So. Newt.

Newt honestly reminds Armin of himself — just, you know, maybe an older version of himself. They are both driven towards knowledge, but they are also both sort of socially awkward, not people who naturally put themselves in the spotlight or people who tend to joke much. That makes it very easy for Armin to become friends with Newt because they share a lot of the same interests, but also they have the same sort of thoughtful way of talking about things. And Armin never has to worry about missing a joke with Newt cause Newt is always earnest about what he says.

In any sort of friendship, I think it is important for Armin to feel some level of intellectual stimulation. Like, he can make friends with people who don’t do that, but his best friendships are generally with people where he can brain with. So Newt falls in that category very easily because there is so much he can teach Armin. And he seems very open to teaching Armin. His attitude has never discouraged questions, which makes it easy for Armin to ask them.

Because of how similar they are and the fact that Newt is more or less and older version of the person he wants to be some day, Armin also very much wants to impress him. He really wants Newt to look at him and sort of see an equal. Like, he doesn’t think he is there yet (cause it wouldn’t be Armin without some level of self-esteem issues), but he hopes one day to become the sort of man Newt is.

He’s also attracted to Newt, though he hasn’t quite figured that out yet. It’s basically baby’s first gay crush where you aren’t certain if you wanna be that person or be with that person. Either way though, once he does figure out that he’s into Newt like that, it’s going to be a bit of adjusting for him (being that he comes from a world where that sort of thing is not considered normal). But there it actually helps that he is crushing on Newt cause there is no pressure to actually go after him. And because Newt isn’t the best at social situations, he’s also unlikely to realise Armin is crushing on him, which helps.

Eventually he’ll grow out of the crushy feelings, but his admiration for Newt is going to stay the same. He’d basically love to become a tiny apprentice to Newt in all things pokemon handling.
