It's a form of technology. It's a bit complicated to explain in detail, but basically it uses energy such as electricity to transmit images and sound from one device to another. As for this place, it's a region called Johto, and the 'animal's are creatures native to this world known as Pokémon.

[Daine frowns and sits to get more comfortable. This could take a while. The Ponyta lies down behind Daine and she leans back against it.]

What's elektrisitty? Is it a type of magic?

[A coldness spreads through Daine's body at the rest of the man's words.]

What do you mean this world?

It's the natural energy found in lightning, and in the sparks produced sometimes from rubbing against a coarse fabric or such. It's commonly used here and in some other worlds to provide power for mechanical devices like these to function.

I mean that those of us who've found ourselves suddenly here with no explanation apparently invariably are drawn from worlds other than this one. I'm from the Roland Empire in the world of Menoris, myself.

[Okay, lightning energy Daine understood. She just didn't know it could be harnessed in that way - it sounded dangerous is any case. She'd have to tell Numair. Maybe he'd heard if it before? But the world thing...she nibbled a thumb, deeply concerned.]

[She's starting to get panicked. How would Numair find her if she was on a different world? What if his magic wasn't powerful enough? What if he never found her? What if...

[Ponyta gave her a hard knee in the back and Daine had the distinct image of pain in the head, and the feeling of wasting energy.]

I'm not, no. And we've yet to determine any sort of pattern as to just when or how people are returned to their worlds... However, there have been multiple accounts verifying that time that passes here has no effect on that of those other worlds.

[Daine was beginning to understand how the Ponyta was feeling - she was getting a headache herself. At least it sounded like she could get back home...but if time stopped back home, then Numair wouldn't be able to help her at all. ]

Sion Astal. It's a pleasure to meet you. And I quite understand, it can be a lot to take in.

What happens now? I mean, what do I do? Is there a city or town I should head to? I can earn my keep - I'm good with animals...

[Daine knew how to live off the land but this world was completely different - she didn't even know if the plants were similar to back home. ]

That's up to you, really. I saw you have a ponyta there, one of the many kinds of pokemon that inhabit this world. Typically, most people called "trainers" will travel with their pokemon companions, challenging other trainers and wild pokemon to friendly matches to test and increase their strength.

Other people prefer to stay in one place, picking a particular city or area to live in, some have even opened businesses here. Short of doing something unlawful like stealing other peoples' pokemon, you're generally welcome to do whatever you prefer.

You mean people use these beautiful animals to fight for a living? That's horrible! What kind of person would do that?

There must be something else I can do to earn a living because I refuse to do that. Are there stables I could work at, or even a royal kennel?

Have you tried asking the opinion of your partner there on the matter? In most cases, it's the pokemon themselves who desire to hone and test their skills in the first place.

*and some with no interest in battling, but in his experience those are the exception, rather than the rule*

There is a ranch in western Johto, and I believe someone runs a breeding center in Kanto, but there's no official "royalty" or such here to have a kennel in the first place.
