto.

[a Ditto? is that a powerful Pokémon? perhaps to a Breeder.

he perks up, lifting his head. this guy is so nice to him]

I... I want to help people, so I'll do whatever I can!

[fingersandteeth]

[Steven smiles. God, what a nice kid. Not really a kid, he mentally corrects himself.]

Good, [he says firmly.] I don't know all the egg groups off the top of my head, but I do know that Dittos can breed with everything. That's why every profession breeder should catch one sooner or later. But like I said, they've got them just south of the city, on Route 34. In their normal state, they kind of look like pink blobs, with little beady-eyed smiles, but they'll turn into other pokemon in a second--that's just what they do.

But, [Steven adds,] they never get the faces right. That's how you'll be able to tell that the pokemon's really a Ditto.

[itaimatsu]

[ah! advice! Karamatsu quickly pulls out the notepad from his backpack and begins to write things down.

Route 34, pink blobs, beady eyes]

I wonder... could you, perhaps, draw one? It does not have to be exact.

[he'll offer the pen and notepad to Steven]

[And he'll draw a sketchy little Ditto, then a Misdreavous and a Woobat, each with a Ditto face.]

Here. That one's the Ditto and this is what I mean by them never getting the faces right.

[this is great! it makes perfect sense now. Karamatsu lets out a sigh, looking very pleased]

Thank you! I shall keep my eyes peeled for this one.

[Ditto... it was so cute!]

Great! I hope you find one. They really are a breeder's best friend. Also, here. [And he writes down a name (Armin Arlert) and a pokegear ID number.] That's my friend Armin's number. Tell him that you're a new breeder and I recommended you ask him for advice on how to be a good one.

[wow! Karamatsu is practically beaming]

Thank you, sir! I shall remember your good deed. Today, I may just be starting out on my journey, but, someday, you shall see a new man, a stronger man!

[and... he should probably find Osomatsu again and talk... to him...]

[But... he should probably get back to concentrating on looking at ties again. So he'll give Karamatsu a little nod and go back to examining the various ties on display.]

[Karamatsu nods back, feeling energized once more. a Ditto, huh? he's going to find a great Ditto to help him continue on his journey. aaaa he cannot wait!

after another quick good bye, he's off again]
