[ She attempts to drum up anything to say to that, but really, she has nothing. If he considers himself lucky, then he is. Good for him to feel that way, and not sarcastically. But that's that. ]

The uncertainty is an annoyance. I suppose it is what it is. How much time passes back where we're from... is that known at all?

I know how it sounds. But... when you do go back, you're right back where you left off.

[ Wow, that's singularly depressing! Enough so it startles her into something like a choked off laugh, lungs constricting. She came from darkness, and she'll return to that, still unaware and unable to reflect how much, if any, time has passed. She'll either be a prisoner of an enemy, or potentially the prisoner of an ally.

This place is all stolen time. That... she doesn't know what to make of that. ]

How has this been verified?

I don't know if it helps to tell you that it gets easier, being here. That's been my experience. The same goes for a lot of other people I know.

[ Ah, one of Those Types. Not that she registers that so much as that this person is making an effort to reassured, and she's not feeling the need to be reassured. Her reassurances are a world away, unless her father manages to show up here, and she's not even sure how that would work out in the end.

She shakes her head, tapping out words in response. ]

As far as I can tell so far, this is a less shitty place than where I was. Isn't that the sort of thing that's supposed to make it easier? That seems to be what people say.

[He is one of those. More so now than ever. Especially when that's a definitely familiar sentiment for people arriving here to have. A lot of his friends included.]

It can be, yeah. But it's an adjustment. The lack of trouble is hard for people to get used to, sometimes.

[ Shiro is a good man. Not that Annie knows it, but she reads what he's written and acknowledges she can see how this person's words are true. ]

What forms of crime end up being common here? I've heard mention about a Team Rocket, and it doesn't seem like permanent disappearances and kidnappings are that common. So what is?

That's about it. Sometimes Team Rocket shows up, tries to steal pokemon, but... There really isn't much.

At all. Come to think of it.

There's no petty theft? Muggings? Drug rings? Assault? Brawling? Drunken nuisances? Pokemon attacks?

If there are, then no one's bothered to report any of them. The only thing that happens is random pokemon causing problems -- but everyone's pretty quick to handle that.

This is a place where children travel the world with only animals around to look after them. It's the most peaceful I've ever seen in my life.

Or most things are handled on local levels and aren't reporting elsewhere.

I haven't heard, or asked before, but what kind of government is found here?

There IS a police force. Maybe they do handle things, but if there were those kinds of problems, wouldn't we hear about them?

A really good question. Wish I had an answer. If there is one, it's not obvious -- and no, I don't know how that works.

Have you checked through their records, if they allow the public to access them? If reporting isn't mandated, I doubt anyone will bother to take the time to keep the public aware of the annoyances they deal with.

Surely someone is responsible for the money? Who prints it? Or... whatever it is people here do in order to trade for goods, because it isn't all bartering, that much I know.

I will be honest with you -- none of these things ever occurred to me to look into. Checking records, looking into money ... it stopped mattering.

Getting by was all I worried about for months when I got here. And then... there were people from home to look after while we were on the road. After that, one thing lead to another, and I was back to just "getting by".



Can I ask why this is something you're so interested in?

[ She supposes she can't answer that it's more survival mechanisms kicking in, and the bizarre nature of being able to ask with no one knowing or caring who she is in particular. Also, having striven for so many years to integrate with a culture that wasn't her own, paying attention, knowing these details, understanding what information could be found where, researching, knowing how the government worked? All necessary.

Not what she's going to say, of course, but still true. ]

You just described this as a world where children wandered with animals in peace, but adjusting was so difficult you were just trying to get by for months and not curious about anything structuring the place you were surviving in.

Either way, it's not my interest, exactly. It was part of my job before, and so I wondered.

[ As a soldier? A warrior? As the soldier more. The warrior just needed to know enough to play the system and get in place to where she was needed. The soldier needed to know how to do her job within Wall Sina, and she had, for better and worse. ]

Yeah, I guess... the way I phrased that wasn't the best way. Or made the most sense.

Then again, there's a lot about this place that doesn't make sense. But I think you're the first one who's asked those kinds of questions when they got here. If you run into a man named Ford, he could probably tell you a lot more than I could.

But if you want to talk astronomy or piloting, that, I think I could manage.

[Not to mention, he's never been one to take the best care of himself. So that factored into things. There had been a lot more going on than what he'd told her, as well.]

Ah, I was in the Military Police. Not for long. We'd graduated from training a month or so before.

[ She can guess there was more going on, but her interest was more in the poor explanations and contrast, and how she really can't imagine that "peace" in and of itself doesn't have a cost somewhere. Like in sensibility, given some of the absurdities she's encountered, but no world is really sensible in the first place. ]

He's a smart man -- been here longer, or as long as I have, and he's the type to look into those kinds of things. Or at least have better answers.
