Ruins of Alph - Action

[If there's anything Ryou inherited from his dad, it's a curiosity about ancient ruins.

As a result, he's exploring the ruins, a Hisuian Zorua trotting at his heels. Ryou's just looking at some carvings when his Zorua suddenly barks at thin air, startling him as he turns to see what the problem is.]

What do you see, Banshee? [Banshee just continues to growl at thin air, her fur bristling at whatever she's reacting to.]

... Hi. Uh, you wake up in weird places a lot?

[Is this person a sleepwalker?]

I used to, but I shouldn't anymore.

Where am I?

[He doesn't have the Ring anymore, so all the finding himself in weird places should have stopped. And it did, until Ryou woke up in a strange bed in a strange house with a strange woman calling herself his mom who all but shoved him out the door.]

You're probably in New Bark Town. We still don't know why, but people keep being pulled out of their worlds and are brought here. This is a world where there's these animals called Pokemon. Some people battle with them, because for some funny reason many of them like battling. But others have them as pets or companions or helpers.

[Give him a moment to process all that. It's a lot.]

...So you're saying people just get kidnapped here all the time?

And that the animals here like fighting each other?

[Ryou shoots a glance at the Hisuian Zorua sitting next to him. It just looks back at him, with that sad look it seems to always have.]

[crystalmaster]

[Radley chuckles at that very accurate phrasing.]

Yeah, exactly. People also go back a lot. But how long they're here is always a mystery. Some are around for years, and others only a few weeks.

[He pets some of his Pokemon, who are watching the conversation get typed out.]

Some of them sure like it. Others are pretty much pacifists.

[Cosmo hates battling. But she'd do it in an instant to protect Radley.]

Years?

[That isn't exactly comforting. Ryou absently pats the weird little fox next to him as he thinks about what he just got dropped into.]

How long have you been here, if you don't mind me asking?

[It's not comforting at all, but Radley figured this person should know.]

I've been here since February.

Since February?

[It's spring back home, but as Ryou looks around he realizes it doesn't look or feel much like spring here. If anything, it looks more like fall.]

Is it fall here right now? It was still spring in my world.

[Is it thin air though? Or a huge Haunter that suddenly appears and cackles loudly, looming over poor Ryou and Banshee.

If the teen happens to be listening past that bone-chilling laugh, he'll hear some shouting in the distance. A moment or two later out steps the owner of the terrifying ghost.

...

Probably someone he doesn't recognize at all unless he was somewhat conscious during Battle City. Marik isn't sure nor cares about the specifics of how the Spirit of The Ring operates his host though.]

Usi! Usi, what are you-

[He stops and stares, purple eyes honing in and roving over Ryou's self as he inspects him. Hair, clothes, body language, face. Particularly the face. Marik squints and steps forward as Usi the Haunter turns to face his trainer and cheekily shrug.]

... Bakura?

[Ryou jumps at the cackle. Banshee jumps too, but also starts charging up a Bitter Malice attack.

Then Marik steps out and Ryou hurriedly calls off his Zorua before she can attack, realizing this isn't a wild Pokémon.]

...Marik? How long have you been here? [He certainly seems unfamiliar with Marik, considering he doesn't really know him that well.]

[Marik realizes.... he doesn't actually know the difference between the two appearance wise. Shoot. The tone is hard to place as well. Guess he'll just roll with it and see how things turn out.

He steps a bit closer, Usi looming over his shoulder with a big grin.]

At the Ruins? About an hour or so. I've been outside in the fields watching the Yamasks since this place is far too...

[Marik looks around and sneers.]

... touristy for my tastes. Disappointing, honestly.

[Like really disappointing. Alphabet pokémon and nothing about the actual civilization that used to live here. Ugh.]

What about you?

[Honestly, yeah, this place is a bit touristy. It's interesting enough for Ryou since he's still new here, but he can see how it might be disappointing for someone who's been here longer.]

I just got here. I wanted to look around since I haven't seen the ruins yet.

[Meanwhile, Banshee just sits there and watches Usi, apparently not trusting the Haunter after that scare.]

[Not to mention that he's keenly aware of the tourist trap that is his home.

... The Unown spelling out "FARTZ" didn't help either but he'll let Ryou discover that on his own.

