[ ACTION ]

Walter couldn't stop touching his neck and wrists. He was dead. He remembered, very clearly, freeing himself from his flesh years ago. But his neck was whole and unblemished, as if the skin had never been broken. A pulse fluttered in his wrists and, when he touched his chest, he could the beat of his heart. A breeze blew past him and he could feel it on his skin, not just feel how it pulled at his trench-coat and hair.

And there was the creature before him to consider too. The Cubone watched him quietly, letting him pick it up and turn it's limbs this way and that, with a firm but gentle touch.

Between inspecting his living body and his Cubone, he seems a little distracted.

[ VIDEO ]

[ The feed hisses and crackles and finally snaps to focus on a man in a long, blue trenchcoat, with long blonde hair and scruff on his face. He looks into the camera intently, calmly. ] I was in the middle of something. Something very important.

[ He turns his attention to a Cubone in his hands. ] ...is it true? That this...creature, longs for it's mother?

[But Heather sure as fuck doesn't know what Walter LOOKS like, so she has no idea what kind of a conversation she's about to walk into.]</sub>

How cruel. Perhaps we can find your mother. [ He looks up to Heather again. ] Does this world often give companions that...'fit' us so well?

Except when it does the opposite and gives you something so unfitting that it comes back around the other way and becomes fitting again just out of sheer irony.

I don't like dogs either. [ He seemed to draw into himself a little at the mention of dogs. Vicious animals. But he still sounded quite mild, despite the obvious discomfort. He looks at the Cubone in his hands again and speaks to it. ]

I will keep this one, but I wouldn't keep a dog. Is your Mother sleeping? Mine is.

I got over the dog thing eventually. But only because the one they gave me wound up being kind of impossible to hate.

<sub>[But at the question, she quirks a brow. It's an odd question to ask, but well, they are talking about Cubones...]

[ Walter hadn't expected Heather to respond. He raises his eyes back to the camera. ]

You did not like her. I suppose, not all do. My mother has been asleep since I was a child. [ But he was about to wake her up, then this happened. ]

[She tilts her head, though, a little curiously. 'Asleep' sounds an awful lot like a child's interpretation of 'dead', but this dude can't be younger than thirty.]</sub>

I was about to awaken her through the 21 Sacraments for the Descent of the Holy Mother. But then I awoke here, and I cannot complete it. [ He touches his neck subconsciously. Why was he alive? He hadn't yet awoken Mother, so this couldn't be a gift from her. ]

[ Walter's a bit bemused. Why are you looking at him like that? But he remains...pleasant. In that unweaving, staring sort of way. ]

Were you taught of it as well?

[Because while Henry hasn't ever quite told her the whole story, there is one little thing she has over him when it comes to an understanding of Walter's mission. The cult kid experience is something you just don't quite get unless you've lived it, and she had, even if it had just been for seven sad years before Alessa got locked away in a basement.]

[She could try to reason. But she knows that won't work. You don't undo decades of brainwashing in one conversation with a stranger.]

[And lord knows in this place, just finding him and putting him down like Old Yeller won't solve any problems.]</sub>

[ He smiles softly, unaware of her thought processes. She seemed quite young however; ten years had passed since had sacrificed himself for the ritual and in that time the Wish House had shut down. But perhaps she was from another part of the Order. ]

The world was about to be cleansed of sin...but I can be patient. I don't understand why I am here. [ Really, it's very jarring and confusing. Even as he looks down at his Cubone again, trying to understand. ] I did everything as the striptures described.

<sub>[Boy howdy does Jack know what a person who was Previously Dead and is sort of baffled over being Currently Alive looks like by now!]

[The tall fellow wanders right up beside Walter, bends down a little to get a look at his Pokemon, and adjusts his glasses.]</sub>

He turned and looked at Jack, hand on his neck. "I was dead. I was about to complete the ritual to awaken Mother, but I awoke here. With this." He indicated to the Cubone.

"I don't understand. I shouldn't be here." Had he done something wrong? No, he couldn't have. He had been awaiting the Reciever of Wisdom. But he couldn't feel Vatiel's presence within him.

"Ah, yes! I had a feeling!"

Jack flashed Walter a bright grin, albeit missing a few teeth. He was proud of himself for being right and said pride slightly overrode the concern he should be having for this man who has just stepped out of a steel and flesh hellworld.

"I understand completely, but you shouldn't worry. All is well back home, I promise."

He took in the man, unaware that Jack himself had also been ex-living. To his eyes, he just seemed like another human. "All is well?" Did that mean that everything was still prepared? The Sacraments were still in place, all he needed was to seperate the Mother Reborn and the Receiver of Wisdom from their own flesh cages, much like he had done to himself, and Mother would awaken with Paradise.

"Why am I here?" He asked the stranger. "Why am I alive?"

"That...is a mystery. I for one thing we've all been brought to this place to do good. Leave it in better shape than we found it in!"

Jack, no.

"But you shouldn't worry. Being alive can be scary at first, but what fun is anything if it isn't at least a little scary?"

Do good. Had Mother brought him here? Did she see he was about to purify one world and brought him here to cleanse this place of sin as well? The thought made him smile. Mother was proud of him.

"I'm not afraid - I was alive once. I just didn't understand." But without Vatiel's guidance, he couldn't complete the 21 Sacraments. And there were the holy relics he had needed for his own Ascension which he couldn't be certain of acquiring here. There had to be another way. He would please Mother and usher her into this world too.

"You said living was scary. Had you not been alive for a long time?"

Jack straightened back up, still wearing his jack-o-lantern smile.

"I've been dead longer than I've been alive, but I've had a few years to get back into practice! Some people need to be reminded about breathing and keeping dust out of their eyes and how much bruises hurt. I'm sure you'll do just fine!"

The ex-skeleton loved to hear himself talk but now his attention had shifted to the little Pokemon in Walter's care.

"And who is this?"

Walter looked at the Cubone and raised it up towards Jack, so he could get a better look. It was currently holding it's skull in place, after Walter had poked and prodded it. "I've been told it longs for it's mother."

An extremely fitting companion really. Walter did wonder if this was some arrangement made for him when he came, but who would know to give him this exact creature?

"That is what the Poke'dex says..." Jack leaned down to get a better look. The poor thing seemed shy. "I wonder if those who breed Cubone have trouble separating them from their mothers if they have already hatched."

He would have to ask around.

"It's very young regardless. You'll have to stand in."

Walter stiffens. "Why? Why would they take them from their mothers?" He holds the Cubone tightly, like a doll. At the mention of being a stand-in, he looks down at the little creature. Him, be a mother himself? It seemed like an oxymoron. Or some kind of weird joke being played on him. He didn't want to have a creature to mother. He wanted his mother.
