Of course they can, all it takes is one person tryin' to out crazy the other before it spins out of control. Pretty soon it becomes a contest of who has the more special backstory. Who's gonna prove them wrong when there's people like you willing to believe 'em?

[Marlin finally stands up, shaking his head, placing his foot lightly down on Aubergine to make sure she doesn't roll off anywhere.]

Me, I'd rather tell the truth and let everyone know I'm normal so they don't think I'm out lookin' for attention. The weirder their story, the more I want them to leave me alone.

[guynapple]

Huh. You sound pretty convinced.

[So what's the point in fighting, then? Kai just shrugs as Scorbunny leans back, dangling its head while Kai holds on to its paws.]

I dunno. I guess I just don't see what reason people'd have to lie to complete strangers.

And I mean, the fire-shooting rabbit was weird enough.

[That was always Kai's best quality, never truly arguing with Marlin. As much as he'd rather be stuck in some weird fantasy land with someone, like, say Celia, he'd take Kai over a good number of people from the Valley any day.

If only for that.

May he never find out about Kai's ladykiller reputation-]

You didn't have to remind me that thing shoots fire, how does anyone get any work done with animals like THAT runnin' around?

[It's not even his fault!!!!! He just talks different and Rick doesn't like him!!! May Rick never find his chicken ass around here-]

Who knows. At least she's just a baby.

[Summer is still all flopped out, too, at this point having melted to be flat against Kai's back while he holds her feet. She's very good at entertaining herself.]

Some of these guys get really... Big.

[But who will be everyone's chicken man???]

I know.

[But unlike Kai, he doesn't sound nearly as bothered by that.]

You should want to see 'em get big, means they're bein' raised right. I don't know about you, but I'm gonna try to make mine as big and healthy as they can get.

...and that STARTS with stayin' in the pot!

[He looks down and scolds his little petilil, who probably can't hear him right now anyway.]

I'm just not ready for a giant rabbit...

[He laughs a little, though.]

You sure they're supposed to be in a pot, though? It looked like she was looking for a fight. Maybe that's why she's so bitter.

[Ah, just like her trainer..]

Yeah, now that you mention it, I'm not either.

[Stay small forever, Summer. Cause less damage.]

And this one... I don't want her fightin' until I know she's in tip top shape. I have no idea what they were feedin' Auber before I got here, and I think that has to do with her lack of strength.

[And not just because happiny happens to be one of the weakest pokemon in existence.]

But I have complete control over what goes into this little sprout. I won't have to rely on other people's strength to get me places if I have my own strong team, and that starts with the basics.

You'll finally be free to do whatever you want, too.

Hmm?

[Kai has kind of resorted to letting Summer sliiiiiiide down his back, arcing backward until he can let her flip onto her toes (to which of course sh gives an olympic dismount... before flopping against the back of Kai's legs) and questions once he's straightened out.]

Whaddya mean?

[dyinggreaser]

Huh? ...What? Did I say somethin' weird?

[He scratches his cheek a little, chuckling nervously. If he did, he has...no idea what the weird part was.]

Maybe I'm getting a little more into this than I thought I would... Forget I said anything...

[guynapple]

Nah, man, it's just--

[Kai kind of rubs the back of his neck and shakes his head.]

Nevermind.

Raising a team's part of the whole point, right?

[It's not weird to want to raise a team like Marlin suggested, right? Even if Marlin's totally got dumb reasons behind it. But more than that-]

And with all the things they can do, maybe there's a pokemon out there that can help you feel better.

[Marlin's nervous chuckling stops, a sad silence taking its place.]

I've been...looking into that...

[How couldn't he, there's so many weird pokemon out there, one is bound to be a walking miracle cure...right?]

Aubergine... I want Aubergine to get stronger... She could...

[He keeps cutting himself off, it was only a matter of time before words starting failing him again. At least he's getting better.]

Yeah?

[Kai can't help but be interested in something that might keep his buddy's health up! He squats down to give Summer a pat on the head and at the same time reaches over to pay more attention to Aubergine.

Maybe if he focuses on the pokemon instead of Marlin, his words'll come back to him.]

Got some sorta special move?

[Marlin can totally see what Kai's trying to do, and he just doesn't get it. Why is he putting in so much effort just to make him comfortable? It's not like he hasn't noticed, they've only been traveling together since New Bark, Kai's managed to learn all of Marlin's quirks and how to defuse them so easily.

And that's what drives him crazy! That means Kai's been paying attention to him, and that is simply something he isn't used to.]

...The eggs! [He finally blurts out after awkwardly watching Kai play with his baby pokemon in silence.] That rock I got her...they carry it around to imitate the adults, I guess they carry eggs...and those eggs...they're supposed to be chock full of nutrients.

[guynapple]

Is that right?

[Giving Aubergine a pat on the head, Kai doesn't actually seem all that bothered. It's not even forced, it just makes sense. All of these things lay eggs, right? Even stuff that's not supposed to.]

That's pretty wild. I guess it's kind of got that fat little fluffball vibe like a chicken. A superpowered egg-laying chicken...

[dyinggreaser]

[...Now Marlin can't stop imagining Aubergine with a little beak and wings. C-Cute...]

I.... I guess...

[Nope, can't shake that mental image, Marlin starts to scratch his cheek in hopes it'd stop him from blushing. Can't have people thinking he's SOFT. He still doesn't understand why HE got the monster that doesn't look like...anything, but beakless chicken almost makes sense.]

But I'm not gonna get those eggs if she doesn't win any fights.

[guynapple]

Iiii guess it wouldn't hurt for the both of us to get some more training in, actually.

[Summer is uh. Also pretty weak for all the traveling they've been doing.]

Maybe if we put 'em all up against each other, they can boost each other up a little bit.
