"You're kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place then." Absentmindedly, he reached up to give his pokémon a few strokes to the head as he kept his attention on her. "You know what she's thinking?" That only sounded a little peculiar to Tristan, as his gaze swept down to the Budew and back. "Did you get one that's able to talk or something?" There were times, several in fact, where he couldn't tell what his monster wanted at all. Maybe if he'd had a pet or something growing up then it would have made it easier.

"So you already know how to use that thing? ... I know I'm supposed to be helping you but I'm clueless on all of this. Can you show me what I'm supposed to do with this stuff?" And which one the Pokédex even is. That would be a good start. "I'm Tristan, by the way. Tristan Taylor, you are?"

To be fair, the technology of this world is still new to her though she did used it a while ago when learning about Carmen’s kind and those pesky squirrels and rabbit earred rodents.

“Well she really wants to fight as well, though her size could be an obstacle she has to overcome. Hopefully there is a way for her to evolve into a species that is much stronger,” Isabela admits to him.

“Oh, I had used the Pokédex in my PokéGear a while ago and it does have a speech feature whenever I look up on a Pokémon. I am still new in using the device but it has been pretty handy in learning about the species of this world. My name is Isabela Madrigal. It is very nice to meet you, Tristan.”

It's new to him too, so maybe they can fumble their way through some of it during the course of this conversation. The guy didn't even have a cell phone in his dimension.

"I've had friends like that... kind of small in stature but determined to face whatever is thrown at them." Though he couldn't imagine Yugi, the person he was referencing, evolving into another version of himself, he could always trade places with the pharaoh and let him fight. That was kinda like an evolution. Not at all like one.

"Hey, that sounds pretty handy. I wonder if I got one of those." Reaching for his bag, Chimchar moves to sit on the top of his head. "Why you little..." Not to be entirely distracted, he pulls out the first bit of tech he can find in that backpack. "Is it this thing?"

"Nice to meet you too. I hang out with a lotta guys so I don't often get to talk to someone as attractive as you. That's not a pick-up line, just the truth."

“Yep, that is the one. That thin is a nifty thing to use on the go,” Isabela replies in a relieved tone, “Oh gee thanks. That is really honest of you to say that. Most folks in my home had used to see me in a little shallower light which did annoyed me for a long time.”

Tristan examined the Pokégear a little closer, starting to press a few buttons on it. For it's part the chimchar leans over to spy at it himself, partially dropping over it's trainer's face.

".. Did I stick my foot in my mouth already?" Not sure whether she was being sarcastic or not. I mean, he had commented on her looks which might have been triggering if that's what she was used to. "That might be a new world record." The self-deprecating humor was meant to lighten the atmosphere.

"If you saw the guys I usually hang out with, you'd understand why I said it."

“Oh my. Do they try to flirt with a lot of ladies in your world that often?”

Isabela’s eyes widen in surprise, wondering what Tristan’s guy friends are thinking when she heard that last one. Carmen, being still a young Pokémon, looks to be very stumped about the dating behavior of humans with a stumped look on her face.

“Bud? Dew?”

"Oh.. the guys?" He was stunned momentarily by her question since he hadn't expected such directness. "No.. I uh.. I meant they're not as nice to look at. That's all.. but I guess Duke has a reputation for flirting with... ha.. anyway. Can you just forget everything I said for the last five minutes?" Shifting uneasily as he spoke, his chimchar clung on for stability.

Wow, it was only his first day and he was already making a great first impression.

“Um sure right. Pretending like the last few minutes did not happened,” she nervously chatters about like she just forgot to grab something before going out.

Carmen happily bounces up and down on the ground, trying to get herself excited for the journey, “Budew, Budew, Budew!”

“Wow, you must be very excited to go and see the other places in Jotho, aren’t you, Carmen?”

“Bud-Dew!”

How to make things awkward in 20 lines or less, Tristan could pen a whole guide to the concept. He was just about to try and steer this back into a normal conversation avenue when her Budew chimed in.

"Aw, well- don't let me hold you up if you two want to get underway. Carmen seems like she's just raring to go."

There's still the matter of safety though.

"Do ya think that once you get to the other side of this route you might find an area that's better for training your pokémon? I mean, Chimchar and I wouldn't mind coming along at least that far so you don't have to turn around again."

“Oh yes, that is a great idea, Tristan. I couldn’t wait to get out of this forest and find a place where I can help Carmen in training so she can get better in battling with other Pokémon,” Isabela smiles as she agrees with the suggestion, “You and Chimchar can come with us and maybe we can have some training battles to help each other out.”

“Bud-Dew! Dew!”

Hey! This time he said something right! "Sure, I can't see why not," He answered to the additional suggestion of holding their own training matches. Even though he tended to leave the battles to others, at least when it involved monsters, it didn't look like this was the type of world where that usual behavior would fly. "You know technically.. this isn't the first time I've ever been in a place like this." He decided to offer up a few details.

"It wasn't exactly the same- but it still involved having to partner up with real monsters in order to make any kind of progress."

"Hopefully, I can apply some of that experience here." After a pause. "Are you ready to head back out?"
