Ah, exactly what I'm good at: avoiding attention.

[ He snorts. It's...a bit of a challenge to avoid being spotted, but maybe he'll risk the grass.

But he needs to...talk. To Marik. Oh boy. What to talk about...how do normal people handle these things...

Oh. The answer seems obvious now. ]

Who's your Pokémon?

I know. I'm sure that's a difficult concept for you.

[Says the idiot child that enjoys monologuing during duels.

Marik reaches up to pat his Yamask on the head.]

His name is Chenzira. He's a Yamask.

[The Pokémon bows his head in greeting or as best one can while being slumped over. Marik's shoulder is his favorite spot that he can just kind of flop and drape off of.]

And yours?

This is Mizuchi. She spits ink when she's not happy.

[Mizuchi seems to realize she's being addressed and makes a whistling noise in return. Hello!]

I'm told all the dragons are in hard to reach places, so we have a while to go. But she'll be a force to be reckoned with soon.

[He rewards her with another berry. She might be spoiled.]

[It's okay. Marik babies Chenzira. Must protect at all cost.

Kaiba gets to see a very rare thing: Marik gives Mizuchi a sincere, gentle smile.]

... Heh. That seems perfect match for you.

[He looks at his Yamask for a moment. Of course Kaiba would go towards dragon-types.]

I'm not surprised. I haven't heard anything on dragon types so I can't help you there. You've probably noticed the the similarities between Pokémon and Duel Monsters though?

[ Mizuchi has made more friends! She makes a happy burbling noise at them. ]

Right, but I can't buy my way to a top deck. And we have to keep living creatures alive.

I've had questions about whether they want to battle...but she always seems proud when she gets stronger.

[Marik chuckles softly at the display. She's cute. It's nice to see she's friendly. Even Chenzira manages a shy smile.]

Oh no, you have to win through hard work and consideration. How ever will you survive.

[He shakes his head.]

Not every Pokémon wants to battle. Just be aware of that. Chenzira's capable but he really doesn't enjoy it. I've actually managed to teach him how to play Duel Monsters so he understands strategies and the like now. It's helped him with his confidence too. I don't force him to battle unless he's feeling up to it.

I'm glad Mizuchi enjoys it though.

You taught a Pokémon to duel.

[ It's said in flat disbelief. He lifts a brow---how did he not think of that? ]

Is there any way to get him his own deck?

They can learn to read and speak too from what I've been told.

[Marik looks smug as he says that. Bastard.]

As for a deck of his own, I'm afraid not. I've only got my deck on me so I just split it to 20 and 20 cards so we can have miniature duels.

There are some others here that have they decks with them too. They're not from our time though.

I'll have to train Mizuchi so she can duel him.

[ Seto flexes his fingers and looks up at the sky a moment, then back down. ]

Are they all from Domino's future, then?

Sounds like a plan to me.

[Chenzira perks up again, looking up at Marik before returning his attention to Mizuchi. She seems like she'll be more fun than Layla. But Layla's disinterested in everything.]

Most seem to be. There's some girl with glasses and biker named Radley that are from 2027. Another is from... 2014, if I remember correctly.

The changes to the game sound idiotic.

Mm, I talked to Radley. He seemed surprised to see me.

[ Seto's all ears. So's Mizuchi, if her partner really wants her to learn this! ]

He knew about me too. Same with the girl with glasses. I'm known for being 3rd place winner in Battle City but that's it. Thank the Gods.

[He scratches at his hair in frustration.]

There's Monsters now that are both a monster and a spell or trap card, depending on which... "pendulum" zone it lands in. Or something.

It's become overly complicated.

[ Third...Seto seethes. Then that means Jonouchi is second and he's fourth? Unacceptable. He'll have to duel Marik to reclaim his honor as soon as possible, but he sees the value in training his Pokémon's minds too.

He purses his lips, exhales---then back to the changes. ]

I'm sure I could understand it given an updated rulebook, but I likely can't compete without an updated deck. We could duel each other until I figure out how to rip a hole in spacetime and summon future cards.

[ That might not be an idle threat. ]

[Marik notices the shift in attitude but decides not to press it.

Ah, Kaiba. Overly confident and dreaming big like always. Disillusions of grandeur. He rolls his eyes.]

I'm sure our decks are still plenty useful as is.

[Hmm. He had thought this place might have been a simulation in one of Kaiba's crazy VR programs but with him here and unfamiliar with everything, that means this is indeed real.

That's a relief, honestly. Knowing his Pokémon are real makes him feel better.]

I'll save you a lot of time and trouble by telling you that it's a waste to try. The only thing we might be able to do is get our current cards reprinted somewhere.

[ Kaiba huffs. Doesn't mean he'll stop trying, but boy is this world frustrating. No money, no power, no reality warping....]

Very well. I'll be happy to duel you when we get back to town...and Mizuchi will duel Chenzira once she's learned.

Yes, seriously.

[To show he means business and isn't up to any tricks, Marik holds out his hand. Chenzira claps his hands and cheers quietly.]

It's a deal then. We should make decent time now that they're two of us. I might be able to even teach you how to be stealthy in order to avoid trainers.

[ Kaiba hesitates a moment longer. He's aware Marik holds all the power here...but not quite as much power as the Rod had. It could be worse. And Mizuchi and Chenzira seem to like each other...

Maybe it's not such a bad deal after all. And should worst come to worst, he can always claw his way out of trouble. With that, he nods and takes Marik's hand. ]

Mm. Deal. But don't make me regret not getting it in writing.

[thetombkeeper]

[Marik gives a firm handshake and offers a playful smirk although there's no malice behind it.]

[ I'd love to! I'll have to wait til the event announcement, though...sounds like a major event that shakes up the setting for a month is going to drop immediately after he (hopefully) arrives, but we can always re-plot if needed ]