Marik should probably be less of a Debbie Downer and let the teen have some fun. He... assumes this is Ryou. Now that he's studied his cadence a bit, it doesn't match the Spirit's. Either that or he's acting again.

Why is he so damn confusing?

Banshee is smart in not trusting the massive Haunter. If Chenzira is Marik's shoulder angel, Usi's his shoulder devil. He disappears into the darkness of the Ruins again until-]

Stop it, Usi.

[Aww... The ghost reappears in front of Marik and slumps over disappointed. The teen uses this opportunity to be lazy, leaning against him with his forearm.]

Have you tackled any of the puzzles yet?

[Banshee bristles as Usi vanishes, growling as she looks around for the Haunter, before huffing and continuing to stare as it reappears.]

Hey, settle down Banshee. [Ryou speaks to his Zorua before returning his focus to Marik. Banshee does not settle down.]

I haven't tried any of the puzzles yet, I wanted to look around first. Have you done them? [Ryou's quite curious about the puzzles and fully intended to get to them later.]

[Usi behaves... for the time being. He can't really do much with Marik using him as a makeshift shelf. Such is the life of a giant somewhat corporeal spikey ghost.]

Sorry about him. He's a bit of a trickster. He... mostly means well.

[Although he's not sure why the Haunter went off on his own. He never strays too far. Perhaps Ryou has a similar aura due to the Ring's influence? (Which he has no idea the teen has finally been rid of.) Whatever the case, he'll need to look into that later on.

Marik turns his attention to the wall that contains the current floor's puzzle.]

No. I had looked at it briefly but-[felt it was too gimmicky]-it didn't really hold my interest. I wouldn't say no to watching you try your hand at them though. I've heard this kind of stuff is right up your alley.

It's fine, it's nice to meet him. [Ryou adores anything creepy, and Haunter is no exception to that. Now that the initial surprise has worn off, Usi's prank was actually kind of funny.

As for the puzzle, Ryou looks at it, approaching but not trying just yet.]

I don't mind a good puzzle. I was putting them off to look around first, but I could try this one now.

[Atem has shown interest in the ruins, as well, curious to see how they may or may not be similar to his Ancient Egyptian homeland. He's been having a pretty good time wandering around, taking his time with the hieroglyphs and trying to get a full glimpse of Unown zipping around in his peripheral. They're fun, he'd like to catch one.]

[When he's moving from one area to another, passing by a couple of other Sigilyphs like his own, he hears barking in the near distance. He turns a corner and woah! A familiar face!]

[Ryou looks up from Banshee at the sound of approaching footsteps, and he's about to get her to settle down when Atem walks in.]

Atem? You're here too?

[Well that's someone he never expected to see again!

Banshee, meanwhile, has stopped growling and has turned to just stare at Atem with that sad look she perpetually has.]

[Atem smiles. He's glad to meet someone from his closer circle, and hearing Ryou use his name must mean they're approximately on the same page.]

Yes, for a while now. It's good to see you.

[He acknowledges Banshee with a slight nod. His Sigilyph isn't out and about right now, the circling was making reading and such a little difficult.]

This world is so weird, isn't it?

[Between the constant background music, the fact that people are constantly being brought here, and the Pokémon themselves, Ryou's still not quite adjusted to everything yet.]

[Well Atem can't go too many in person interactions without doing some kind of Cool Guy pose, so hand in pocket we go. He's achieved enough ease and comfort in Johto to chill like that.]

It's very odd, yes. There are many things here I've never seen the likes of before.

[Which y'know is saying something from someone who used to summon monsters and gods from stone tablets.]

Aren't there? Apparently there's a whole ghost type of Pokémon, like Banshee here. [He gestures at the little Zorua as he speaks, who pricks her ears at her name.

...And of course Ryou thinks ghost types are neat. Considering his general interest in weird and creepy things, this shouldn't be a surprise.]

[It's absolutely not a surprise Ryou is into the ghosties. Atem dueled against that deck, he knows what's up, even if it wasn't Ryou at the helm.]

I've been interested in the dark and psychic types myself, but I'm not opposed to others.

[Idk what his team will look like when he does make it to the ruins oops.]

Oh, some of those are neat too!

[He's into anything suitably creepy. While ghost types are an easy bet, there are plenty of other Pokémon of other types that are also quite creepy.]
