I would guess that this is less for survival and more due to simple good nature. What little that is worth. [ He turns the Inkay around so he can look into its eyes for a moment.
....It just beams at him and gently plaps his forehead with a tentacle. He sighs again, his frown softening ever so slightly. ]

[ But no walled towns, no fear of sending even children on the road with nothing but a pet. No one even is carrying weapons or armor, though the omnipresence of magical animals might help. ]

For all Kimmuriel's griping he's hesitant to actually try and cause the creature true discomfort in an attempt to discipline it properly. He's already growing fond of it, despite himself. Nothing in the entire world has given him this much innocent trust, ever. ]
I find myself hoping that it displays less friendliness around an opponent willing to harm it. [ Which, given his less than impressed tone, he seems very displeased about. He doesn't care for this uncertainty shit. ]

[ Which is weird. Outside of domesticated animals, sensible creatures treated humanoids as potential threats unless they were large and/or hungry enough to decide it was worth hunting one.
[Also weird that the humans here are so very peaceable. Enough that Ilphyl can just about manage a walking stick and a utility knife without being considered a serious danger to society.]
