[For a moment he looks... positively heart broken and then Byleth's actual words come seem to register and he just blinks at the camera in confusion.]

..... Collect.... me....?

I don't believe anyone has made any plans to ah- "collect me" to anywhere, Professor.

Oh- is that so? I shall ask Claude or Dimitri to do so then. I'm afraid I don't have anything that can fly, but they do. We can't have you out in the cold like that.

[ A firm nod. ]

Rest assured, a warm meal and some hot tea will be waiting for you. I'm looking forward to seeing you, and meeting your ah... little friend.

D-Dimitri?!

[Felix is scary, sure, but the mad king is an entirely different level of terrifying and Lorenz absolutely looks it for a moment, eyes wide and one hand raised to his chest as though he might still his frantic heartbeat with a touch.]

[He glances away, takes a steadying breath. Goddess but it's harder than he'd imagined to face the people he's failed so recently. Even if others have insisted that not everyone's memories match up.]

I... certainly admired you in our school days. And the other Lions as well but... The Golden Deer represent the best the Alliance had to offer. How could I step away from that?

I had little choice in the matter and as soon as I realized I tried to stand down. You assured me you'd get me back to Derdriu and Claude but Ferdinand... he wouldn't listen and then- That godawful woman.

[He shakes his head, grimacing at the memory, one hand coming up to rub at the lingering ache where his shoulder had been all but torn to pieces.]

I wasn't expecting to see anyone again, Professor.

Oh Lorenz. I'm so sorry. That's horrible. I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you.

[ He's determined now though... ]

I will gladly look after you here though. There is no war and no fighting here. I think you will find it to be quite relaxing as I have. Please let me know if there is anything at all that I can do to help, or assist you in feeling more at ease.

No war... that is a relief but... it certainly seems that a lot of people are quite eager to fight. It is a bit disconcerting.

[He's not so sure about this pokémon battle thing.]

Ah, the fights here seem to be more like friendly sparring matches from what I have observed. As such- no bodily harm as come to me or anyone thus far in my time here. I can assure you, you are indeed safe.

I will see to it myself that you are comfortable here.

Friendly sparring matches in which we're expected to allow... pets? to be harmed instead of ourselves?

[He frowns, lips pressed in a hard line of disapproval. Come on Byleth with how soft he has always been for his horse how do you expect him to let an already chipped teacup fight for him.]

I appreciate the assurance, Professor, I do. But please bear in mind it is not your responsibility to see to everyone's safety and comfort either. You are a stranger in this land just as much as anyone else.

Trust me, I had the same reservations. It's something Pokemon actually take part in regardless of human intervention. They appear to treat it much like a sport or competition amongst themselves.

They are far smarter than the animals back home. Many seem to be able to fully understand human speech.

[ The gentle admonishment earns a resigned sigh. ]

I realize that, but I enjoy looking after everyone. Once everyone left after the war, despite having nothing but busy days, I felt bereft. My calling is to watch over you.

[He has every intention of further addressing the concerns of pokémon battle but then Byleth goes and talks about his calling and Lorenz just... looks so touched and a little bit heartbroken at the same time.]

I have missed you, Professor.

[Which is all he can get out without getting overly emotional. Again.

Goddess but he's an emotional mess]

And I you, Lorenz. Rest assured, a warm cup of tea and a sympathetic ear will be waiting here for you when you arrive.

[ Somehow despite having such a flat voice, he manages to sound completely reasuring. ]

Of that I have no doubt. I will let you know when Claude and I are heading back that way.
