Astrid/the Operator | Warframe

It was... odd to battle using a true proxy. Astrid possessed the Warframes, she didn't give them verbal orders, so adjusting to little creatures felt pretty unnatural.

At least the little creatures seemed to enjoy fighting. It was a partnership, and it came naturally to them. Astrid was less of a commander and more of a navigator, steering these deceptively powerful monsters like one might steer a ship. One couldn't control the sea, but one could influence where it took them.

And so it was Astrid found herself trotting after her Cubone as it scampered up to what appeared to be a fellow trainer.

"Looks like Cambria wants to scrap, huh?" The Cubone hoisted her bone and waved it, bouncing on the tips of her toes.

[As the video flickered to life, it spun a little bit before showing the face of a teen; she'd had to take a minute to orient the picture.]

Kinda primitive, isn't it?

[She was speaking quietly, to a Porygon that was hovering up by her head. The Porygon bleeped, and she turned her attention rapidly back to the screen.]

Uh, sorry. I was just wondering, have any of you figured out how to send messages back home? I... my brother will be worried. I can't let... he'll be worried. I want him to know I'm okay, haven't been kidnapped again, all that.

Funnily enough, the creature that Cambria is scampering right up to happens to look rather similar - in form if nothing else. Sure, the body is darker, and a little longer, a little thinner, but the skull helmet? The shape of the tail? The bone that's held in one hand? Those are all rather similar characteristics to the little Cubone.

Dimitri glances up at the approach, standing besides her as the two of them have been inspecting a local map. "Oh- so it appears they do. May I ask how much experience she has? Hafren is not the highest leveled of my companions, but she has been working on it..."

Hafren just tilts her head, dead silent as she inspects the young Cubone.

"She's still learning... what do they call it?" Astrid fished out her Pokedex and fiddled with it. "Oh, levels. Kind of a weird way to measure strength, huh?" She gestured to the screen. "This thingy says she's level fifteen. Is that okay?"

"Then she may be a little out of her depth," Dimitri admits, reaching down to lightly stroke Hafren's helmet. In turn, Hafren seems to reach out with her bone club to lightly rub it against Cambria's own helmet. Bond...ing...? It's hard to say. Hafren is still making zero noise, besides the gentle sound of her club.

"I have others who would be more suitable partners, but... Maybe Cambria simply wants to see the skills of her kin?" Especially since Alolan Marowak are not particularly common, from what Dimitri has seen.

It's hard to discern any kind of expression from a Cubone, but she was bouncing on her toes lightly and chirping. Astrid figured it was a good sign.

"Maybe they can spar a little bit, or you can take out someone closer to her level? If you want. I'm not your boss."

She held out her hand to shake. "Astrid, by the way."

"Ha, well, I'm sure she could help give her tips, if nothing else." While Dimitri reaches for his belt, his other hands goes out to give her hand a careful shake. Even when his rational brain knows that he won't shatter hands with a simple shake, sometimes he still defaults to caution when he's not thinking too hard on the matter.

"But I do have a companion who could work out well enough." And with that, a flash of light from one pokeball forms into a little Jigglypuff, who looks up with his large eyes and tweets a bit. Without even waiting a bit, he's already wobbling over to the two bone Pokemon.

...If he bounces, he might get carried off by the wind, so best not to do that right now.

Dimitri gestures to the pair, smiling fondly. "Hafren is my Marowak, and that right there would be Clíodhna. He's been taking to battling well, but he's still young and learning."

[Radley regards the newcomer with sympathy.]

I'm sorry, there isn't currently a way to do that. All I can tell you is that apparently some people have left and come back, and they say time is stopped while we're here. So ... at least no one is agonizing over us being missing. Apparently we go back to the same place in time when we left.

Damn... at least he won't miss me.

[The Porygon nudged her under her chin, a motion that would probably be more comfortable if the physical manifestation of its body didn't have the texture of hard plastic. Either way, she gave it an affectionate pet.]

And this place isn't connected to the void at all? I can't feel it, which... I forgot what it was like, to just be a person.

Yeah ... that's one comforting thing.

[He looks confused.]

The void? You mean the general dimensional rift or something else?

[Astrid shook her head.]

Nah, the rift is the veil. The void itself... it's hard to explain. The laws of physics get wonky, and you can use it to travel crazy distances. It may be sentient, and I think it's where all potential timelines sit until they occur. An infinity type space. Maybe?

... Wow. That's wild.

Haven't you been? Kidnapped. [This whole situation seems pretty abductiony to Vierna, after all. At least, she hadn't asked to be here and she certainly hadn't asked to be turned into a human.]

[Astrid opened her mouth, paused, and closed it after a moment of consideration.]

Fair enough, I guess. This go-round is far less painful, at least.

You have experience with being taken places against your will, then. [Her tone was dry and not particularly sympathetic... although she softened a little, awkwardly, as she went on.] I'm sure your brother will manage. Most males are more capable than people assume.
