I... certainly admired you in our school days. And the other Lions as well but... The Golden Deer represent the best the Alliance had to offer. How could I step away from that?

Or Claude. [He's absolutely not blushing in the slightest, it's your imagination Byleth.]

I didn't see you again until... well. The Bridge of Myrrdin. Father sent me to... demanded I... defend the bridge against... I didn't know you were alive! I had little choice in the matter and as soon as I realized I tried to stand down. You assured me you'd get me back to Derdriu and Claude but Ferdinand... he wouldn't listen and then- That godawful woman.

[He shakes his head, grimacing at the memory, one hand coming up to rub at the lingering ache where his shoulder had been all but torn to pieces.]

I wasn't expecting to see anyone again, Professor.

Oh Lorenz. I'm so sorry. That's horrible. I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you.

[ He's determined now though... ]

I will gladly look after you here though. There is no war and no fighting here. I think you will find it to be quite relaxing as I have. Please let me know if there is anything at all that I can do to help, or assist you in feeling more at ease.

No war... that is a relief but... it certainly seems that a lot of people are quite eager to fight. It is a bit disconcerting.

[He's not so sure about this pokémon battle thing.]

Ah, the fights here seem to be more like friendly sparring matches from what I have observed. As such- no bodily harm as come to me or anyone thus far in my time here. I can assure you, you are indeed safe.

I will see to it myself that you are comfortable here.

Friendly sparring matches in which we're expected to allow... pets? to be harmed instead of ourselves?

[He frowns, lips pressed in a hard line of disapproval. Come on Byleth with how soft he has always been for his horse how do you expect him to let an already chipped teacup fight for him.]

I appreciate the assurance, Professor, I do. But please bear in mind it is not your responsibility to see to everyone's safety and comfort either. You are a stranger in this land just as much as anyone else.

Trust me, I had the same reservations. It's something Pokemon actually take part in regardless of human intervention. They appear to treat it much like a sport or competition amongst themselves.

They are far smarter than the animals back home. Many seem to be able to fully understand human speech.

[ The gentle admonishment earns a resigned sigh. ]

I realize that, but I enjoy looking after everyone. Once everyone left after the war, despite having nothing but busy days, I felt bereft. My calling is to watch over you.

[He has every intention of further addressing the concerns of pokémon battle but then Byleth goes and talks about his calling and Lorenz just... looks so touched and a little bit heartbroken at the same time.]

[Which is all he can get out without getting overly emotional. Again.
