It is strange. The weaknesses and advantages themselves do not always make sense, either. Some hinging entirely on idioms or metaphors, and the laws of nature scarcely abide by such whence I hail.

So then, by your measure, something merely needs to be large and long of both neck and tail to be considered a dragon? I daresay that is a classification of even lesser sense than aught this world has decided.

The grass typing was never being questioned, by the by.

Then would not the opposite make sense as well? That, by your logic, dragon traits can manifest in ways otherwise not obvious, nor truly draconic at all, as in the Exeggutor's case, while still being a dragon. Yet, its traits could solely be explained by being grass type, really. Viewed thus: Charizard by all means makes sense.

After all, if your parameter for what is or is not a dragon allows for that which looks naught like the creatures, then should you not likewise accept those that bear resemblence need not be classified as such?

As for the idioms, psychic types are effective against and resistant to poison types. Are you familiar with the idiom "mind over matter"?

Do not misunderstand me, I am in agreement with you. I would much sooner classify a Charizard as a dragon than an overgrown tree with three heads, but this world was not built with sense in mind. Honestly, this half-formed world is depressing and disgraceful, not to mention embarrassing. A stalwart example of the limitations when but a single mind takes on a project as massive as this.

But who am I to criticize this world's god, hm?

Speaking of, I am likewise in agreement. Similarly, I see not why telekinesis should more thoroughly devastate a creature of venomous persuasion than aught else, and yet here we are. I have also surmised that the weaknesses that psychic types are burdened with are the results of common fears, than aught else. Dark, ghost, and bug types specifically.

Bug types are likewise an oddity. Like dragons, why do they have a more biological typing versus those that skew more elemental? Why is there not a canine type, a feline type, and so forth? Or even a mere beast type?

This world runs on arbitrary and malformed decisions, and it direly needed a consultant ere such folly was ever set in stone.

Word of warning.

Apparently the proper response to the monks at Sprout Tower talking about the giant Bellsprout is not "lemme fight it".

Seems a little hypocritical given how fighty the rest of this place is, if you ask me.

Like if you don't wanna have to ban people from your fancy tower maybe don't tell them you've got a giant monster as the centerpiece.

Faulkner, more like Failkner, amirite?

[This is. A very windy broadcast.]

[It's a little hard to tell, between the fast-moving background, the awkward angle, and Shard's own wildly whipping hair, but this looks to be an in-flight video.]

Is this easy or am I just amazing? Trick question, it's both. Right, Streaks?

[Even over the wind, the screeching response of a Skarmory sounds dubious at best.]

Look, I bet I can go hands free-

[And as the camera shifts- and then turns into a spinning tumble- that "ee" extends well beyond what would be allowed by any kind of dignity.]

[Shard's gear takes a mercifully short trip down through heavy foliage before landing sharply at an odd angle, displaying what would normally be a very nice image of fallen Autumn leaves.]

[The effect is rather ruined by the loud series of thumps and snapping branches offscreen, terminated by a loud impact and pained wheezing.]

...I'm okay! Ow.

[After another few moments there's a sound of shuffling through dried leaves, and the feed clicks off.]

[Among the crowd of people watching the juggler is one actual preteen girl, standing with her hand on top of the head of her Hoothoot. Her face is impassive, but her eyes are sharp, and she catches sight of the Meowth snatching out of someone's pocket.

[She doesn't make a scene about it, but she does walk right up to the naughty pokemon and look it unflinchingly in the eye.]

You shouldn't steal.

Kayo Hinazuki | Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (Erased)

[personal profile] pretendingto 2020-10-05 05:26 am (UTC)(link)

Network; video

[The video opens on New Bark Town, and the camera pans down to a Hoothoot, standing there looking pleased with itself, head cocked slightly to the side as it regards whoever must be filming. There is a soft, low-timbre girl's voice.]

Can someone tell me what kind of owl this is? I have never seen one like this before. Also it won't stop following me around.

Action; Azalea Town

Just outside of town, near the slowpoke well, Kayo has taken a seat on a bench meant for travelers to rest on. A slowpoke is making its painstaking way toward her, and she's watching it and crocheting something alternately.

When at last the pokemon gets within range, and slowly sits down on its rump, a tiny little smile forms on her face. "You're very stupid." She says in a slightly indulgent tone. "Pooooooke?" The pokemon responds.

That little guy is called a Hoothoot! And it's probably following you around because it wants to be your friend.

