[It definitely didn't come across like it was intended, until the identity of the person he was talking to was revealed, then he lightened up]

pretty coincidental.

well, i do have some info but nothing too intensely amazing. i know for certain that joey is here, kaiba as well. bakura i spoke with and was informed that a certain insane duelist from battle city is around.

I don't know, all of that seems pretty amazing to me. [Except for the part about Kaiba, Tristan was never the greatest fan of that guy.] An insane duelist? ... Uh, you might have to narrow that down. [What with the myriad of Rare Hunters that had been in operation then and not a one of them seemed all that sane...

... unless she meant the guy that was the perpetrator of it all.] You don't mean Marik, do you? [While he could understand her own aversion to that particular duelist, he should be fine now. Free from negative influence.] Did Bakura happen to mention if Marik was currently acting insane...?

most of it is pretty good. there are a couple on that list i could do without.

So, speaking of Joey. Have you spoken to him directly?

[Staring at the screen a little anxiously as he sent that one. It had been quite a while since Tristan and his friends had seen the seasoned duelist and it hadn't exactly ended on the best note. Joey had always had a special connection to Mai, and there was no doubt that her absence likely hit him the hardest. Concern for his best friend practically demanded some clarity on how that reunion went down.]

Hey, I get that. No one's judging you.

[... though Marik wasn't exactly fully in control of himself at the time she was sent to the shadow realm either. He ultimately decided that now was not the time to point that out. They both were at the mercy of that wacko spirit that had taken the reigns.]

I'm just trying to get some sense of what we might need to look out for

joseph and i spoke at length, actually. he seems to be doing pretty well for himself here.

[ she couldn't give two shits about whether or not marik was being controlled at the time. nothing ( in her mind ) will excuse what happened to her if only because it caused her to go down a hard path following the incident. ]

honestly, i didn't want to talk about him. bakura is the one who mentioned him, so, you might want to check in with him if you want the details. he mentioned briefly that he wasn't the same, or something, but my desire to give a damn was pretty low.

[Something about her using his friend's proper name didn't sit well with him. By now shouldn't they all know each other well enough to stick to the more casual form? Tristan knew that he probably wouldn't get anything more out of Mai. If he wanted to know how Joey felt about ... everything, he would have to ask directly.]

That's a relief. With Joey, you never know how it's going to turn out when he's left to his own devices.

[ not to fret with the name usage, tristan. it was more or less because she considers them friends that she does this. also, it's a method to flirt with him in a way that most others wouldn't think of — not that he knows that. ]

and people think i'm harsh on the guy, sheesh.

Been there. I won't say I was totally cool with it, but I've been through this kind of thing more than I like to think about. Maybe saying I was resigned to it was more of a way to describe it.

lots of things make me happy, but, that isn't one of them. it might make HIM happy to hear it though. he really does seem to be holding his own here, though. make sure you look for him to check in just in case it's all bravado.

It wouldn't be a day ending in "Y" if we weren't getting into something bizarre. [It was almost stranger just to share a quiet day together] I'm in one piece and nothing is currently trying to attack me so I figure.. I'm doing pretty good.
