[Oh, Goldenrod, Goldenrod, the sheer size of you is staggering! So big, so bright, and so full of life - it's no wonder Jane's thrown herself into the city, positively humming with happiness just to walk in a crowd. She doesn't have enough money to do much shopping, but that bag in her hands does say something about a bakery on it, and inside there are definitely cupcakes. She's doing her best to hold them up and in front of her so no one knocks into them on accident, but in doing so she doesn't spot the small head of brown hair until - ]

[STOPPING SHORT OF THE CHILD RIGHT NOW and turning to the side, there we go, just narrowly avoided a collision.]

Sorry! I didn't see you there - I didn't knock into you, did I?

[She didn't feel anything but she should ask, just in case.]

Chara's heart froze solid at the nearness of that miss, though. As much because of the egg's fragility as because they really, truly hate humans. And the idea of physically running into one--or even almost doing that--makes their newly-acquired guts twist in visceral revulsion.]

[Chara stares at Jane hard. Really hard.

[Jane breathes a sigh of relief - the last thing she wanted to do was hurt anybody - but she's quick to notice the stare Chara's sending her way.

...Oh my, that's...a powerful stare, isn't it? And with those eyes...m-maybe she startled them? Maybe they're upset? Uh...shoot, now she feels bad.]

O-Oh. Good! I'm...really sorry, I'll be more careful next time.

[...Standing there awkwardly...]

[She didn't get the hint. And Chara has never been good at conflict resolution.

So instead of telling her to buzz off--or doing the sensible thing and turning around and leaving by themself--they plaster a big, wide smile on their face, just for her.

Inside, however, they're seething.]

Well--

[Something smells really good around here. Like food.

And it only hits them that instant. When their stomach growls loudly, interrupting anything they might have been about to say.

Their mouth snaps shut, surprise briefly overtaking their expression.

[No, not at the moment, she hasn't picked up on it. Part of her is blinded by the fact that this is clearly a child all by themselves, and though this place seemed like the safest in the world for a child to harness the power of creatures and explore the wilderness, there's still a bit of concern there.

But then she hears their stomach growl, and looks a little surprised - then looks down at her bag.]

Oh - you know, how about you take one of these? Just so there's no hard feelings. I bought them to share with my friends, but I have plenty to spare.

[And yep, looks like she's taking the box out of the bag and opening them up. Holy crap, are they cute.]

[Food.

Chara is suddenly really, really glad they opted for the smile, because holy crap.

For a moment they just stand there in slight shock--they're being offered free food, no strings attached.

Then they stand there for a few seconds longer, because they're being offered free food, no strings attached.

Make no mistake, Chara wants the cupcake. Now aware of how truly hungry they are, having such a delicious treat put right in front of them is almost too much. And they're not immune to that luscious display of frosting, the tempting ring of sprinkles.

And then there's the contents.

What if it's a chocolate one?

There's no way they're turning that down.

But that means Chara doesn't get to blow Jane off. They can't just turn on their heel and walk away now. She'll get to see them eat it, and probably like it.

They'll probably have to talk to her.

It's an excruciating choice.

...then again, Chara is nine. It's a personal cake. There was never any chance of a different decision to begin with.

Which is to say, they take the cupcake.]

[It's quiet--and maybe a little grudging (or is it resentful?)--but it's a thank you.

Then there's cupcake in Chara's mouth and they can't talk any more.]

[They are totally chocolate ones. Chocolate is a universally beloved flavor. She nods and smiles at the thank-you, carefully closing the box after Chara takes one, so at the very least she's focused on that and not on them.]

You're very welcome! I'd offer it to your Pokemon, but I really don't know if these are any good for them to eat. I know they make special cakes for Pokemon? But I have yet to buy any of those.
