Come on, Su- I mean Tubbs. Take it. I don't want it. [The Arcanine accepts whatever is being offered to him in his person's hand happily, because he's missed him.]

[Hank had been so happy to lose those fifteen pounds while he'd had to tread around the wilderness and do janitorial work, even if he didn't admit it at the time. Now he is back, and he got those fifteen pounds back, and god it's hot and he has to lose weight while it's hot and he just wants a goddamn glass of lemonade. But no. He's drinking water like a good rational human being. Ice cream? Not gonna happen today. He's passing off a carrot to one of his dogs because he couldn't bring himself to live on those as snacks.]

[But in a way, it's good to be back. He has some idea of what he can do back home to help, and for the moment he feels less stranded. More reassured that his old life will be waiting for him. And if he sees it again, it'll give him back all his old weight. Too bad for the transient nature of fuckin' body fat.]

[At least the breeze coming off the ocean in Goldenrod is nice and makes up for the fact he returned to a steep rise in temperatures (worst possible time of year to get that weight back). So he ambles off in that direction, hoping to bump into someone he knows.]

So now that I'm back, I've been trying to get caught up on some cases. Looks like about half the ones I'd saved up had been found. But it looks like some still need some help.

Speaking of missing Pokemon, I hear prom went a lot better this time? I'm sorry I missed it.

[Really sorry, actually. He's got a suit now that, even when he's able to fit back into it, he's got nothing special he can do with it.]

Anything interesting happen? You know, besides the giant irritable pokemon.

[ jack had heard of hank's leaving - and connor letting everyone know - and it had made him undeniably sad. he'd kept his notes from when he and hank had talked about his missing pokemon cases, and playing golf on the ss aqua just wasn't the same without him, even if it was minigolf.

scout, his arcanine, stands up stiff when they're walking in goldenrod though. jack, carrying crybaby and jolene on his shoulders, turns to look at him - and then scout is off, running through the grass to another arcanine across the field. ]

Scout - hey! Come back here!

[ jack's order is a sharp bark, but he takes off after his arcanine. scout, for his part, barrels into his father at full speed with a happy bark, licking his face enthusiastically and probably knocking that carrot out of his face.

jack catches up and comes up short, surprised. ]

Hank?

[Hank has to step out of the way because Tubbs suddenly has a familiar face in his own, and that massive pom of a tail starts wagging. It's lucky it has fluffy padding or the it'd be one of those bruising club dog-weapons. He's absolutely delighted to see Scout again, trying to wrap his paws around his son's shoulders.]

[Likewise, immediately when Hank sees Jack, Hank's arms go up in strategic bro-hug formation.]

Jack! How're ya doin'? [Sorry for that extra padding but it makes for a slightly cushier hug, right?]

[ scout easily takes his bigger father's weight, happy howling at him. he's missed his father, for all that it's been only a short time that he's been gone. he'd gone by the the pokemon farm, but he couldn't find him...

jack absolutely goes in for the bro hug, squeezing hank tightly. and yes, he feels that he gained back some of that weight. ]

I'm doin' going. Let me tell you, buddy, you missed quite the party.

[ jack grins. ]

Although it feels like you had one back home, too.

[He grunts at that.]

Just got a body reset is all. [He's a strong guy. Just, you know... revenge of the donuts.]

I've only been there for a couple of days. We got the hell out of Detroit, I figured I'd start setting up some pro-android interviews with the news. And now I'm back and it's a helluvalot hotter than Great Lakes winters, holy shit.

Sorry I didn't get to go to the prom thing, though. [He'd gotten a suit and everything.] I wanted to see you there.

[ listen, jack has kept up his exercise but he's definitely developed a bit of a 'dad bod' in the time he's been here, without his super special soldier genes to take up the slack.

Not everyone agreed with my pre-prom attire. My new nickname is "Commander Socks". But I had a pretty good time at it.

[ oh, that tone. something good definitely happened for jack at that prom, though he doesn't seem inclined to disclose too much. ]

[To Hank, he still looks like Sgt. Hardass, like the sorta guy that 'comes in for one last job' in the sequel that happens twenty years after the first movie. But you know what? He is going to take advantage of the situation and pat his stomach.]

Hey when I lose this and you put some on and catch up, we can dress to match.

[It's a stupid joke and he's made it and Hank just has to live with it now.]

I missed you being 'Commander Socks'? God fucking dammit. That's almost worth putting up with the giant hellbird. [But he hears something else in that tone. And he's the type of guy to ask-] Find yourself a hot date to take?

[ he's just sergeant hardass, one of four elderly characters in a colorful first person shooter. jack swats at hank's hand easily, pretty happy to see his friend. jolene, the shiny sylveon, also swats at hank in mimicry, but she seems in a good mood. ]

We'll coordinate for fourth of July.

[ at the question of finding himself a hot date, jack actually manages to turn his ears red. ]

Definitely wasn't a date, but I did end up kissing someone.

[ a little more than that too. ]

A good friend of mine, though, so it's nothing like you and Connor.

Alright, alright. [He says to the little Sylveon.] I'll wait until he's fit to make Pillsbury doughboy sounds before I do that again.