[Hunk knows how silly the name sounds, and he's long since made peace with that. As for the explanation, though, well, it makes about as much sense as anything else he might have come up with.]

"They're called Slowpokes," another girl tells her, dressed in a baggy sweater (patterned like an Azumarill's belly) and leggings. She looks like she's about old enough to be going to high school. "Most of them live in that well there."

[personal profile] pretendingto 2020-10-05 06:02 am (UTC)(link)

[The video starts back up again with Kayo's face in frame, looking distinctly unimpressed.]

Hoot.... hoot?

[You're fucking with her, right? Meanwhile, the pokemon in question "hoooo!"s cheerfully off screen and Kayo's eyes scan over to look at it.]

You have a stupid name, [She tells it.] I'm not calling you that.

pretendingto: (normal kid)

[personal profile] pretendingto 2020-10-05 06:04 am (UTC)(link)

Kayo blinks at the girl, clearly thinking that name hits the nail a bit too on the head. "So they live in the water." She turns to look back at the slowpoke, tilting her head. It... kind of looks aquatic? Maybe?

spacebolin: (ya don't say)

[personal profile] spacebolin 2020-10-05 06:27 am (UTC)(link)

[personal profile] pretendingto 2020-10-05 06:31 am (UTC)(link)

[She is a snarky child. His question is considered, Kayo peering closely at the round owl pokemon for a moment.]

Fukuro. [She decides. After the Ural Owls she's seen back home.

Hoothoot decides it likes this, and "oooo"s happily, hopping in closer and jostling the camera.]

Oh, I am. Creating and battling creatures is far
from a practice unique to this reality. As for the one responsible, well do I know of him--or it--but nary have I beheld the scoundrel. Only in passing from others did I come to learn of such information.

Now, if I were the marionettist of this mummery, I would absolutely must needs start from the ground up. Limiting to dual-types is far too simplistic to simulate the complexities of life in any way believable. If you wish to fool your captives, you must put forth equivalent effort to cement the suspension of disbelief. Otherwise you risk far too much skepticism.

With that said, I would have it all categorized into regnum, kindred, genus, species, and monster. However, what would truly be relevant would to the battling aspects would be elemental affinity (ice, water, wind, lightning, fire, earth, light, darkness), as well as their kindred and genus.

You see, the absurd structure in place for these creatures robs nature of its very laws and sense--that these limited and oft inaccurate typings barely make mock of what should be is embarrassing at best, insulting at worst. Nay, at the very least a creature should have three crucial aspects to claim affinity to, but little should it be so mind numbingly shallow.

Let us take Beedrill for example. By the system in place, this insectoid is typed as Bug/Poison. Yet, it shares aspects with flying types. Despite this, it gains no advantages nor disadvantages in relation to such a reality. In the classification I would assign, it would fall under the kindred vilekin for being an insect, then it would fall under the genus giant hornet. Such classification would cover and afford it the necessary advantages of being an airborne insectoid, as well as covering the venomous properties such a creature has, but it would nary stop there.

Combined with this would be the elemental affinity, which one might deem an aerial creature such as it wind aspected. Thus, Beedrill would be typed as vilekin, giant hornet, and wind aspect. There are roughly twelve kindred groups, and each has an advantage, or disadvantage, against another, yet elemental affinity could turn prey into predator, and so forth. Even so, technically speaking, there are overlaps in kindreds, though certain affinities are primary, and others secondary.

With Beedrill being a creature both insectoid and airborne, it could easily fall under the kindreds of vilekin and cloudkin, though a stronger affinity towards the former over the latter. Even this serves as a gross simplification of what would be appropriate classification, for the laws of nature are far from simple, and this world is but a crude, imperfect mock of it.

I think I like that better than Hoothoot.

[There's a long moment where Kayo has to deal with Fukuro getting in the way of her filming, and eventually he settles down by getting headpats. When her face comes back into screen, Kayo looks put-upon but slightly amused, and her hand on top of Fukuro's head is visible.]

This place is weird. Why would that woman pretend to be my mom? Where's my grandma?

[Clearly you have all the answers.]

pretendingto: (gift)

[personal profile] pretendingto 2020-10-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)

"With their... tails." Kayo looks unconvinced, her eyes trained on the smooth tail draped gently around the seated slowpoke. It stares back at her in kind.

"What fish are in the well?" Usually wells are just for... water, right? You fish in a pond, river, or lake, not in a well. This place is weird.
