So. Jean.

At this point, especially with Eren and Mikasa not here, Armin sees Jean as his best friend. Even if they would show up here again, that wouldn't change cause Jean fills a best friend niche that Eren and Mikasa don't.

(Armin, why do you have three best friends, stop hoarding them)

It is weird because when they first got here, they were still in that really early stage of friendship where they didn't really have a friendship. More an aquaintanceship but with potential. One year here though, and it has definitely grown into a solid friendship. They don't always see eye to eye on a lot of things, but somehow that is the strength of their friendship: they have diverse viewpoints, but rather than having that push them apart, they are willing to discuss them and come to appreciate the other side, even if they won't always change opinion.

In Jean, Armin sees someone who has his back, who is intelligent and willing to discuss and change his opinion, who he can trust in to point out any flaws in his reasoning (which Armin appreciates as he'd rather have them be pointed out than have people just go along with him without thinking). He admires Jean's budding leadership capabilities (they are a bit more budding here cause there isn't so much testing him, but Armin knows they are there, he's seen them before) because leading is not something Armin can do, and he admires Jean's judgement (he's good at drawing quick conclusions) and his ability, while intelligent, to not necessarily get caught up overthinking things like Armin does. He is also impressed by Jean's ability to handle his pokemon and even deal with pretty difficult pokemon where other people might give up or choose a simpler way (like with rescuing the electrodes without harming them or just putting them to sleep)

But Jean is also someone who doesn't just get him thinking. Jean is also someone who makes Armin stop thinking sometimes. Armin overthinks and has a tendency to constantly take things seriously, but Jean is the kind of guy who can draw him out of that. He can tease Armin and make sure he isn't taking himself too serious all the time. He can get Armin to laugh with him. He can get him to stop overthinking things sometimes. For a guy like Armin, even if he will sometimes roll his eyes at it, it's actually pretty important in making sure he doesn't burn out too quickly.