[God when was the last time he even saw those commercials.]

[The comment on it being a good friend, though, makes him chuckle.] Probably better. Connor's great, but we didn't get off on the right foot. [His fault entirely, based on the biases that were caused by a human malfunction that he chose to ignore for the sake of having someone to blame.] Less baggage to start out with.

Went from missing pokemon to running across two legendaries. People are of mixed feelings about it, but the worst that anyone faced was getting lobbed back to the boat for bothering Lugia.

The little blue type pokemon from the plane crash I've been taking care of was out on the deck when we finally saw Articuno. Seemed really happy, which is a first.

Anyone figure out what those new Pokemon are called yet? Or is it still sort of a game of madlibs trying to arrange the syllables?

Glad that there wasn't a disaster.

[Honestly he would have kicked the hell out of himself for being gone. Even if it wasn't his fault, he would have wanted to be around to help. Though maybe it's for the best that Hank didn't see the giant bird because if anyone would have had a bad encounter with it? It would have been the man scared of birds.]

Who got tossed back? And did they deserve it? [He needs to know where it lies on the range of 'I hope they're not hurt' and 'someone better have laughed'.]

Still a game of figuring out what the correct sound-syllable order is.

[ Very hard to handle a fear when a giant breathing version of it shows up to roost on a nearby island, it's true. ]

I'll be perfectly honest: I didn't keep track. No injuries were serious, and they'd had to force their pokemon to even get that close. So yes. They deserved it. The more sensible ones were helping cut down on the elements the ship was dealing with.

How rough was it on the ship?

[He hadn't heard about that bit, just that the credits had a big "Guest Appearances by-" notes included. Though come to think of it, maybe there had been a purpose to those comments he'd heard about the ship not sinking besides the sarcastic observation that 'hooray, not everything went wrong'.]

In some cases I guess pokemon can be a lot damn smarter than their trainers.

Have you been on the open ocean during a thunderstorm? Similar, with less lightning, and the ship was large enough that most swells were ridden without massive listing. Not kind to those who get seasick, but nothing like being out on a small boat on a windy day.

[ She thinks of Bertolt with that, and hopes he didn't suffer too much. ]

They can. Different personalities balance each other.

I've been on police search boats during bad storms on Lake Erie, which is about as big as a sea if you're from one of those places without it. So I know it can get rough.

Glad no one went over. [Though if what he remembers about this place is accurate, some mystery water pokemon probably would have saved anyone who did.]

Yeah. I guess I get that.

[He was really happy to get his flower Pokemon back when she came back, and she's infinitely more sweet and cute and personable than he ever has been in his entire life, possibly even as a baby when sweetness is a prerequisite. But she's been one of the best pokemon that he's ended up with.]

Most my sea experience has been here.

[ Not true. But "technically" true. ]

Oh, I'm sure some people did, but the waters were rife with pokemon whose trainers were onboard. No loss of life. Just warmth. And dignity, in a few cases.

[ Pokemon tempering personalities is a phenomena she's witnessed on most every team. Including her own, to different degrees. ]

Welcome back, for what that's worth. Maybe next year's Prom will be likewise pleasant and mildly surprising.

I do remember while I was here before I had to ride away from a very serious discussion on a dog. I don't think dignity matters all that much after your third month or so.

Here's hoping I'll get to see it. I had a date I wanted to take. Guess he gets to wait a whole other year before I can give him the chance.

[He sort of hopes Connor went anyway. He'd have loved to see the legendaries. It'd be a real pity if he missed it. He'd left him a note, encouraging him to go lead a good human life if he disappeared. He still isn't sure how well he followed it.]

[He's glad he got to see home, though, and can have plans for the future. It settled his stomach some.]

I found it! It made friends with a baby fire weasel while it was lost and when it went home the fire weasel went with it!

And I'm glad to know if I end up gone, I got someone here to keep up the work. [It had been a small goal while here, but now that he's back? It feels more satisfying than it did before. Less busy work, and more something good to do.]

Did any of the Tentacruel out on the ocean make prom any worse for you? [The ones that remember being roughly pelted, that is.]

At the mention of the Tentacruel, though, he laughs out loud. Maybe weirdly (maybe not?) he's not actually the kind of guy to type out his bullshit laughter, so Hank just gets more straight text.]

I didn't see any Jelly Squids the whole time! But a tentacle invasion would have been REALLY fun!

Believe it or not, while I'm not in love with this place? I feel pretty bad about abandoning everyone. I honestly didn't think I'd be missed. I've been living my life with that impression for a while.

[Hank's head's not been in a great place for some time. But it makes him feel a little bad to know that he's been thinking that way when people did seem to miss him so badly.]

[Though TBF a cruise ship full of Pokemon Trainers definitely has a hell of a good chance against one giant squid.]

[He thinks that he forgot how to be a good guy for a long time. He was too depressed to put in the effort. So on the other end he gets the slightest bit choked up, enough that he clears his throat audibly and is glad no one can hear it. It's nice that after he's tried to drive so many people off he can still come off as a decent person sometimes.]

Gotta admit, that's one video that'd go viral.

[It's true. And even if Hank had been there, the pokemon he always has in his pocket is level 100.]
