[In the tall grass, just outside of Violet City, on the Violet City side of Route 36, a young man sits, weaving plucked blades into something. It's impossible to tell what it is right now, he must have just started. A Honedge floats near him, apparently on watch. He turns to it, after a bit.]

You don't have to patrol so much, you know. [Honedge replies with a disgruntled noise. POKEMON LIVE IN THE TALL GRASS DON'T YOU KNOW???]

Not going to dissuade you, hmm? [He reaches into his nearby bag and pulls out some brightly colored Poke-puffs] Then, perhaps a snack would help?

[Honedge tries to stay annoyed, but it just can't in the presence of such delicacies. It settles down next to the man, happily munching on it's food. The man, in turn smiles and pats its handle affectionately, before going back to weaving.]

[Network]

.....Hello? [The camera jostles and moves around as Jack inspects the Gear.]

I think I've activated this device, somehow. [He peers into the camera lens, giving the network a nice closeup of his eye.]

My apologies. I can tell that there is some sort of camera, but I must admit that the workings of such devices are still quite confusing to me.

Is...this connected to another device? The book read that it was meant for communication with others....um....if anyone can hear me, please, respond?

[It's Route 1, where virtually all adventures begin! Stomping across the fields is a large Tropius, thumping across the ground with a little girl sitting on its back.]

Thanks for letting me ride on you, Tropius. At the very least, we can get to Veridian City faster and I can walk the rest of the adventure, okay?

[There's a roar as the Pokemon nods before stopping. Seems like a group of trainers were nearby. Were they blocking the path?]

...that's not good. Maybe we can avoid them?

Oh, hey, I got it working! Hi, everyone!

[And you can see Sasami waves at the camera, a big smile on her face.]

Hey, I'm curious about something - I'm at Veridian City, but there seems to be a lot of paths to choose from. Which one should I go to?

I only have one Pokemon, [Apple reasoned with the trainer who was looking sheepish.] Can't you give me a pass for once?

[Said trainer seemed to be awkwardly mumbling how eyes locking meant battle but...]

I promise I'll come back when I'm stronger, all right?

[She's close enough for people to hear her too.]

It's connected to a network--a sort of shared communication between a large number of devices. So yes, anyone who has one can hear you.

I take it you've just arrived in this world?

Hmm? [Turning around to Sasami, Apple shook her head as she held up a hand for a moment to keep the trainer from butting in.]

Oh no, I'm just negotiating a pass. I mean, a level 1 Pokemon versus a trainer of level 5? it'd be a mismatch. I'm just rooting for fairness.

Well, you probably don't want to head west, as that path leads to the Indigo Plateau, which you can't enter until you've earned badges from all sixteen gyms. But other than that, which way depends on where you're trying to get to, or what sort of place you'd like to go to.

Oh... yeah, that would be unfair, especially to the beginner. I didn't think there would be trainers here, though. I guess some decided to show up.

Well... I was thinking of challenging the gyms, so, I guess wherever the first badge is!

I wouldn't mind doing that as well. It wouldn't be right to leave you hanging because of our unpreparedness.

There's a gym in Viridian City itself, but generally the "first" gym in Kanto is traditionally considered to be the one in Pewter City, to the north.

[Just a normal kid, not a princess. Definitely not bonded to a goddess here.]

...why is Veridian first, but Pewter's the first actual gym?

I couldn't say, but if I recall, I believe the gym leader in Viridian is relatively new, so presumably the reasons for it come from a time before that. The gym there now is certainly one of the most challenging of the Kanto gyms, however.

It really is - I've never really travelled before, so this is a whole new experience for me!

I've made a couple of journeys before, at least once to Wonderland and other places around Ever After.

This is a new experience for me though, and I'm quite hexcstatic to be here.

Wonderland? Ever After? Are those places from your home?

[cidery]

That's right. Ever After is my home, and Wonderland is another land outside our own. It's where most of Ever After's magic comes from.
