Armin reminds Newt a lot of himself. He's inquisitive and has such a passion for learning plus he genuinely cares about the animals in his care! Newt has a lot of respect for how much Armin is trying to learn and do.

It's also rare for him to find someone that understands his own passion for this sort of thing, who expects it so readily and Newt treasures Armin's friendship because of it. He's not good with putting stuff like that into words, it takes awhile like it did with Jacob back home, but it's definitely obvious in the way that Newt interacts with Armin and readily reaches out to him to share things with him.

Newt wants nothing more than to teach Armin everything he knows and share every single thing he discovers with him because Armin is the type of friend that Newt has always been longing for. (And hasn't had since he was at Hogwarts.) He'd go to bat for Armin in a heartbeat and trusts him more than anyone else he's met thus far.
