[It's like dealing with Tidus all over again, and somehow, that's enough to almost make Auron smile. Teenagers.]

Is this hypothetical coffee drinking Pokemon otherwise acting out of the ordinary? Besides, perhaps, a purely hypothetical amount of excess energy?

[Riz is just going to send Auron a picture. It's of a Yungoos sitting on its haunches, a small flat cap on its head. It's also staring into the distance fixedly like it can see the very nature and structure of the universe, all atoms and the shining connections between them, its tail a slight blur from where it's twitching constantly.]

He's probably fine right?

I'd advise you to take him to a Pokemon Centre.

Think I'm going to pass on visiting the creepy identical nurses, thanks. And it is absolutely bonkers anyone would.

Which is more important to you: your fear or the health of your Pokemon?

This is not about fear. It's about not walking into a very obvious magical trap. Has nobody in this world taken Adventuring 101? This is the sort of stuff they teach you on the first day.

You would be surprised.

Hypothetically, of course.

It's not a matter of protection. There's some fights you don't walk into until you know exactly what you are dealing with. Because if you don't, the people around you are going to die. And anyway, coffee has never killed anyone before.

[Slightly hypocritical, because the Bad Kids had definitely rushed into fights foolheartedly before, but that was all of them together. And even then, some of them had died.

Right now it was just Riz and he had neither his arquebus or his sword of shadows, and seriously, Rogues? Not a good 1V1 class.]

[Okay, fair, rogues aren't the best 1V1 class, but paladins? Paladins excel at 1V1.]

In general.

Sometimes you have to make a choice on what's more important: protecting what matters to you or facing the unknown. I've

chosen both, before. And I know which choice I'd make again.

[Something in Riz bristles. He knows that this guy doesn't know what he -- what the bad kids have been through. And probably for most people what he says is half-decent advice.

But to hear it when Riz has faced the unknown time and time already to protect the people he cares about, when he's made a deal with the Shadowcat for Fabian's life, when he's gotten fired out of a cannon into the City of Dis to save his dad without even knowing if he was a good person at all, when he has scratched his hands bloody and scarred trying to get out of a crystal to save Penny and the rest of the girls (and had failed, had failed, had failed).

Yeah, it rankles him.]

Hey, no offense, dude. But you are not my teacher and I am not here for a lecture. And you don't know half of the choices I've had to make either.

[It takes Auron a few minutes to respond. He knows when he's overstepped, and although he bristles a bit at being called dude, he figures he deserved it.]

You're right, I don't know your story, or what you've experienced. I was making a judgment, and that wasn't right.

to imagine I was speaking to her.

[The apology leaves Riz feeling pretty mollified. He honestly wasn't expecting to get one. Especially an apology that sounded like an actual apology, and not just an excuse. Most people just double-down on things when you call them on it.]

Okay. Cool. That was cool of you to say. And just FYI, my friends and I have stopped an apocalypse, stopped an ancient dragon (who was also our vice-principal) from coming back, and now we are trying to stop the Nightmare King from returning. So yeah. You don't have to worry about us not knowing how to make difficult choices.

[Auron is a reasonably proud man, but not so proud that he won't admit when he's wrong, or made a mistake.]

Regarding your Pokemon, may I suggest making him a cup of chamomile tea and then just keeping an eye on him? With any luck, the caffeine will work its way through on its own.

Chamomile tea, not black or green. You don't want to give him anything with more caffeine in it.
