Izzy Izumi | Digimon Adventure (1999)
[Waking up in somewhere entirely new is not exactly anything new to Izzy. Nor is being gifted a strange little monster out of nowhere, told it's your partner, and sent on the road without little more than a "Good luck!" What is new is the particular makeup of this new monster of his, a blind little blue bat, and how otherwise... normal this place seemed to be.
Anyone happening by the little area outside of New Bark is going to see the kid pacing back and forth reading from the guide in the backpack he'd been given, all while a Zubat perched on top of his head, just happy to be along for the ride.]
"...and are quite happy to remain inside their Pokeballs for as long as needed, which can be shrunk down to a more travel-friendly size for convenience." Fascinating!
[He stopped and gestured up, which got a little squeak from Zubat.]
So, this world, while being more grounded than a- [Chuckle] -certain other one that I'm used to, still has its own unique, almost science fiction elements! Of course, this is reality and not fiction...
[Back to pacing, back to read.]
"Despite the Pokeballs being part of a Pokemon's care, it's not all of it." Well duh.
[Zubat snickered.]
"Pokemon require food, water, and other basics of care, just like we all do! Following is a breakdown of the different foods, including the assorted berries available. Pay attention because some of these might even alter a Pokemon's appearance, causing it to evolve!"
[He stopped again, sitting down by his backpack, book open in his lap while he reached up with his other hand to idly rub Zubat's cheek.]
Utterly fascinating...

[Naturally it wouldn't take long for Izzy to start exploring the PokeGear. It was no laptop of course, but it was greater than a Digivice. Some of its functions were mundane, but at least one of them was a great draw of attention.]
Greetings, all. I understand that there are many of us who have arrived here from other worlds. With that in mind I just have a couple questions, if you'd be willing to indulge me:
1. How secure is this communication network? I can see some basic parameters on my own, but of course I'm not the SysOp so I hardly have the power to see it all.
2. How many of you come from a world in which there is some sort of monster? Partner type or otherwise.
Thank you.

What were your first impressions upon arriving here?

[Those had an actual name, according to Webby, but heck if Louie bothered remembering it. He'd been too busy focusing on surviving the craziness of a fae realm golf course... And exploiting Glomgold for caddy tips.]
First impressions, huh? It was a while ago, but I wasn't happy about all the walking and camping, that's for sure... But I liked that my first pokemon was a cat.
[At the start, Louie had been far from happy about anything, Shilling included... Yet now so little of that early unhappiness stands out.]

I could certainly understand why someone would be unhappy about the modes of travel and living that seem to be primary here; I feel like you and a friend of mine back home, Mimi, would certainly have a lot to talk about in that area.
But yours was a cat, then... Interesting. So those that arrive here from other planes of existence get assigned different partners. Not surprising, but certainly interesting.
It also sounds like you've been here quite a while, by now. Do you still have that cat?
no subject
I do still have him! Well, he's different now. Pokemon do this thing where they change and get stronger, they evolve.
[Oh wait this guy has nerd energy, he might be like Huey about this.]
It's a lot faster than the way living things normally evolve. Usually it's because they've battled and become more experienced, but there's other ways too.
Anyway, Shilling's still a cat, but now he's always on all fours and he's bigger. His head, especially, is bigger.
[Louie don't tease your pokemon where they can't see you doing so.]

When I first arrived, I received a Zubat. I wonder what sort of metrics are used to decide who gets what partner? If there are any and it's not just random. Improbable, though not unheard of, I suppose.

Although I do like cats a lot, and I got a cat for a starter both times... I've had two, because I was back home for a while.
